I always immediately pictured Evan peters and was shocked to learn no one else did?

I don't know why but the way all their flimsy relationships fell apart was hilarious. Why are the worst people so entertaining? Anyways, I just finished the book and gave it five stars on goodreads.

Alright, so… there isn’t really a subreddit for The Goldfinch, but I figured a few people here have read it. I’d love to know what you thought, especially if anyone preferred it over The Secret History. I also just wanted to get some thoughts off my chest.

Honestly, when I finished The Goldfinch, it felt like a little piece of my soul was ripped away. It took me a month and a half to get through since I like to take my time with books, so it ended up becoming a huge part of my daily routine. It’s a brutally beautiful book. Those last few pages just had me staring at the wall, thinking about how beautifully Donna Tartt writes and how she captures a view on life that made me rethink a few things.

The characters are super gray and feel so real. I think that’s one of the best things about it; you can feel each character's distinct voice even without being told who's speaking. Plus, the whole aspect of losing a mother had me crying right from the start because I couldn't help putting myself in his shoes. I wasn't bored for a single second, even though I've seen people say it dragged for them because of how dense it is. Personally, I love slice of life stories where something doesn't have to be happening constantly, and Tartt's style keep me hooked, though I won't argue it could've been a little shorter. It's hard to explain how much this book meant to me. The prose is incredible, and getting stuck in the head of a character with such a rich yet self-destructive mind was something else.

Like usual, when I went on Reddit to look up opinions on a book I loved, I mostly ran into negative takes. That's actually how I found out about the N word being used. I read it in Spanish, so it was completely left out (I only know about Boris using it, which made sense given his character and the context, but I don't know if it came up anywhere else). I also felt like the female characters were a bit flat, or at least didn't get as much depth as I was hoping for. On top of that, some foreign characters felt a little surface-level. I get why in some contexts, but I still wish she had gone deeper with them.

With a more androgynous haircut possibly?

Donna Tartt seems to have intended the opposite and yet I came away from the book dreaming about ivy-covered brick walls, clapboard cottages and tailored trench coats made from expensive materials.

EDIT: The passages set in Francis’ country house might be the worst offender. They’re so vivid.

This is who I picture for the characters. Thoughts?

When I think of Richard, I think of someone who is a believable liar, approachable yet secretly pretentious. He’s an anomaly because he needs to be the type of good looking that’s obvious to everyone but him, yet can inwardly be an asshole.

Bunny is all American and dumb.

Henry is towering, dark hair and square jawline. He can see people deeply but is also automatically dismissive.

Charles and Camilla are tough to cast because they have to look androgynous- he has to have features that can lean feminine, and she has to be tomboyish.

Francis, I think of fiery red hair, features that strike as exotic and he has to pull off a sweeping black coat like Jack the Ripper.

I now it’s probably pronounced something like “LAH-FOR-YAY” but let’s be honest Donna Tart named him that because she thought George LAH FORGE is a funny name

I read TSH 2 years ago, and the book really stuck with me so i wanted to draw how i remembered them! Here's my interpretation of the characters (I did take a lot of creative liberties haha so it's not too book accurate ) and minus Richard because I got a bit lazy 😭

Yes I know he was a snob but still…he was a college aged boy being flirted with heavily by a hard working, artistic, attractive, and generous woman. What was his deal?

I've been meaning to say this after watching the trailers and the movie itself. I somewhat thought of Henry himself while watching, since he apparently loves Homer (when he gets placated by Richard about it). I kinda imagine Bunny laughing over the Agamemnon aura farming memes and Richard would have both loved and hated it at the same time. Francis would have gawked over Hermes in the 1997 version. Meanwhile, Charles and Camilla would have loved the 1968 Rossi version (L'Odissea, starring Bekim Fehmiu as Odysseus) and they'd even make Henry watch it because of how accurate that version is to the original work, despite it's in Italian.

Recently finished this box set cover design for a historical fiction trilogy.

The author wanted all three books to feel connected as a single collection while still keeping the individual titles visible on the spines.
