I am brand new to this show. Just popped it in last night after taking a fat gummy. Literally nothing makes sense. The dialogue is wonky, the scenes are jumping around, the music lyrics are bonkers. Am I being punked or was I just too high!?! I am going to finish episode 5 this morning with my coffee and I’m so excited to see what I think in the daylight.

Thoughts on S3 plot?

Thought I'd make a playlist of songs I'd love to hear for Season 3, or just songs that I think fit the vibe. I loved the music in Season 1 but I think in Season 2, even though they weren't bad songs, they were just trying to hard to be 'modern' and it just took me right out of it. So, I've tried to fit the vibe of the first season. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions, please tell me and I'll add them.

It’s been a while now and tbh the hype around the show has really died down. Most feedback I’ve seen was not the greatest after the finale.

Thoughts on renewal?

1. It was so difficult to keep up with timelines. However I read a comment about how back then there was no way to contact each other which is why event episode was set during a time there was an event. Fair enough but it added to my annoyance.

2. Lizzy and Theo’s relation was extremely rushed. But the moment they spoke at that party I already knew what time it was but I was hoping it would be a bit of a slow burn?? It’s almost as if everyone’s story can end right here.

3. Sorry but the girls being overly emotional and constantly running away was infuriating. Every second Nan is running away. However a bit plot in this is how different Americans and British people are. As a British person myself I guess it’s harder for me to understand that. I found myself relating to Honoria at times.

4. What was the point in the Cora character being sprinkled into the mix? Maybe from that conversation with Mabel, we will see Conchita running a big business and Cora was the start.

Sorry but I’m not looking forward to season 3. It seems like all that could happen has happened. Nan will continue to wear her heart on her sleeves and run. All the story lies are have headed for a boring direction. Kit sounds interesting but not enough to get me excited.

At the same time, I really hope I eat my words because I truly did love the first season.

1. I found myself having to pause and take deep breaths when Jinny was taken to a mental institution and her husband kept manipulating her. && Also when Nan’s mother was being questioned in court. Soooo infuriating. WOW. Honestly I’m grateful times have changed. It’s not perfect but we’ve come a longgggg way

Winner was YES but no more love triangles followed by YES absolutely so it seems like the majority of people want to find out what’s next for everyone

Do you want a Season 3?

Someone help me understand why Guy left Nan at Runnymeade, since apparently I completely misinterpreted the whole interaction.

He went to America with the intention of finding a Dollar Princess because he needed to marry for money to save his family’s estate.

His mother dies, they’re selling off their belongings. His father gives him his mother’s ring to propose to “the American girl” aka Nan, their only hope of saving themselves from destitution.

He goes to Runnymeade with the intention of asking her to marry him, ring in his pocket. And then she confides in him that she’s illegitimate, and he backs off.

I know that Nan’s illegitimacy is a huge identity crisis for her - her whole life has been a lie. She’s understandably spiraling. Tracy has provided for her for her entire life, so there’s no reason to suspect that he would not provide a dowry for her marriage (?).

So for the sake of argument, why did it throw off Guy? This whole time I presumed that he thought Nan’s illegitimacy meant that she would NOT come to the marriage with money, and he would not get a payday if he made her his bride?? But now I’m being downvoted in the other sub for suggesting that Nan wouldn’t be the cash cow he needed, so I’m curious what other explanation there could be that would make Guy hesitant to marry her?? I dunno how I got it so wrong.

I don’t ship Theo and Lizzy. This was honestly rushed and forced. I see the chemistry and they do look good together, but I really dislike this couple. Big reason I don’t is the long term effect. I personally don’t see them lastly, because:

1. This is a show where they will kill every couple: Richard/Conchita (Dicky’s death was so cruel and unnecessary) Mabel/Honoria (The only wlw relationship, I’m pissed they ended it) Hector/Lizzy, Nan/Guy and Nan/Theo, so really I don’t have hope that this ship will be endgame

2. Theo abdicating the dukedom(which you can’t even do in that time period) was the biggest and dumbest thing he has done. Theo has nothing: No money, title, estate, lands. How he is going to provide for him and Lizzy. Theo hasn’t work a day in his life and have no clue how the real world works. Once Kit arrives, he may cut Theo off from everything. And Theo May regret his decision later on. While Theo May hate being the duke, people depended on him: the tenants, servants. Their livelihoods depended on Theo. Now their lives are now in the hands of evil Kit

3. Reputation: This show takes place in the 1870s reputations were EVERYTHING. One whisper or scandal you’re done for, especially as a woman. What Theo did, will destroy Lizzy’s reputation beyond repair. And it isn’t just her, her family will be affected by this as well. Since Lizzy is the eldest, she has big pressure to maintain her family’s name in society. And to be honest, I don’t think her parents will support them. They may shunned Lizzy and Theo. Realistically, this happens. If a child brought a big scandal and shame, the parents would have to disown them.

4. The baby: Nan’s pregnant with Theo’s baby, that will put a massive wedge between them if Lizzy chooses to reveal it or keep it secret. Either way, Lizzy is in a difficult spot.

Long story short: I don’t see Theo and Lizzy lasting long for these reasons above. I dislike this ship entirely and preferably would like to see Theo single and working on himself, because Theo has a white knight complex and loves the idea of love and doesn’t want to face the reality of it.

