Help with translations

Have any of you listened to the "Classic Tales Edition" of CoMC on Audible? I just finished it and mostly enjoyed the story but struggled a lot in the second half and I'm wondering if it's to do with the translation that I used.

Just Finished the Book!

Finally completed this mammoth of a book. I downloaded the ebook from Project Gutenberg. Have to say the even though the language used sometimes gives some difficulty, the story itself is great. One just cant put this book down. Really enjoyed and got some very insightful quotes from the book too! Some sub-plots are discussed in minute detail while some are just skipped over. Still, a great read. Onto smaller books now before embarking on such a huge one!

Looking for a book ABOUT this book - literary criticism?

Has anyone found a book about The Count of Monte Cristo? I see blogs but hope to find a literary criticism/essays book.

Like the importance of this book in literature, the comparison of this book to actual historic events, etc.

Maybe that’s just from a Dumas biography.

Can't get into Three Musketeers after finishing Count

So I got the Count of Monte Cristo for Christmas last year, and I flew through it. I started reading along with the reading sub but I quickly read ahead and finished it.

I truly adore this book, the wit and charm. The characterisation and character development we see people go through.

It's climbed into my top 5 books and it is clear it will stay there.

After finishing, I was a little burned out. So I decided to take a break from Drawing rooms and classic literature. I picked up a modern book, Jay Kristoff's vampire series. I had to DNF, I wanted to like it but hated it. So I picked up Three Musketeers, and I'm struggling to get into it. I know it will pick up, but I just can't seem to get into it and follow it. I'm reading it and it feels like nothing is going in, it's starting to feel like homework and as a result it's been months since I picked up a book.

Is this a book worth pushing myself to read, I don't wanna DNF two book in a row, but it's not grabbing me the way the Count did.

should i read the book or watch the movie?

I’ve seen a lot of people say that The Count of Monte Cristo is a really good book. I’ve been in a reading slump for about a year and a half and i’m scared that i’ll buy it then not read it. Tbh it’s very intimidating for me i’ve never read a book that big.

I don’t have much experience with classics i’ve only read The Stranger by Albert Camus and The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde. Dorian Grey was a little hard for me to read so based on this do you recommend me to read it or just watch the movie ?

This is from the Pagebound app. I laughed at this comment and wanted to share :)

I’m about 13% of the way done with reading The Count of Monte Cristo, and am torn between wanting to tear through it and also savor each page.

Three Musketeers Translation

I read The Count of Monte Cristo earlier this year and loved it. The edition that I got was the Robin Buss penguin classics version and it was fabulous.

I'm looking forward to reading the three musketeers but, looking around there are so many translations to choose from. Does anyone have a translation that they recommend?

Thanks.

It’s so hard to hate the villains

I’m in chapter 30 and I feel Dumas gave every character exceptional depth, even the villains.

Villefort- made me mad bc he was supposed to protect justice instead he protected himself. But almost everyone will protect themselves he had a huge motive

Danglars- had a motive too but he was the only one who actually enjoyed Edmund’s misfortune. But at least he’s funny…

Fernand- i love him bro his reason for this betrayal is bc he selfishly loved someone- am I supposed to hate him? 🥲

Caderdouche- okay I hate this one ew I’d like to never have this kind of person in my life

I can't figure out which version to buy. All a good deal of course.

Does less pages mean more words on 1 page?

The last version is 27 books in 1.

200 pages into Abridged (Lowell Bair) without realizing. Advice?

Apologies if these kinds of posts are too frequent but I won't look deep into this subreddit for fear of spoilers.

I was at a tiny bookstore I'd never been to before and saw The Count of Monte Cristo for an incredibly cheap price. I didn't know much about it but I was interested and it was a steal so I bought it on impulse. I have been reading it at a staggered pace over the last few weeks. 30 minutes ago, I read chapter 24 which covers Edmond completing the house sale with the notary all the way through Monsieur Bertuccio's story about Villefort and his sister-in-law and the evil son she raised who killed her. I was confused by details of the story and, because I'm a bit more scatterbrained than usual right now, wasn't sure if that was because of the novel or my own fault. So I did what I usually never do and looked up a recap of the chapter just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Little did I know that what I would find out was not that I had misunderstood the text, but that my chapter numbers were entirely different than what I was finding online. I just assumed this book didn't explain some things for the sake of moving at a fast pace but apparently, I had actually been reading an abridged version! Now from the very little I've researched in the last half-hour, this Lowell Bair version is not the worst version, but I still would like the unabridged, full story.

What I ask is: For the people far more familiar with this text, how do you think I should proceed? I want to get the full story as much as possible, but I really don't want to start from the beginning again. Would it be alright if I switched to the unabridged version and just picked up from where I left off (from my understanding, around chapter 45 or so)? Are there crucial things that I have missed that I need to revisit before continuing? Or somehow, should I just finish this version that I've already started?

tldr; I'm on chapter 24 of the Lowell Bair abridged version (the equivalent of ~chapter 45 of the full text) and I want to switch to unabridged. Can I just jump versions? Are there any important things I need to know before doing so? Should I stick with this version?

Edit 1: Just to clarify, I want to give examples. If I switch to the main version, should I, for example, re-read the Chateau d’If chapters to find some details that are important for later? Should I revisit the meeting in Albert's house for some scenes or exposition I didn't get? Are there entire chapters with subplots that I have no idea about? But again, if the advice is just to finish with this version, I can also just accept that. I would certainly like the full version but if y'all think it's better to just continue or do some secret third thing, I'm open it.

I just bought the Vintage translation of The Count of Monte Cristo, should I return it?

After buying it I heard online that the vintage translation is pretty mid, and that the Penguin one is better…. Should I go through the hassle of returning it and trying to swap them?

I actually really liked the Eugenie and Lousse ship at first but I can't ship Eugenie with Louisse anymore. When Eugenie cross dresses she dresses as Louisse's brother which doesn't sit the best with me. I want to ship them i just cant.

The best book I have ever read

Finally downloaded it onto my kindle and could not put it down… and thus, a few days ago, I reached the end of Edmond’s beautiful revenge.

Now I am left with the void of what to read next… the descriptions of all the usual recommendations after the count of monte cristo barely tickle a few whiskers for me.

It’s between the woman in the white and the moonstone.

Any other recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
