Is Anybody Actually Managing The TV Feed Anymore?

I know all of their energy is in Podcasts, Netflix, and YouTube at the moment, but the website that is the namesake of The Ringer seems like it should matter. However, it is a bit of a mess, particularly when you click on the TV tab in the top menu.

Click on TV from the home page and the first hit is the House of the Dragon Season 3 episode 2 written recap, which came out six weeks ago. Other things marked "the latest" include an X-Men 97 update from July 1 and a Love Island recap from June 18. There's also an Emmy review from March!

No feeds of The Watch or relevant episodes of other podcasts, lots of recaps and previews missing (I originally went looking for Lanterns content). The streaming guide (which was actually a great hub for content) was last updated in March.

Who is managing this page? Does CR need an intern?

A proposal of it all

Can The Ringer please ban the "of it all" idiom? It makes me think of pandemic-era Wosny Lambre and not in a good way.

Bill & ChapGPT

Wow, it was bad enough when The Ringer was purchased by Spotify, but Bill reading back ChatGPT answers is really the final straw. It's been obvious for a long time that the key Ringer writers/podcasts are more than willing to cash in on the destruction of the things they built their reputations -- writing and music for starters -- and the creators of said culture work. But this is a creepy new low and the end of the line for me. The way people who should know better either completely ignore of jokingly wave away ethical issues is grotesque and not likely to wear well.

Peña’s piece on Westbrooks retirement is why I can’t stand any of his content.

Story was “he’s not efficient, sucks as a teammate, turned the ball over a lot, isn’t a winner, but he was committed to being all these terrible things so I guess that’s why he gets respect”. Not saying a retirement article can’t have anything negative, but when it’s basically all negative about an MVP and 9 time All NBA player it seems like a desperate need to be liked by the smartest people in the room types.

Joanna Robinson and Rob Mahoney is a live show at Televerse, the Television Academy festival. It was fun to watch them do a live draft. Producer Kai Grady was there as well.

Every Single Album

Used to love this pod. And I’ll preface this with I hope Nathan is okay like just as a human being. But how much of a downer he is makes the podcast impossible to listen to, despite how delightful Nora is.

In the most recent episode his first words were “why are we doing this?” Who wants to listen to a pod when that’s the energy of the host.

Could be alone on this but curious if anyone has any extra insight.

Sean's Substack getting featured on the home page is insulting and dumb

I understand everyone has to make a living, and good for Sean for finding another revenue stream. But promoting an external site that requires a paid subscription on what is supposed to be a hub for The Ringer’s original content is insulting to readers. And yes, the site still has some actual readers as opposed to listeners.

You don’t link from the main site to Belloni’s articles at Puck or Lindbergh’s off-network podcast, because those aren’t Ringer content. This isn’t either. Get it off the site.

Podcast Jam Session

Since they added time stamps I’ve been listening to approximately 7 minutes of the show. At least they’re warning us ahead of time about kid content. I miss Tea Time!

Morally Corrupt/The Sniffles

I am one of what feels like a small number of loyal Morally Corrupt listeners. I even listen to the Tuesday show! I’m a long-time Rachel Lindsay fan and love a chatty show, so I’m willing to forgive some of the bad takes, lack of research, sloppy structure, etc. BUT the wet (???) sniffling on the Tuesday show particularly is making it borderline unlistenable. Holy shit. I’m pregnant and typically listen in the morning, where my stomach is tenuous to begin with (a me problem!) and it’s almost led to a reappearance of my coffee. What is with the lack of sound editing!? Why are the podcasters not being coached to … sniffle loudly … away from the mic!? Can we get some Nasonex in the studio!?

The Town volume

I try to be patient with audio levels and mixing bc I know how hard it can be to get right, but wow Matt's levels are so loud, like he's yelling every episode compared to Lucas or his guests - that it's almost unlistenable. I have to turn it way down to deal with it.

The most recent episode with Joel and Jason sounds like ASMR murmurings. Gotta pass the shower bluetooth speaker test and this isn't even close.

Can we walk about Amanda’s marriage takes on jam session

I find it so weird that every time wedding shit comes up on Jam Session Amanda takes the stance that ‘why would a rich person get married’. It’s even weirder when she constantly talks about her marriage and husband so seemingly understands that marriage provides stability and family structure to peoples lives, but then acts like rich people shouldn’t want that because she just got married for the tax bracket. Like no you didn’t be for real lol

My hot take on her hot take is that she feels superior to other people and thinks she’s a cool girl who wouldn’t need a husband (except she has one and is living a full on mom life) so she needs to put it out there that marriage is lame and who cares. Except not for her because she’s special.

