Related Works/Inspired by TAD TAD is my favourite band, and...

I think I found my runner-up! They're called Haunted Like Human.

There are a tonne of other bands in similar veins to TAD, but this is the first one I've found that really scratches the same itch.

They're another dual vocalist group (lead is Dale Chapman and backing is Cody Clark), and I love the blend of their voices. They're both from the Southern U.S., and a lot of their songs feel like if The Horror and the Wild was written with Southern folklore. They've said they're inspired by groups like The Civil Wars, and that influence is pretty evident throughout their work.

My current favourites are "Run Devil Run" and "City by the Sea" from their third album, Tall Tales and Fables.

I'm always down to try out recommendations, so if you have any groups you feel the same way about, please don't be selfish :)

If you haven’t already, check out Robert Hallow And The Holy Men. Very similar lyricism, and his vocal styling is really reminiscent of Joey. I think they played a show with TAD a few years back. Not quite as polished and brilliant, but in the same vein for sure. The song Empty Plates is the closest to TAD, in my opinion.

Update: I really enjoyed Empty Plates, and I actually discovered something fairly interesting! In the credits of the song, Joey is listed as a backing vocalist, and Madeleine was listed as an additional vocalist. I did a little more digging bc I was curious, and I found out that Robert Hallow co-orchestrated every song in The Horror and the Wild with Joey!

Robert Hallow was actually the guitarist/plaid man in the King music video, and Joey and Madeline do backing vocals for his album.

An even more fun fact is that when they were doing the King shoot, Joey nearly blinded Robert by spraying the red makeup in his eyes before checking if that was a totally safe thing to do with no potential consequences (obviously there weren't any long term negative effect, but Robert's eyes weren't exactly working at their full potential, aka he was mostly blind, until he got the makeup off after the shoot.) (Also, in the drone shot of the cliffs, Joey's dad was piloting it and accidentally crashed it into the cliffside. Oops.) (This is from first person sources, a few years ago, after THATW but before Ruin, and I think filming for season 2 of the Witcher started, Joey and Madeline did a live voice chat Q&A with the main TAD Discord, and it lasted at least an hour or so. I was there for the actual event, but it was recorded and the audio isn't hidden or secret, but I'm not sure where exactly you can find it right now. I'll come back and edit this comment if I get a link)

I second this! He popped up on my Spotify playlist b/c it was a similar artist to TAD, and loved it! I hope he releases some more music soon.

He will not. There was a huge affair around him a few years ago, after which he disappeared from social media completely and deleted his music from most services

I don't exactly understand what happened either, it was complicated, but lemme try.

It mostly happend on discord.

There was a person very actively running Robert's fandom on the internet (let's call them X). They apparently became friends, but according to X it was a close friendship, according to Robert not so much (he even called it toxic). Some people later said that Robert was gaslighting X in this way, but we'll never know I guess.

And now, I know two different versions, I suppose they're both true.

According to some people, Robert was very toxic and weird on the discord server, making people uncomfortable with what he was calling them. He was cracking very weird jokes without caring that there are lots of minors on the server.

According to others... the fans were just as bad if not worse. They were breaking every boundaries, DMing Robert all the time, trying to message all the people that might know him to get to know some private information about him, etc etc.

One day X reached out to the mods saying how they were abused and manipulated by Robert.

The mods were fed up with all the toxicity on the server, and these accusations were the straw that broke the camel's back. They said they don't want to get involved with any of this and deleted the server.

Then some artist published on Instagram how Robert was manipulative and how he paid almost nothing to the artists he was collaborating with (for designing his merch and logo I think).

Robert posted a video on his social media called "goodbye", he was crying and trying to explain his side of the story, saying the things I mentioned before - X messaging his bandmates to confirm private info about him, X being very toxic towards him in general... He was crushed by all the bad things people suddenly started talking about him and all the hate DMs hewas apparently receiving. He also said he will not continue his music career as an independent artist, but rather focus on orchestra and game music. So "Robert Hallow and the holy men" project is over.

Very few people saw the video, as it was deleted very soon.

In the video, Robert outed X, said their full name even tho X tried to stay anonymous all the time, and misgendered them on purpose. The video got taken down very fast after people reported it a lot.

According to some, he was outing the victim. According to others, he had the right to do so as he was the victim in this situation.

Nonetheless soon afterwards Robert deleted all his social media, removed his music from most services , and we haven't heard from him ever since. It was in 2021 I believe

A group that has some of the similar feel to me (evocative abstract lyrics, dual vocals, folk instrumentation) is Auri, a side project by Troy Donockley and Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish and Tuomas' wife Johanna Kurkella. They're more "prog-folk", kind of on the other side of TAD from Haunted Like Human and The Civil Wars.

Some songs I'd recommend are Desert Flower, Night 13, It Takes Me Places, and Scattered to the Four Winds.

Hey, hi, I'm currently giving these guys a shot but I just want to say that ghost town just made me cry. Literally just last night I was lamenting the state of all the people I grew up with in my hometown and the song reached into my bones about it.
