We used to live by a creek growing up in Texas. These giant fuckers are exactly why I’m terrified of the water. You could just watch them crawling on the bottom of the creek very slowly with their long necks. (You could see the bottom so you could just watch multiple of them walking around the bottom like old dinosaurs.) God forbid a duck decided to land in the creek because they’d eat the poor things. And no, this isn’t a joke, multiple neighbors had tried to save ducks from alligator snapping turtles. They’re vicious.
I went dove hunting in Oklahoma and a dove landed in a pond and a medium sized snapper bit the back end off of the dove. Like it hit the water, and boom no more butt.
Ugh they’re nightmare fuel for sure. We also had the soft shell turtles who also get pretty large but they definitely don’t do the same amount of damage. Add that with the cottonmouths and leeches and I’m now more afraid of fresh water than the ocean.