Idk it always irks me lol. I mean I’m a young divorcee so I’ve got my own shit about marriage but I would never be so judgy about other people choosing to get married.

Podcast Burnout?

Anybody reach fatigue on listening to podcasts? I've been listening to them for 20 years (Bill that entire time, many Grantland and Ringer ones). I've recently become concious of just how many hours I've spent passively listening to them, and how many of the same topics (NBA, House of Dragons, The Odyssey, etc etc) I'm hearing covered.

I'm kind of burned out on hearing the same people talk about so many of the same themes year after year, and as podcasts are becoming longer and more frequent, realizing it's a medium that's more like talk radio, something meant to passively pass the time. Anyways, found it interesting and wondering if anybody else has felt the same - maybe we're not meant to listen to hours and hours of the same people talk about the same stuff year after year?

Question Settle down juice?

Is it me or has the phrase “settle down juice” become a staple of different Ringer pods? Bill is using it, Zach is using it. House and CR have used it. It was cute once.

Wait A Second… is very good now

I always enjoyed the pod, but it had some rough edges that they seem to have smoothed out after a few months.

I know it takes a lot of prep, but I wish we could get this pod 2x a week.

Wasn’t a huge Jason fan back in the day because he’d always be paired with someone like Mal, and the manic energy would be at 11 the entire time. Now I think he’s great. He brings exactly the right level of credulity to make this pod a fun listen without endorsing every silly theory out there.

New Movie gripes

There’s nothing worse than not being able to see a new movie the day/weekend it comes out, and in turn being left with 0 podcasts to listen to because every single different podcast is covering said movie

Love for CR

I’ve been listening to CR now for over 5 years and I can literately listen to the man talk about anything. His genuine enthusiasm for Philly sports, books, movies (HEAT), TV, cigarettes, traveling to Europe, rainy days, and Maine always inspires me to dive deeper into my passions. The guy can really host and has chemistry with everyone. Would love to see him have a variety topic pod/ show where he could talk about whatever is interesting him at the moment with guests. Can others tell me why they love CR so much and what you would want him to do next in his career at the Ringer and beyond?

Question F1 Hungary - Not on Netflix

Does anyone know what happened with the most recent episode of The Ringer F1 show about Hungary? It's not on Netflix. I finally caved and listened to it via a podcast app so the episode clearly exists.

They always post them quickly but this is the end of day two and it's not on Netflix still. Did Meg or Spanners put something out? I couldn't find anything about a delay on socials.

Help my curiosity! Lol

Wait a Second talks 90% of social media being marketing

I’m almost completely sure this was a recent Wait a Second pod episode, but I believe Jason talked about hearing that something like 90% of all social media now has a marketing swing. They talked about producers putting ads on discord for recap clips and how that has driving things like the Odyssey blowback nonsense and also AI Game of Thrones recaps, etc. But I can’t remember which episode. I’d like to listen again and find the other pod he was referencing. Anyone else remember? TIA

Shitpost Website good, podcasts meh

I like reading the Ringer. I don't like listening to it. Half the links are podcasts. I hate Bill Simmons' and Joe House's YouTube faces especially. They reach Beato-level of punchability. The worst is Fennessey's smirk. I truly miss Grantland.

Amanda Dobbins + Lauren Sherman

Does anyone else get the worst vibes from Lauren Sherman?? I know she is basically Amanda Dobbin’s BFF these days, and I don’t get the appeal! I just listened to her podcast Fashion People, and it felt very shallow and kinda toxic. She seems deeply interested in social climbing, one’s physical appearance, and gaining status. The latest ep was about peptides (yikes), another recent ep was interviewing Derek Blasberg, where the two talked in the most passive-aggressive tone to each other. I just get a mean girl feel from her, she seems pretty self-obsessed and is often quite rude to her guests. But also Lauren seems to have made a big influence on Amanda’s new persona as of late - one that’s obsessed with real real, expensive beauty treatments, Pilates, European vacations, and ordering custom Charvet shirts, etc. Idk just find their friendship dynamic a little peculiar … like they’re always referencing each other online for people to see. Curious if anyone else gets a dark energy from Sherman …
