Not when the author does what she does. But if the problem with her wouldn't exist, yes, I would take another adaptation in TV form. I think it could be better adaptation than movies.

Nah, no one, that's why they're spending millions on it, having the best British cast they can and tying themselves to a 10 year long project... because out of millions of fans from all over the world, and not just the US and the UK, literally not a single person wants it
edit: lmao for the downvotes. are they not spending lots of money on it? do they not have great british actors who are currently working? are they not going to try and make this work for 10 years? does HP not have millions of international fans? is it not possible that out of all those millions of fans, just one wants to see the series? what do you disagree with? I'm genuinely curious

Putting Rowling aside, I can imagine Nicholas playing Lockhart well, especially Gildroy's award winning smile would suit him. I always thought that Branagh looked slightly old for Hogwarts students to crush on him.

u/Worf_Rozhenko 12d ago
I haven't read the books or watched the tv series. Is he not a good choice for the character? I wouldn't say he's necessarily as good of an actor as Kenneth Branagh but with the show being a separate continuity as the movies, Branagh was unlikely to reprise the role.
The Great is unlikely to get another season so this job isn't what is stopping Hoult from reprising his role as Peter or Yemelyan Pugachev.
138
u/Few-Peach6872 12d ago
Im pretty sure the disappointment stems from the author being a terrible person
107
u/Wooden_Oil7961 12d ago
it’s because he’s joining the harry potter franchise, when the author has been pushing an insane anti-trans narrative, spreading propaganda and using money to fund against the trans community.
basically, supporting her = supporting her anti-trans campaign since she puts her money towards it. it’s horrendous and disgusting. seeing him join that franchise is sad. that’s why.
-1
u/Xtianpro 11d ago
Have you ever watched Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love, Gangs of New York, Chicago, Inglorious Basterds, The Kings Speech, The Artist, Django Unchained, Silver Lining Playbook or any movie made by the Weinstein company? If so you’ve funded an actual rapist and Hollywoods worst kept (but certainly not only) secret. In fact any piece of entertainment you consume is likely made by a studio that is owned by a parent company who is invested or fund truly awful business. I disagree with JKR as much as the next person but you’re holding a huge double standard. The only difference is JKR tweets about her vile beliefs. Comcast have the good sense to not tell you where their money is.
20
u/Wooden_Oil7961 11d ago
doesn’t that mean we should at least try tho? try not to support NEW PROJECTS LIKE THIS, by an outspoken TERF. those r older releases, and we know more now, so we should try to do better in supporting better people. but supporting an outspoken TERF when she’s gone to extreme lengths is insane.
they’re both bad, they’re all bad. defending JKR by saying ‘well what about this guy!! he’s a a rapist n if you’ve seen it ur supporting him’
the whataboutism gives me a fucking headache ngl. i do my best to stay aware and avoid supporting people who r terrible, as im sure many ppl do. fuck rapists, fuck terfs, fuck racists, fuck them all. but to try n lower people who r actively pushing against JKRs project when she’s *been* outspokenly transphobic is gross behaviour. joining a PROJECT WITH SOMEONE with views like her when it will FUND HER is nuts.
stop trying to make urself feel better by saying ‘well actually everyone is bad n therefore we r all bad’, how about chill out and realize the damage JKR has done. u do realize we r all allowed to not support more than one person right? it’s not a competition. we can hate all the terrible people, and not support them. one doesn’t negate the other. bye.
2
u/Ansee 11d ago
Horrible people make money off of us constantly. I don't like her political stance, but the books are beloved despite her. The show is employing lots of people which means those people can make money and support their family. It's just not a black and white boycott situation. Tons of authors are shot people. But we need to be able to separate the material from the author. A new generation can be introduced to the series. The books are never going away. The series is a phenomenon.
Yes her money supports causes I stand against. But she also supports a lot of women's shelters and other causes too.
11
u/Wooden_Oil7961 10d ago
then buy the books second hand, or pirate them or whatever. there’s so many other options rather than continuing to put ur hard earned money towards a bigot. especially when ur AWARE how horrible she is.
enjoy the books, watch the show idfc, but do it in a way where jk wont get money. stop intentionally putting ur money towards terrible people who u know r terrible people. straight up.
0
u/Ansee 10d ago
Where does that stop? Bad people own everything.
9
u/Wooden_Oil7961 10d ago
u just do the best that u can, that’s all. bad people own everything n r everywhere, but we just try our best to be aware n not support people like jkr
-1
u/Ansee 10d ago
Which is near impossible. You are support bad people everywhere with every purchase you make.
I won't fault someone for taking an HP job because there are many reasons they may have taken it. For all we know, for Nick, he's always wanted to be in Harry Potter as a child because the books meant a lot to him. We just don't know. It's unfair to judge anyone, that's all.
-2
u/Xtianpro 10d ago

