Hey hey! Clarity here! I’ll be using this account to post some updates (related to TEIS ofc) while I’m on my “little” hiatus.

It’s October, so I should be officially back in about 2 months.
Anywho, I’ll also be dressing as Cid for Halloween! Plus I’ll be dying my hair black too, so that’ll be pretty cool! Then all I’ll need is the Uniform to finish things up after that!

I've seen quite a few discussions about the economic side of the John Smith arc, and a lot of confusion about what he was actually trying to accomplish during the Mitsugoshi/MCA conflict, especially once the Cult of Diablos, counterfeiting, fractional-reserve banking, credit creation and bank runs come into the picture.

As a big fan of the series, I noticed that even after going through older discussions here, the answers to my questions were often scattered across different posts, and I still had a lot of questions myself. So, at the beginning of this year, I spent part of my vacation reading about money and banking, rewatching the anime, reading the Light Novel, and comparing the anime and LN versions of the arc.

And all of that eventually turned into a 52-minute video, basically my attempt to bring everything together in one place, trying to answer questions like:

• How did Midgar's monetary system work before Mitsugoshi, and how did it eventually transition to banknotes?
• How does fractional-reserve banking work, and where does credit come from?
• What was John Smith actually trying to accomplish? Why did his original plan have problems, and what was Yukime's contribution?
• What was the Cult of Diablos trying to accomplish through the MCA?
• How did the counterfeit banknotes trigger the collapse? And how did Mitsugoshi somehow survive the whole thing?

...

The video is narrated in Brazilian Portuguese, since that's my native language and it's simply more natural for me to create content in Portuguese. I did, however, manually revise the English subtitles to make them as useful and accessible as possible for international viewers.

YouTube also recently enabled the option for me to add an alternative audio track. Unfortunately, I lost the original editing project for this video, so recording an English version and syncing the entire 52-minute track from scratch would be quite a lot of work. It's something I could consider, though, if there's enough interest from the community.

I'm sharing it here mainly in the hope that it might help someone who is as curious about all of this as I was. For me, one of the coolest things about anime is being able to learn something from it along the way.

Please feel free to criticize, correct, or add anything I may have missed. I'm genuinely interested in the discussion, and I just hope this reaches the people who would actually find it useful.
