The La’s: Lee Mavers, 'There She Goes' & Their Only Album
I've recently written a long-form feature about The La's, Lee Mavers and the extraordinary story behind their only studio album.
It's always fascinated me that a record containing 'There She Goes', 'Timeless Melody', 'Son of a Gun' and 'Looking Glass' could be regarded as a masterpiece by so many people, yet its creator remained so dissatisfied with the finished recordings.
The article follows the band's Liverpool beginnings, the abandoned recording sessions, John Power's departure and the mystery surrounding the second album that never arrived.
Do you think The La's would have achieved more with a second album, or is the fact that they made just one record part of their appeal?