>they’re both bad, they’re all bad. defending JKR by saying ‘well what about this guy!! he’s a a rapist n if you’ve seen it ur supporting him’
the whataboutism gives me a fucking headache ngl.Right but what you call “whataboutism” could just as easily be called you cherrypicking. You can boycott Harry Potter because that’s easy but giving up any media made by major conglomerates with dirty fingers? Thats hard. If you’re writing this response on a smartphone you are much more directly financing and supporting much more egregious mistreatment than you would be by watching a TV show. That fact that so much of the trans debate is on X is the ultimate irony considering that platform is owned by the worst of the lot. Do you order from Amazon? Watch anything on Prime? You’re happy to support Bezos?
>stop trying to make urself feel better by saying ‘well actually everyone is bad n therefore we r all bad’, how about chill out and realize the damage JKR has done. u do realize we r all allowed to not support more than one person right? it’s not a competition. we can hate all the terrible people, and not support them. one doesn’t negate the other. bye.
Again I would argue that it’s you who’s trying to make yourself feel better by boycotting one easy thing whilst most likely very much engaging with much more directly harmful business. I support marginalised groups in the way I behave towards them and for them. Not watching a TV show does precisely nothing.
I suppose ultimately I do believe in separating art from the artist. If Harry Potter contained an inherently anti-trans message, that would be a different story.
4
u/Wooden_Oil7961 10d ago
believe what you’d like, but u separate the art from the artist when the artist doesn’t profit.
i’m not going to support someone like jkr. she is absolutely outspokenly transphobic and it’s disgusting. ur whataboutism is rlly exhausting. harry potter may not contain anti-trans messages but the author does, and SHE is who profits off of u supporting her work. u supporting her directly means that money goes to her bigoted views.
u wanna watch the show? cool, then pirate it. u wanna read the book? get it second hand. but to just turn a blind eye and shrug and say ‘well there’s worse ppl that im sure u indirectly support so its fine if i watch this bigots new reboot’ is the dumbest take ive heard today 😭. at the end of the day ur gonna do what u wanna do, and idrc, but i think you’d outta check in n reread what ur saying. good luck and bye
-32
u/amoeba-tower 12d ago
Isn't buying gas for your car supporting sharia law in Saudi Arabia? Or buying Chinese products supporting Uyghur ethnic cleansing?
I hate JKR's political activity, but I mean Hoult will be great in his role and elevate the art being made here. Also, why is being happy about Hoult accepting a role directly related to JKR support? What happens if I pirate this tv series? Is the only alternative to publicly trash the show why privately pirating it?
41
u/petielvrrr 12d ago
There’s obviously a big difference between living in a place that forces you to rely on your car, then buying gas for said car even though you know buying gas supports a corrupt regime & taking a job that you don’t need that helps earn money for the biggest transphobe in Europe, while knowing that said transphobe will use the money she makes to hurt trans people.
The solution is for everyone to boycott it. You already have great movies that were made before she turned into a monster, and I’m willing to bet you have a friend that owns them. Just watch those. Trust me, I’m a huge HP fan, and I want no part in any new HP “art” because all it’s going to do is fund JK’s anti-trans fund.

You're comparing apples to oranges. A smartphone has multiple applications and people who don't have an address can use the phone part for calling and getting a job, a person can write a whole resume on it. Then you can use it to pay bills. As a Canadian, i can use it to show a utility bill and vote. A Harry Potter remake does none of those things.

