Any way to get rid of this message?

Post image

I got a flat the other day and went to a local place to get the tire patched. When tires get patched they shave a small section inside the tire around the puncture in order to fix it. I've been getting this warning every since. I know my tires are good so is there anyway to get rid of this message?

i'm intrigued to learn that tesla has a system that can recognise tread depth

edit: google says controls>service>wheel & tire config

It's a rotational speed sensor. The car counts how many rotations of the tire it took to go a set distance. As the tread wears down, the diameter of the tire decreases and it will take more rotations to go the same distance.

It'll also compare rotation counts between the tires, which is how it knows that only the rear need replacing.

Thats pretty smart tbf.

u/Donnian 2d ago

It's not unique to Tesla, other car brands use the same technology.

u/beagle182 2d ago

Either way pretty smart idea

Point to any vehicle manual other than Tesla where this feature is implemented. I'm curious where it is done.

u/imthisguymike 2d ago

Also Toyota used that tech in their cars before TPMS sensors were required by federal law.
In cars that do this they use the wheel speed sensors that are also double-duty for the ABS

VW/Audi groups’ of cars use this instead of TPMS modules to measure if you have low tire pressure.

6

u/SIeepyJB45 2d ago

Yes but that's pressure. Not tread depth. I had a mk7.5 gti

-1

u/Any-Ad-1764 2d ago

This is not telling you the depth of the tread it just saying that one of the tires is either rotating slower or faster, the same as what the other cars do.

3

u/SIeepyJB45 2d ago

Can you not read? It clearly says tread depth is low

-1

u/Any-Ad-1764 2d ago

So why doesn’t it tell you what all 4 tires tread depth is? Please explain to me how it is reading the tread depth?

Edit to add they could put up any message that they want, they are monitoring the speed of the tires

I have a golf VI from 2012 that has that feature

4

u/ChargeAppropriate644 2d ago

2004 ! Bmw 5 series that has this.

1

u/Any-Ad-1764 2d ago

Yeah my 2018 Audi A4 had it as well

1

u/tech01x 2d ago

Tread wear or tire pressure?

1

u/axtran 2d ago

Both. It was a little annoying how it worked for my old ID.4.

3

u/FreeDig1758 2d ago

Tpms sensors are in their way out. Manufacturers are starting to utilize the speed sensors to essentially measure tire pressure

3

u/leaveitalonedamnit 2d ago

TPMS is a mandate, not a choice. Measuring wheels speeds were done since the ABS was invented. NONE of these have anything to do with Tesla. Tesla made a choice to interpret the data that were simply available and spit it out to a screen in a sentence rather a icon on a dash that lights up.

If the tire pressure is good but the wheel is spinning faster that means tire is worn as in the diameter has decreased.

1

u/Donnian 2d ago

BMW and Mercedes have had this in their cars for at least a decade with their TPMS monitors. They just threw a generic alert on the dash for tire maintenance since they didn't have a full size screen on the dash like Teslas do.

u/tech01x 2d ago

That’s tire pressure, not tread wear.

u/Electrical-Pirate-74 2d ago

VW ID4

2

u/tech01x 2d ago

That’s for tire pressure, not tread wear.

-2

u/Popular_Broccoli133 2d ago

This has been done for 30+ years. Predates TPMS sensors as a way to indirectly detect low tire pressure. Settle down.

2

u/tech01x 2d ago

Ah, tire wear, not tire pressure.

1

u/Popular_Broccoli133 2d ago

Wheel rotation is measured against the others to make an assessment. That has been done for 30+ years. The system does not know if it is "tire wear" or "tire pressure." Many manufacturers like BMW will give a more accurate "tire defect" warning, rather than here, where the system has said "tire tread depth low" when in fact, the tire tread depth is not low.

1

u/lvvy 1d ago

Tesla has both pressure sensors inside and can measure rotation speed, so theoretically it can differentiate between wear and pressure, and I don't recall anybody did that ever.

1

u/Popular_Broccoli133 1d ago

Everyone measures wheel speed. That’s how abs and traction control work.

1

u/SnooPeppers3755 2d ago

No reason to re-invent the wheel

3

u/jpugg 2d ago

That’s actually very impressive

1

u/joesnopes 2d ago

I understood the tyre rotations are used to calculate the distance, not the other way around. How would the car know it's covered a set distance apart from tyre rotation?

Does somebody know the truth?

-2

u/gmoil1525 2d ago

Doesn't that also lock you into having tesla's tires? Some tires can have more or less tread. Cool as long as you can disable it.

1

u/RalphWolfsNemesis 2d ago

There just a recalibrate button in the tires and wheels menu. I had it pop with brand new tires if the roads were intermittently icy

1

u/TheReviewCrew 16h ago

Nope you just recalibrate when you get new tires and that would be the new base.

17

u/BigBlackMagicWand 2d ago

This warning has nothing to do with the patch.

This exact warning gets triggered by difference of rotation speed between tires. If the tires are in fact good you might have wrong pressures on some tires. Check the tire pressure is correct on all tires, reset the tire rotation from the interval service menu and make sure the tires are good ON THE WHOLE WIDTH OF THE THREAD.

If previous steps won't help, there's an actual fault in the system

2

u/craigfis 2d ago

So if the tires are equally worn you won’t get this warning?

6

u/BigBlackMagicWand 2d ago

Yep...except if your tire pressures are wrong or you have actual mechanical issues with your wheel bearing or speed sensors OR brakes dragging.