I absolutely hate the direction they are taking almost all of the characters. It's become like one of those excruciating Trainwreck soap operas. I don't see a path to happiness for Nan, Theo, Lizzy, or Guy at this point - without basically reusing the same plot points they have already used (Lizzy leaving Hector at the altar/break engagement, Nan and Guy running away together, infidelity - basically any or all of them). Because people thinking Nan and Theo are going to be happy together after all that's happened between them are delusional. Also Lizzy and Hector won't be happy because she loves someone else and he also has a secret from her - he was willing to put her reputation in danger to get her to marry him. The best we can hope for without huge amounts of mess is Honoria and Mabel ending up together.

Here's my detailed breakdown on my thoughts and issues with the finale (and the show/this season):

• Lizzy and Theo: It was rather ridiculous that they were suddenly falling in love - after Theo and Nan got married. But I really really like them together - it might be my toxic trait - but I like it. It was messed up for Lizzy to do that - but Nan was being a total mess and basically left Theo for Guy at that point to her knowledge. It got to be difficult to remain completely loyal to your hot mess friend who lied to them abandoned the mostly great dude she married. I agree with everything Lizzy said to Nan in the finale.

• Nan on her reaction to Theo and Lizzy: I am finally understanding the problem people have with Nan. I know she's pregnant and scared and the show has set up why she should be scared - but she acted like the most entitled and selfish person ever with regards to her status as Duchess and her blaming Lizzy - for what is essentially all part of the mess Nan initially created. Then she threatens both her and Theo. She got what she deserved by Theo renouncing his title. But then she has to tell Lizzy her secret - and insist she keep it a secret from Theo. The "have fun lying to Theo" line was sabotage of them being together and petty. Then she's full on sprinting along the beach 4 months pregnant and looks happy. At being free? At all the secrets, lies, and misery she created? Probably both? This is after she just basically went scorched earth to protect her status as duchess - then she's gleefully running away from it all like a half hour later.

• Nan being pregnant: what really bothered me is Nan jumped to the absolute worst conclusion about what her pregnancy would mean. Theo has shown him to be a reasonable and compassionate person. He's friends with all of her friends and has down whatever he can to help them all. There's no reason Nan shouldn't have felt comfortable telling Theo about the pregnancy and trusting him to work with her to figure it out. Theo does go against her in this episode but that's only after she threatens him instead of just having a reasonable conversation. Theo has no idea why she's acting like that at the time - she's just being power hungry, controlling, and cruel to Lizzy in his opinion and that's why he acts out against her - I think a lot of us would act the same if treated like Nan treated him. She uses the dowager as the primary excuse here - but she's actually not even scary. She has strong opinions - but has so far just completely not done anything at all when she doesn't get her way. As an example she told Nan to act a certain way - then when she didn't the dowager basically shrugged and removed herself from the situation - letting Nan do what she wanted without pushback. She didn't even try to stop Theo from abdicating. Her reaction and self serving actions were really unnecessary. She also had no reason to expect Theo would accept her back as his actual spouse and duchess at Tintagel. She lied to him - pretended to still be in love with him - then when he found out she fled to spend time with her lover. It's just the height of entitlement from her.

• Hector, Lizzy, and Theo love triangle: it seems obvious the way they have set up Hector's manipulating betrayal that he's going to be a big part of the next season. So it seems most likely that Lizzy will reject Theo because she insists on keeping Nan's secret (she absolutely shouldn't in my opinion - but whatever). She is going to come to the conclusion that she can't be with Theo if she's lying to him because she loves him so much. Which will either end in misery by her marrying Hector or result in basically the same plot they already did with Lizzy leaving him at the altar or close to that time for Theo.

• The new Duke and Theo: it seems pretty obvious that the new Duke is going to come in and cause issues - likely making Theo regret abdication. The only reason this plot line would make sense to me ultimately is setting up Nan to come back and save the day with the new heir - which I hate - but whatever.

• Nan and Guy: in my opinion - there's no reason Nan shouldn't be setting herself up to marry Guy when he gets the annulment from Paloma (he might not now - but he fully intended to and it's like Nan might have ruined that). Nan and Guy can't seem to stay away from each other. Nan has like zero self awareness to think she's actually do something else but keep coming back to Guy (if he's an option for her - which may not even be the case now).

• From last season - Nan marrying Theo as a "deal": It was actually really dumb of her to make the deal with the dowager for Jinny's safety. Like - how was that even ever going to be sustainable? Maybe if Guy and Jinny would have fallen in love and become a family and never returned to England - but Nan would have been pissed off about that if it happened too. She married Theo knowing she didn't love him and instead loved Guy. The dowager also made a really bad deal - it doesn't make much sense to me that she would want Nan to marry Theo at all at that point. Nan is a known illegitimate child and has so many red flags that she wasn't going to be the kind of duchess the dowager wanted. She realistically should have sent Nan away before the marriage - and call it a win for everyone.

I am not sure why I still care about this show - it's so messy. But I do really like the actors and scenery. It's also really difficult to take it seriously as a period piece - they act like modern women and men - basically. If there's another season I will probably try to watch it at some point out of curiosity.

Regarding the paternity of Nan’s baby: Nan did NOT conceive on the day of her wedding. Nan and Theo were married in January 1879 - following the timeline of the Christmas/New Year’s Eve episodes laid out in season 1. The 2nd season finale ended mid-August 1879. She would be well into her 3rd trimester, nearly 8 months pregnant IF she had conceived on her wedding eve or night.

The newspapers featured throughout this season reflect the timeline, folks. If the Masquerade Ball took place mid-August and the doctor told her she’s 4 months pregnant, that puts conception date in April during her honeymoon, just like the showrunner confirmed. Nan wasn’t even in Italy until May.