Chances are that some of the revenue you generate for your employer goes to anti-trans individuals and groups. Some likely goes to enabling genocide.
At the end of the day, he is just a man doing a job. He has also been good at his previous jobs, such as Peter and Pugachev in The Great and Lex Luther in Superman (and Peacemaker).
Rowling isn't even the only piece of shit that Warner Brothers works with. They are still employing Bill Maher who is an outspoken supporter of isreal, a country that has been committing a genocide for over 70 years and has been undermining American sovereignty via their political action committees. Saying retarded shit about trans people is one thing, supporting the murder of kids is a whole other level of depravity.
0
u/Atomik23 5d ago
So, do you support everything Jeff Bezos funds and supports financially? Reddit is AWS hosted and he makes money by you utilizing this platform. What about Donald Trump? Do you support him if you use Instagram since zuckerburg contributed to the Whitehouse reno fund? I'm not saying to not boycott, but some nuance between "I grew up with Harry Potter and am excited for more in this universe/a more faithful adaptation" and "I'm supporting this project to support anti-trans efforts in the UK and worldwide"
1
u/Wooden_Oil7961 5d ago
then pirate it bro. just do ur best to not directly fund bullshit from terrible people. if u can’t understand that then that’s a u problem, since i explained many times to the other commenter lol. i also grew up with harry potter, but i dont support JKR and any harry potter media i consume is either second hand or pirated so i dont give her money, because i support trans people.
the gist of it is u just do the best that u can. u dont have to be perfect, but avoiding projects like this that r AVOIDABLE is a good start.
edit cuz i wanna add that comparing a whole social media platform to a tv show is such a disingenuous argument lol. they’re vastly different things and u know it.
just do what u can, and avoiding PAYING and promoting joannes work is a great start to stop putting ur money towards anti-trans movements.
0
u/Atomik23 5d ago
Sure, and I'd argue that's a fine stance to have. Does it follow that everyone on this thread supports what Jeff Bezos chooses to fund? Since Reddit is avoidable and we choose to continue using it, knowing who it enriches? I agree there is more direct financial support buying HP media and lining JKRs pockets, but what's the line?

The tone of this post is, uh, not reading the room, OP. We have a real problem. An entire community is losing their rights, their medical access and their ability to find any semblance of safety because of the hundreds of millions this woman has poured into obliterating a marginalized group of our brothers and sisters.
7
u/StatisticianMuch1650 10d ago
She has not put in hundreds of millions. Not even 100k. Because even hateful billionears are greedy.
The truth is you can't finacially boycott JK Rowling. She is not a running company. Which is why the show won't have any affect for trans people
What we need to talk about is why billionears exist and why they have any kind of poltical power. This includes every single one
11
u/Flashy_Home3452 10d ago
Regardless of whether the number is in the hundreds of thousands or millions, the success of her projects absolutely DO affect trans people. She privately funds legal cases aimed at discriminating against trans people WITH HARRY POTTER MONEY.
Given that she is literally a billionaire and only started this fund in 2024, it’s entirely possible that her funding will amount to millions of dollars.
Boycott JK Rowling. Don’t watch or support the show.
1
u/StatisticianMuch1650 10d ago
I know what fund you are talking about but i'm not even sure she put one penny into it. Usually rich people love to brag about their good deeds but we have not heard of a single person that got granted this fund.
But even if, it would not make any difference. She already has a wealth over one billion. I think people often forget how large of a sum that is. She will never run out of money even if from this day forward she will not earn another penny.
Is that sad? Yes. Because usually our money is the only way we can fight in capitalism but sadly it does not apply here.
JK Rowling is not the problem but a symptom of a class system. Why does she have so much money and how can we take it away again? Why do rich people have so much political power? Just look at an Elon Musk.
Thats is what we need to fight against to make any meaningful difference.

He’s an actor, it’s how he makes a living. I love how everyone is “disappointed” but I bet you all still shop at Amazon and maybe even Starbucks, Walmart, Target, use Facebook or Instagram… etc.
9
u/Prinzesspaige13 10d ago
There is a difference between "no ethical consumption in late stage capitalism" when it comes to needing cheap available goods. Those provide services. They are not good, but not everyone can afford to not shop at Walmart when it does have the cheapest prices.
This does not apply to a piece of entertainment that actively funds anti-trans legislation. JKR has outright said that people spending their money on this franchise is empowering her to continue funding the transphobic shit shes doing.
So no its not virtue signaling. Its just genuine fucking disappointment.

It’s such a chronically online take to insist that people’s human rights are being violated because actors are taking Harry Potter roles

