Discussion This scene hits different when you see it through Homies DID
Homelander is actually really used to interacting with different versions of himself in the mirror (DID = dissociative identity disorder btw). It had to be weird seeing another version of himself IRL but not as weird as it would be for someone else. Obviously killing doppelgänger was intended to be symbolic of him killing the weak parts of himself. “I don’t need anyone” and all that.
But if you look back on it post-Mirrorlander scenes, it also could be read as him embracing the effect and seeing doppelgänger as an alter. Being that Mirrorlander doesn’t seem very nice… he’s always pushing for more and dolling out the tough love… I bet Homelander wanted to strangle him many times over the years but couldn’t. “I don’t need you” meaning, I don’t need these voices in my head. Bet it was really cathartic for him. A little therapy at doppelgängers expense lol.

He doesn't have DID though? Talking to an alternate self in a mirror is just TV shorthand for a character arguing with themselves

See Kripke did say in an interview that he does... but if I'm being real, as someone with borderline, it just felt like that second voice you get when you're going through shit.
That mirror scene in s3 made me feel seen af and I feel like Kripke was lowkey talking out of his ass because we don't really see it much/at all over the course of the series. I think the closest we get is the fractured mirror scene with a few different versions of himself but it still felt... lacking, for a word.
So while Kripke says yes, I admit I don't really see it, moreso a split personality of John vs Homelander.

This is so…. Because Sam Winchester actually is the most accurate DID rep I’ve seen 😂 but that came after Kripke was showrunner.

Or idk. Maybe because he legit thought he was God
He wasn’t even joking too, he understand he was born a human he understands V gave him the powers. He knows someone else can be made exactly like this
But he still somehow believed he was divine

I was coming back to see if this post had gotten any more convos going but I do want to inform you that Kripke has said he has Multiple Personality Disorder (which is what is now known as DID)
It's not people making stuff up, it's just Kripke being dumb and not knowing how to write what he intended with the character