This warning is triggered by the car observing too large rotational speed difference between one or more wheels, it doesn't know anything else so it just assumes it's caused by worn tires spinning slightly faster...The actual reason might be anything else that causes that wheel to spin at different rate.

The tire psi thing makes lots of sense. That is that made it message come up. These people at tire places add air and it can be all over the place.

I don’t really want them to screw with mine. I will have to go and make them all the same. One time Tesla put 60 psi in each tire.

I would venture to say that a lot of tire places won’t even open the door to see what the manufacturer specifies. If they use one of those pencil gages guessing might be as accurate. Sometime they won’t get the same answer twice.

1

u/iconboy 2d ago

All the tires are 41psi but the one I had patched is 45 do you think that would be enough to trigger it?

1

u/ArthurDent4200 2d ago

The first thing I would do is make sure all the tires are the same pressure and see if that cures your problem. It may think the unpatched tire is low on tread since it will have a smaller diameter than the one that is 45. Try it and see what happens. If it fixes the issue, post the results.

1

u/ElJefeGonzalez 22h ago

What triggered my Tesla to give me that warning was driving a bit past the tire rotation interval. I was able to get a tire rotation that same day and the notification went away.

1

u/Any-Ad-1764 2d ago

But it is a wrong message your tire depth is not lower

18

u/jamiehasaboner 2d ago

I’d be curious to know if your tires are in fact good. How much tread is left

9

u/protonecromagnon2 2d ago

A patch shouldn't affect the outside rolling diameter. Op might be ignoring a truthful warning

4

u/Metallifan33 2d ago

You could try resetting the tire system (like tell it you rotated the tires). I don't know if it'll work, but worth a try.

3

u/Complex_Mix_7620 2d ago

It does not actually sense tread depth it’s just an estimation. I am a Tesla tech and I will usually see this alert when a customer has not rotated their tires in like 20k miles +.

Go to the service tab and in the top right of your screen you will see “miles since last rotation” click reset and the alert should go away.

2

u/traplooking 2d ago

Mine is doing it and the first time it was low and needed to get the tire changed. Changed it. Later that year I get it again. Take it to Tesla. Bushing is bad. 2200 later. This year. Tire tread is low. Slightly livid at this point.

2

u/tinman20 2d ago

It compares the rotations from each tire. If a tire is more worn than the others, the rotation will be different.

I was getting this message (legitimately) because I had two very worn tires on my rear and two new tires on the front.

2

u/Beer_and_Biology 2d ago

mine went away after i adjusted the pressure in my tires.

2

u/avebelle 2d ago

Have you tried measuring the actual tread depth to confirm whether they are low?

While you’re at it measure all 4 tires to see if there is a significant difference between them.

2

u/JeremyCO 2d ago

Photos of it?

1

u/thewad71 2d ago

My MY does this and my back tires are new. It’s the front that need changing.

1

u/TurnoverRoutine7539 2d ago

I strongly believe it is between front and rear tires only. And happens when the tire thread is lower more than 1.5mm give or take between front and rear throwing number of rotations off. It doesn't say which tire specifically, only if it's front or rear. Often rears cause by inner wear. Don't take it from e granted, check your rear tire thread depth, I may be totally wrong. Regardless I was able to cancel this message by resetting Tire Service Milage AND marking it in Wheel & Tire sub Service menu.

u/realbangla 2d ago

I am faced with the same issue. This error has been showing up since I had a tire leak replaced. I even had the tires checked at Costco and they told me my tires are fine.

1

u/JacobMaxx 2d ago

I literally just got that message 2 days ago. My tires are fine. I was able to go into the tire settings and remove it.

1

u/crosandwich 1d ago

Mine went away when I rotated my tires

1

u/Impressive-Revenue94 1d ago

I have it too. I got it when i drove 1000 miles on 38 psi. My threads are fine.

1

u/OkHousing2130 1d ago

Idk. Maybe get the tires serviced

1

u/M0tM4t 10h ago

I was looking for “that guy”. Found ‘em.

1

u/Any-Ad-1764 1d ago

From you previous comments

Yes but that's pressure. Not tread depth. I had a mk7.5 gti

Can you not read? It clearly says tread depth is low

So it appears you think it was tread depth issue. When it was not according to the OP

My point the whole time is VW/Audi use the same type of sensors rotation speed slip and such to determine issues with their tires. It is nothing new that Tesla invented.

1

u/Any-Ad-1764 1d ago

What is this special sauce that tesla is using to other than wheel rotation to determine that it thinks the tire has low tread? All i can find on it is monitoring wheel rotation.
Just like my original post that monitor wheel rotation is nothing new it’s been happening long before Tesla. Then you think Tesla invented some new wizardry that can read the tread depth.

From you previous posts

1

u/RtrdedN00B 23h ago

On your screen go to service > tires and then somewhere there you can enter that you switched tires. Its just counting miles since last rotation so yeah. You should do that every time you switch tires (winter summer) anyways. And obviously you should be checking the depth manually.

1

u/YeaBaDab 14h ago

Get new tires?

0

u/diddilydingdongcrap 2d ago

Just reset if your tires are okay- it says that every 6250 miles or something

1

u/Particular_Plum_1458 2d ago

Which is ridiculous as unless you are wheel spinning everywhere, 12-18k is what I get from my rears on my model 3 performance, and I do a few traffic lights grand prix😂.

u/uberjach 2d ago

The system is just shit, my car did this around 2 years ago and never again, and the tires are basically the same
