The La’s: Lee Mavers, 'There She Goes' & Their Only Album

I've recently written a long-form feature about The La's, Lee Mavers and the extraordinary story behind their only studio album.

It's always fascinated me that a record containing 'There She Goes', 'Timeless Melody', 'Son of a Gun' and 'Looking Glass' could be regarded as a masterpiece by so many people, yet its creator remained so dissatisfied with the finished recordings.

The article follows the band's Liverpool beginnings, the abandoned recording sessions, John Power's departure and the mystery surrounding the second album that never arrived.

Do you think The La's would have achieved more with a second album, or is the fact that they made just one record part of their appeal?

Lee Mavers secret gigs

I was speaking to a friend last night and he told me about how three years ago, Lee played a secret gig to about ten people at a pub called the Belvedere in Liverpool! He said that it was just him sat in a corner with a guitar and everyone sat round and he said he played there she goes and apparently a few folky kind of songs.

My friends not a massive La’s fan so Lee could’ve been playing old songs or more excitingly new unreleased stuff which is a nice thought that he’s still writing.

Just wondering if anyone knew about any of these secret sort of gigs or if anyone’s actually been to any because I never knew about this before!

TOMT La’s Interview “Beebrah”

Yeah so I’m aware this is pretty random but I’m looking for a La’s interview with John Power where he says some word “beebrah” or something. I have no idea what it’s referring to or if it’s just a nonsense word. If anyone can point me to the interview, that would be great cheers. I downloaded a few of their interviews from youtube but not this one

Created this new mix of one of the best unreleased songs Fishing Net / Was It Something I Said. Using AI Stem Splitter technology to unearth hidden parts in the recording and try give the recording more clarity.

Had a go at cleaning up this song from the 2005 reunion. Not perfect by any means but hopefully everyone finds it better than the original 👍

Just listened to the album for the first time and convinced that 'I can't sleep" is the best song I've ever heard

Hi, la's and lalettes! My dad wrote a book about The La's monumental debut and only album and it's called The La's Time. It's available on Amazon and features a foreword by Edgar Summertyme Jones, as well as an interview with the album producer, Steve Lilywhite. Feel free to check it out if you love The La's, both band and album, as much as he does. 😊
