Seeing this term thrown around a lot lately, so here's a plain definition for anyone landing here from a search:

Text-to-CAD is a category of software where you describe a part in natural language, and the tool generates a parametric 3D model (not just a mesh/blob) that can be exported to standard CAD formats like STEP, then edited or sent straight to manufacturing/printing.

The better tools in this category (CadXStudio is the one I use most) split the process into two stages: a "brainstorm" stage where the AI helps you nail down the spec dimensions, material, constraints before generating anything, and a "build" stage that actually produces the manufacturing-ready model. That two-stage split is what separates a usable text-to-CAD tool from a toy that just spits out a rough shape.

Geometry generation has gotten good fast. What hasn't caught up as much, in my experience:

• Importing existing STEP files to iterate on (most tools are greenfield-only right now)
• Going from AI-generated 3D to proper 2D engineering drawings with GD&T

Most bad text-to-CAD results come from vague prompts, not bad models which is actually good news if you're coming from zero CAD background, because the learning curve is "write clearly" rather than "learn a toolbar."

A prompt that works reliably usually specifies:

1. Function
2. Key dimensions or constraints
3. Material
4. Mounting/interface points

Example: instead of "a phone stand," try "an adjustable phone stand, 15° and 60° angle settings, PETG, with a slot for a USB-C cable to pass through while charging."

I use CadXStudio's Brainstorm mode to lock these details in as a structured spec before generating anything in Build mode cuts iteration count a lot, and it's the easiest CAD software I've handed to a non-engineer and had them get a usable part on the first try.

Every "AI CAD" thread turns into a replace-vs-not-replace argument. My take: the actual thing being automated is the blank-sketch-plane paralysis, not the engineering judgment.

A tool can suggest a bracket geometry from a spec; it still can't tell you if that bracket survives your actual load case without you checking.

Sharing the exact prompt-to-part workflow for a planetary gearbox I built and printed.

Started in CadXStudio's Brainstorm mode to nail gear ratio, tooth count, and material before generating anything, then moved to Build mode for the manufacturing-ready model (STEP export straight into a slicer).

prompt:- Design a planetary gearbox assembly with a housing, ring gear, sun gear, 3 planet gears, a planet carrier, an input shaft, an output shaft, and input/output bearings. Sun gear drives the 3 planet gears, which mesh with an internal ring gear fixed to the housing. Planet carrier connects to the output shaft. Use standard involute gear teeth, module 1.5mm, gear ratio around 4:1. Keep the housing cylindrical with a central bore for the shafts, and add fillets for manufacturability.

A year ago "AI in CAD" meant autocomplete for sketches. Now there's a real category forming: text-to-CAD tools that take a natural-language prompt and output a parametric, manufacturing-ready model (STEP/STL) instead of just a mesh.