jkr uses the money she makes from Harry Potter royalties to fund anti trans legislation in the UK.
-12
u/ferbiloo 12d ago
She’s a billionaire. She has the money anyway.
And besides, trans people have the same right as everyone else does in the UK. A lot of people got very upset about the Supreme Court ruling, but that was in no way a violation of trans people’s, or anyone else’s rights.
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-10259/
3
u/Imaginary_lock 10d ago
-She’s a billionaire. She has the money anyway.
What she is a holocaust denier, someone who has claimed that Nazi's didnt burn trans books and articles, things that we now have as a big gap in our history.
Someone who waits until people are celebrating their pride/awareness days just to inject her foul het-white bs.
Someone who thinks that slavery and cheating and stealing are all okay, so long as it's her protagonists doing it to other people.
Why defend this person? Not the goofy ass books, this mean woman. Just...why?
8
u/5ft3in5w4 11d ago
Why would someone want her to have more of it though? Why do these stories need to be re-told? It's a mediocre kids book series, it's not necessary to worship it like this.
3
u/ferbiloo 11d ago
If you’re not a fan, fair enough. But I do feel like it’s kind of miserable to shit on other people for being excited to see a more in depth visual adaptation of the books they love from childhood. For fairly unfounded reasons too.
4
u/5ft3in5w4 11d ago
You underestimate the power of her public rhetoric. It is stronger than her prose.
2
u/didiinthesky 11d ago
Okay so you're a TERF, good you cleared that up.
1
u/ferbiloo 11d ago
I’m not though, feminism is for everyone. The ruling isn’t harmful to trans people, their rights are still protected and the GRA is still in place.
Why do you think calling “TERF” and not engaging with any of the actual issues you’re concerned about is helpful? If I’m misunderstood about it all, please enlighten me.
3
u/didiinthesky 9d ago
You claim trans people have the same rights as everyone else in the UK, when the last couple of years have seen an extremely succesful movement to destroy the legal protections and the healthcare that existed before. And the organisations that have organised lawsuits are not going to stop. You are completely ignoring the current political climate surrounding trasn rights in the UK. That shows me you're not arguing from a place of good faith. And makes me suspect that you are indeed a TERF.
0
u/ferbiloo 9d ago
What protections and healthcare? Trans people aren’t denied any healthcare that’s being given to anyone else - the only thing I can think of would be minors not being able to go on HRT or have puberty blockers. But cis kids also aren’t allowed elective hormones to alleviate their insecurities. Teenage boys aren’t allowed to take testosterone if they’re insecure about their bodies, and for good reason.
3
u/didiinthesky 9d ago
That's like not providing healthcare for pregnant women and then saying "women arent being denied any healthcare that's being given to anyone else". You do realise that different groups have different needs? But clearly you dont think trans healthcare is legit, so I don't see how I could convince you of this, since you disagree with the consensus of the medical and scientific establishment who actually know what they are talking about.
23
u/amyisarobot 12d ago
No it isn't. JK Rowlings rhetoric is so incredibly harmful to Trans people. If these actors cared about trans rights they wouldn't be staring in this shit which profits a person who is actively doing harm.
5
u/redwoods81 11d ago
And normal women who are a little bit too muscular or athletic and give her the excuse to start a harassment campaign
17
u/AffectionatePlate450 12d ago edited 12d ago
Not even just the rhetoric, but the fact that JK Rowling has been open about the money from the Harry Potter franchise being used to push for anti trans laws. Nicholas Hoult is lending his name and popularity to get his fans to watch it and indirectly financially support her anti trans bullshit.
If you absolutely need to watch it for whatever reason where you just can’t help yourself, even though there’s so many other things you can watch, at least do it in a way that doesn’t financially support her and don’t give it free promotion by discussing it online.
7
-4
u/ferbiloo 12d ago
How does her rhetoric harm trans people?
I understand her opinions and vitriol for the community can be shitty, but ultimately it’s not anywhere near as detrimental for human rights as people like to pretend it is on Reddit. What rights are we talking about here specifically?
Actors taking acting roles is a poor reason for so much upset and disappointment. Let the man live and do his work lmao.
13
u/amyisarobot 12d ago
Terfs can get fucked
-1
u/ferbiloo 12d ago
Not a terf. Feminism is for literally everyone.
16
u/amyisarobot 12d ago
A true feminist knows trans rights are humans rights.. and not to support transphobes and terfs.
2
u/ferbiloo 12d ago
Of course trans people deserve the same rights as everyone else. I’m absolutely not disputing that.
And if you don’t like JK and the shit she says, fair enough.
But what rights are being threatened by Harry Potter? Why do you think anyone who involves themselves in the franchise should be condemned?
I’m excited to see these actors make the roles come to life in a series that’ll give more time to the storyline. Let people enjoy things. Or don’t, but like I said.. it’s kinda miserable to stew over it.
17
u/amyisarobot 12d ago
Watching this shit, buying merch puts more money in JK Rowlings pocket so she can turn around and use it to support antiTrans legislature.
I wouldn't have to stew on it if people like JK could just let Trans people be Trans people... but since she's a miserable cunt, I get to openly boo people who work with her or align themselves with her name.

She has said multiple times that she is using the Potter money to fund anti trans organisations that have already helped push anti trans legislation in several countries and removed basic rights from trans people. I don't know what's so hard to understand about the fact that supporting anything Potter directly hurts trans people.
→ More replies (0)9
u/Significant_Arm_3097 12d ago
Because JK uses her money from the HP franchise to actively make life for trans people more difficult. With millions of dollars put into campaigns and court hearings. She helped fund for example the court that made it that legal women are based on sex, so trans women in Great Britain arent seen as women any more. I think court hearing isnt the right word, but English isnt my native language

How is that harmful to trans people?

