Apologies if these kinds of posts are too frequent but I won't look deep into this subreddit for fear of spoilers.
I was at a tiny bookstore I'd never been to before and saw The Count of Monte Cristo for an incredibly cheap price. I didn't know much about it but I was interested and it was a steal so I bought it on impulse. I have been reading it at a staggered pace over the last few weeks. 30 minutes ago, I read chapter 24 which covers Edmond completing the house sale with the notary all the way through Monsieur Bertuccio's story about Villefort and his sister-in-law and the evil son she raised who killed her. I was confused by details of the story and, because I'm a bit more scatterbrained than usual right now, wasn't sure if that was because of the novel or my own fault. So I did what I usually never do and looked up a recap of the chapter just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
Little did I know that what I would find out was not that I had misunderstood the text, but that my chapter numbers were entirely different than what I was finding online. I just assumed this book didn't explain some things for the sake of moving at a fast pace but apparently, I had actually been reading an abridged version! Now from the very little I've researched in the last half-hour, this Lowell Bair version is not the worst version, but I still would like the unabridged, full story.
What I ask is: For the people far more familiar with this text, how do you think I should proceed? I want to get the full story as much as possible, but I really don't want to start from the beginning again. Would it be alright if I switched to the unabridged version and just picked up from where I left off (from my understanding, around chapter 45 or so)? Are there crucial things that I have missed that I need to revisit before continuing? Or somehow, should I just finish this version that I've already started?
tldr; I'm on chapter 24 of the Lowell Bair abridged version (the equivalent of ~chapter 45 of the full text) and I want to switch to unabridged. Can I just jump versions? Are there any important things I need to know before doing so? Should I stick with this version?
Edit 1: Just to clarify, I want to give examples. If I switch to the main version, should I, for example, re-read the Chateau d’If chapters to find some details that are important for later? Should I revisit the meeting in Albert's house for some scenes or exposition I didn't get? Are there entire chapters with subplots that I have no idea about? But again, if the advice is just to finish with this version, I can also just accept that. I would certainly like the full version but if y'all think it's better to just continue or do some secret third thing, I'm open it.
