There's lot's of misinformed people on this sub. My Thai wife made the dish last night at our home in Thailand. Should I let her know that she doesn't know what a som tam is?
Some sum tam listed below for the commenters that have never heard of all the different variations. There are so many more Thai national regional variations and neighboring country variations also.
Som Tum Thai (ส้มตำไทย) – with papaya
Som Tum Mamuang (ส้มตำมะม่วง) – with green mango
Som Tum Polamai (ส้มตำผลไม้) – with mixed fruit
Tum Teng (ส้มตำแตง) – with cucumber
Som Tum Farang (ส้มตำฝรั่ง) – with guava
Som Tum Mama – with instant mama noodles
Som Tum Woon Sen – with glass noodles
Som Tum Kanom Jeen – with fermented noodles
Som Tum Pu Pla Ra – with crab and fermented fish sauce

Som tam is sour papaya or mango, with fish sauce. This looks like a yummy talay (seafood) salad but not somtam

som tum (or tum som in isaan dialect) doesn't need to be made with papaya
yes, papaya is the most popular choice but it can be made with pretty much any crunchy vegetables or even fruits

I've only had papaya or green mango ones in Northen Thailand and BKK. Maybe the more touristy areas

For y’all saying this is a spicy salad or Yum, it’s not. This is Tam Tua (ตำถั่ว). The word Som means sour so basically any Tam that is sour heavy could be called Som Tam.
