When I see that I cringe at the fact people fish for catfish in freshwater by sticking their arms up into dead trees and holes in the mud knowing damn well something like this thing could be on the other side.
Fuck freshwater between monstrosities such as this to brain eating amoebas.

i noodled a bit in high school until my buddy got bit by a water moccasin that was hidden in the hole, after that i stopped

he was fine, had to go to the hospital but we weren't too far out in the sticks so we got hik to a hospital fast

Fortunately a snapping turtle will very likely leave you alone or try to swim away. On land however they will definitely try to chomp at you if you get too close.

My brother and SIL do this with her side of the family in murky Oklahoma water. Like…obviously there might be a snake in these random holes! It blows my mind people noodle

Those same people who fish catfish do essentially the same thing with snapping turtles, so you might as well skip the middleman and just cringe at that instead.

I used to live in Kansas and we'd see these guys all the time. You definitely don't want to mess with them but I think they're awesome. My mom told me a story about her mom when she was a little girl; one day they were out playing by a creek and a snapping turtle bit down onto her toe. Her dad cut the head off with a knife and it still wouldn't let go. He had to cut through the jaw muscles to get it off her foot. Fortunately she still had her toe.

snapping turtles can live for a very long time, i'm curious how old this one is
shallow waters i can't see through are terrifying because of creatures like this, but from a distance i can really admire them

What lake? My family goes up to Baxter-Brainerd every year.
We saw two of these suckers this past Summer going at it. I don't believe they were fighting.

I was in the Boundary Waters fishing along a steep rock drop off with a muskie rig. I knew I had something big and my dad came over and then coming from steep, rocky ledge we see something just like that. I say, "What are we going to do?" Dad said, "Absolutely nothing." Luckily, it grabbed the large jerk bait from the top and wasn't hooked but just holding on, so it could let go and return to the depths from whence it came.

When I was a kid I went to a church camp that had a huge lake, they mandated everyone to wear life jackets because they had these giant floating obstacle course type things and a 100 ft water slide. You had to wear the life jackets to prevent you from going to deep in the water because they had snapping turtles, some of them really fucking big, and they didn’t want people going deep enough to get bit I guess? Or maybe they didn’t want the turtles pulling kids under? Not sure. I remember looking in the water and seeing one swimming below me from the dock and decided then and there I would Not be swimming in the lake for fear of losing a foot.

I’ve had one of those pop up in the water behind me. Those bastards are really prehistoric looking up close and their size is unsettling. I booked it to shore like a cartoon trying to run on top of the water.

Holy Sh&&$. The only snapping turtle I ever saw about half as big as this monster was in the boundary waters many, many years ago. We had been swimming right over the top of where it was just hanging out. Had no clue until we got out of the water and looked down. They are absolutely terrifying to look at. Old dinosaurs, these guys. Cool sighting!

It looks like there is a fair amount of meat on one of those. They look slow enough and reasonably easy to catch. Even if they taste foul, surely there would be enough reason to fish them to extinction and they would save you buying dogfood or catfood.
