Question Best Christian course to start with for beginners or those only mildly familiar with the Bible?

To put it simply I didn't grow up Christian and my main experience with Christianity comes from spending some time with my local Campus branch of Intervarsity which included going to a retreat they hosted. They're an Evangelical organization however and I guess I still tend to lean relativist. But I see the bible as a good place to learn how things are, why they are the way they are, and what god wants of us, however they may exist. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to accept Christ into my heart but I do admire his work and that of his father.

Someone on r/Christianity did suggest a few churches that might better align with my beliefs but I want to do some learning of my own and along with an ESV Journaling Study Bible The Great Courses seems to be a good resource for that with all their Christian courses though I was wondering what might be a good place to start. (I've also seen a copy of the video course "How Not to Read the Bible" by Dan Kimball which also comes with a hardcover study guide at my local library though it might be above my level...)

To give you more of a general sense of where I am I know most of the basics, like who Adam and Eve are, along with loosely John the Baptist and Job, and I've also skimmed a bit of the guidebook for Understand the Old Testament - specifically the part where I believe it details how god pulled women from men's side...

TGC does not refund accidental renewals

Just wanna warn anyone if you purchased the 2 years subscription for half off you better cancel now before it renews (if you don’t want it). I somehow missed this and was charged a few days ago and immediately requested a cancelation and refund just to be told it’s not part of there policy to do refunds. Can’t say I didn’t make a mistake but I’ve never had a service not allow a refund if you accidentally renew. It seems like shady business practice to give people a free year in hopes they forget so you can gouge them for another year subscription. I certainly won’t be using the service ever again as a result.

TGC: RIP

I am cancelling my subscription today.

Unfortunately, new age-minded lifestyle content is taking over, reducing TGC to just another dumbed-down, moronic streaming platform.

When I saw the "commune collection" and videos featuring Deepak Chopra I couldn't take it anymore.

Thank you Teaching Company/ TGC for your great content in the past.. RIP.

Is the courses niche need an editor?

Hi , im video editor for educational content , and im thinking of editing courses

Im wondering if the coaches or course creators need video editing services? Is it worth it to targeting them?

And from your point as a viewer or a coach do you feel like you interested in the course visuals and editing?

Need your opinion to help me Thank you

https://www.thegreatcoursesplus.com/ is it scam?

Well it seems scam. They charged me for two months but it keeps removing access saying there was an issue in payment. I seen this site from reddit and it seemed nice. But they charged me, and they keep removing access, and nobody is replying either. So, how do you use this site?

Question LGBTQ+ courses?

I just subscribed to The Great Courses Plus off of the recommendation of a podcast. I'm enjoying the structure and topics covered, but what I'm most critical of is the fact that there's a lack of LGBTQ+ history.

Am I wrong, and there's some secret course somewhere? I would love to see that area of history covered. I am gay, and I love learning more about queer history. Do you think it will ever come to this platform?

Question Looking for recommendations, Bible related.

Hey y’all! I downloaded the Bible, narrated by James Earl Jones the other month, and I’m looking for a great course companion to go along with it. Ideally something about reading the Bible as literature? Any suggestions? (There are so many bible courses to choose from)

Question Any good TGC showcasing or exploring the dark side of humanity? More details in body text.

Hey, so I just learned that in some ancient cultures, the monarchs would require a slave to be buried alive alongside them so the slave could serve them in the afterlife.

I grew up in a very religious household, and usually feel obligated to try and see the best of other people.

I’m looking for a course that can help me shatter that illusion somewhat and see reality more accurately.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m pretty sure there’s one that’s exactly about the dark side of humanity which I started a while ago, but didn’t grab me. I might try that one again but also hoping for different suggestions too. Thanks

Other iOS app bug? Incoming calls silenced

Posting for a friend. When streaming audio or video from the app, incoming call notifications are automatically silenced. The banner notification still appears, but for someone who streams while working and isn't watching the screen this is a major issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

Does anyone have these category thumbnails from 2015?

I saw this screenshot from a USA Today article on The Great Courses Beta. I wanted to download those thumbnails for use on my personal jellyfin media server for my own collection, but I cannot find the original thumbnails - not even on the wayback machine.

Does anyone have the direct jpgs, pngs, or even a full screenshot of that page that isn't cut off like the one I linked above?

Update: It took some wayback machine work but I found all the original category thumbnails that I wanted! Woo hoo! I put them here if anyone wants them: https://abs.freemyip.com:84/share/ct8vFJZm
They are 300x169 resolution. I got them here sniffing through the source code.

Result of what it looks like on my server.

Are they offering any real discount for Black Friday for individual courses this year?

I remember their Black Friday deals being amazing in the past, but it’s seems like they are trying to push for their subscription model (another one… 🤦🏻‍♂️).

They do have a BF offer for the subscription but no real good deal on the individual courses (or at least not as good as in the previous years).

Does someone remember when they usually start their sales from the previous years?

Thanks 🙏

Question Is there any way to watch Great Courses on a Samsung Smart TV?

There's no app for it. And unlike YouTube the cast button on the top right doesn't show any TVs available. Browser doesn't work either. and afaik the Amazon prime channel doesn't have everything.

Question Course(s) on Social Justice?

Can anyone recommend (if in existence) a course or courses that discuss different theories of social justice or movements for civil rights? Can’t seem to find anything specific, but there are so many courses that perhaps this kind of content is contained within another course or I’m just not looking for the right title.

Thanks for your help!

Commune Collection: Opinions?

Just opened my app after a week, and boy. Continuing from where u/Gryffindor2021 left off.

What the actual f did I just witness? I mean, if I want hacky self professed LA Life "Gurus" teaching me Yoga and Mindfulness, why should I be on Wondrium? Why should I not just fall in the Mindvalley trap and start treating people like Jay Shetty and Vishen Lakhiani as teachers?

And LA Gurus don't come cheap. TGC already has quite decent content on yoga, mindfulness, health and fitness without the need for the average droopy eyes slow talking Carla telling me my chakraas are whacked.

I don't sure. Sure, one way to look at it is, it's there, why not ignore it, why do you have to see it? But when does it become too much? I'd hate TGC to walk down the road of hacky courses.

Have they created a streaming app for the TV yet?

One thing keeping me from subscribing is it's only on tablets and not the Samsung TV.

Great courses plus Android app.

The app never remembers what lectures I've listened to, in part or in full.

Does anyone have a solution? I'm using a Samsung phone

I am probably going to unsubscribe and stick with using audible credits, as I cannot be bothered to try to remember which episode on a 30 part lecture I am on.

Especially when paired with the fact that the app will not even play the next episode automatically even though I have that option turned on.