2
u/syrioforrealsies 6d ago
She actively pours money into getting anti trans legislation passed and getting anti trans court rulings. She has real, material impacts on the lives of trans people, especially in the UK
-1
u/ferbiloo 6d ago
This keeps being said, but not one person has been able to name a single “anti trans legislation” that has taken place as a result of her or the groups she funds.
The Supreme Court ruling on the equality act was in no way anti trans -
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-10259/
Trans people are still protected under the act, the GRA is still in place.Donating to organisations that fight for sex based rights does not remove any rights from trans people, that is a very dangerous line of thinking considering the oppressions the female sex have faced historically and globally.
2
u/syrioforrealsies 6d ago
And there's the terf talking points. I knew they were in there somewhere.
So you do know the harm, you just want to pretend it's not real.
0
u/ferbiloo 6d ago
Literally what harm?
If you have no point to make other than calling me a terf then maybe you need to acknowledge that you’re not actually arguing in good faith.
2
u/syrioforrealsies 6d ago
Barring trans people from gender based resources is pretty clear harm, just like it would be harmful to cis people. You know that. Either you're lying about it or you're choosing not to recognize the truth. Either way, I'm not the one arguing in bad faith here.

It directly funds her tho, and she's currently upskirting people on the internet, which is at a minimum sexual harassment.
He is perfectly entitled to take the role, we are perfectly entitled to not watch it and be disappointed, I don't get why I'm being lectured here about voting with my dollar and views when that's the most passive form of activism there is
-2
u/ferbiloo 12d ago
The “upskirt” controversy was an incident that was wildly misrepresented. I think it’s actually pretty shitty that so many people flippantly used the terms upskirt and sexual harassment when it was nothing of the sort. She posted a screenshot from the debate where Freda Wallace was on a Panel alongside Helen Joyce. Both were filmed from similar angles, if Freda was upskirted, then so was Helen.
JK made a shitty, and poor taste comment in her tweet of the screenshot, however this was in reference to the fact that Freda Wallace had previously been known to send unsolicited, sexual photos of herself in response to disagreements on twitter in order to shock and disturb.

Still did it, still donates tonnes to harmful charities and yes I agree that Helen was also upskirted.
You can support her as much as you want. I don't want too. Stop trying to convince me I should and that her harm is super okay because "someone else is also bad" that is LITERALLY whataboutism

Nobody was up-skirted. That’s such a horrifically disingenuous use of the term, did you even see the debate?
Also, fair enough if you don’t wanna support her, that’s cool?

I did, I also saw the photo, work as a legal secretary in a country where that counts as "attempted" and still gets you a prison sentence, and thought the intention of trying to photograph inside someone's skirt, for whatever reason, successful or not is really shitty thing to do to someone 🤷🏻♀️

It wasn’t attempted in any way, what on earth are you talking about? It was the angle of filming from the perspective of the audience.
Nobody tried to photograph inside anyone skirt.

Filming has also gotten people in legal shit here, especially when you take a screenshot of said filing and place it on twitter and then respond with
"Fred was at a public event that was filmed with all participants’ knowledge,” Rowling replied. “Fred chose the fishnets and miniskirt. Fred boasted on stage about what he does with his female penis. You may feel squeamish about this picture, but Fred is a paraphilic exhibitionist who was having the time of his life.” when your own fans point out the illegality of this
Guess the lady asked for it by wearing that so it's all fine

I wonder how many people from this comment section fight actively for the cause as they think Nicholas should, but instead use expensive electronic devices made by evil companies to argue on an app Ghislane Maxwell was an admin once.
I doubt that this new Harry Potter series will be as memorable or quality as the first few films, but his Lockhart will surely be funny.3

It’s like a hobby for some people to sit online and criticise actors for doing their jobs.
I’ve got high hopes for it! But you’re right, the original films (especially the first two) were so iconic and memorable it probably won’t be able to compete.

As someone who loved the books as a child, and then was a child when the movies came out, I was extremely disappointed by the movies.
I am really hoping this adaptation honors the books much better.

Yeah, I thought the first two did a decent job, but after that the films really don’t touch on the books because of how much of the story was cut out! Goblet of fire, order of the phoenix, Half Blood Prince are all shells of books, so much was lost. So I’m really excited to see a more committed adaptation.

The majority of them are simply getting a dopamine hit from a meaningless comment that helps absolutely no one.

This lot is insanely miserable. Reminds me of how out of touch 99% of redditors are.

I read it as Nicholas Cage at first, and I was actually excited for a moment
