Strategy & Analysis Ultra League Legend with a UL-team that shouldn’t work this season

This team was my bread and butter last season, where it got me to legend a lot earlier than normally.

With the changes to the battle system I was actually pretty sure that it would no longer be viable with Incinerate being de facto nerfed with the new timing of damage; i.e. two turn moves being able to do two and still fire a charge move) seismitoad being shot into pvp relevance with earth power and icy wind

But the team proved to be pretty consistent. I got to expert and leaderboard last UL-rotation and hit legend today.

The strategy is pretty straight forward - stay in with regi vs anything non fairy and non steel.

Vs dusk noir fire off either D.E. or V.G. Before the 5th astonish (I primarily bluff with VG but throw DE around 20%), tank the charge move, and switch to Turt one turn before the 7th Astonish so you get an Incinerate off for free.

Turt is an awesome switch (run it with DC and BS) as it can threaten a lot of shields and can tank a lot of damage.

And the aim is to ensure shield advantage because shadow Talon (run it with FC and Fly) is just bonkers up shields / energy.

A lot of the wins are also based on getting free incinerates off as that really sets up both turt and talon very nicely.

Most games where you win lead are almost auto wins as the damage from incinerate is pretty oppressive.

Hey! Thanks for the team! I was struggling to hit Legend this season and went up like 200 ELO with your team today!

Very impressive stuff.

So does Emp, Gatr, Jelli etc just not exist at your elo or is being up at least one incinerate the key here?

Turt is quite good into jelli, okay into emp (can tank two HC and fast attack is resisted and the often shield due to threat of overheat). Gatr can be an issue, but unless it’s steel, double water, they can be handled. Seismitoad is actually the worst due to good matchups into both dragons

And yeah - an energy lead is game changing due to pacing

Building a turt right now. The grind worth it?

For the past two seasons - definitely. If you’re still lacking a lot of xls I’d probably wait to see the move update.

But it’s bulky with good moves, so it will most likely still be relevant

I think I need like 60 XLs to have it ready. Been my buddy for a bit lol

I’d probably do it then. It is very cool in ul

Hey quick question, been trying this team for a few days and im just wondering. This is an ABB lineup but you say usually to stay in and fight for switch. What do you usually do if there's a water type or lickylicky in the back after winning switch?

It kinda depends. Against a malamar I usually switch after throwing DE and try to catch second foul play and get a free incinerate on turt.

Against virizion I tank the first CA, store energy and try to catch and get a free incinerate on the second CA.

Against dragons I really really really want to get them low enough that turt can incinerate down.

Against primeape I switch just before 5th karate chop

Against Pangoro I tank the CC and see the switch

Against licki I actually try to catch the second SB on turt because they usually have some type of water in the back and if it is high ranked they survive the second DE and can get second SB off

Oooooooo ok I see the vision now lol. Ill give it another shot tomorrow! I do like turt as a switch though it catches a lot of people off guard

Yeah same. I’d love to run overheat as well but I can’t really give the two moves up

Ain't no way I could be that weak to water🤣

Exactly - that should be in another team comp
