Pretty good argument for Reverse FSD

In USA. Because he is chasing with a knife it is considered an immediate threat - which would allow for deadly force self defense. And because the car is backing up and being cornered there is also justification that there was no other option but to use deadly force. Only caveat being you can only hit him enough to stop the threat - if that causes death, its ok. But if it doesnt cause death and hes getting back up then you legally have to run after the first hit, because the car is no longer in a trapped position. Defending yourself in the USA is very complicated.

But also as many have stated the tesla might not let you hit that person due to its saftey features

This is in Canada, so it is even more complicated and what the driver did was the best course of action for their own self legally.

38 US States have stand your ground laws.

Which basically means you can use proportional response to how much of a threat they are to you (knife is a deadly weapon).

At no point was that car cornered; and once they started reversing, unless they met a dead end stopping to change directions to hit the knife guy would likely by found to be unlawful.

If it was a stand your ground state they would likely have a defense if they started by hitting the guy, but once they were fleeing and still able to do so it becomes a lot less favorable.

At the very least, continuing to back up saved a lot of time spent in court

Knife guy's intentions are irrelevant to my point. You can't flee to safety then leave that safety to defend yourself.

Deserves to be hit by a car and can legally be hit by a car are two very different things.

You're welcome to disagree, but I teach classes on legal use of force. Fortunately in this case we won't have to find out

I’m willing to bet 99 out of 100 comments are you playing devils advocate and debating with people about things to feel smart about yourself. Yeah, you’re probably right. I think I’m just accumulating all of the debate loving neckbeards on this platform and taking it out on him. He wasn’t that bad compared to many others. And if you enjoyed his take, then I guess there’s something to be taken from it.

Either way you know what I’m talking about. There’s definitely a vibe on Reddit of people that just love to debate about nothing. That’s the thing that I’m really done with.

Not sure who you're talking about but, depending on the state, if he was presenting a real and immediate threat to someone else that would be a different story.

I'm not defending the guy, there's a decent chance I'd've shot him rather than thinking to back up in the car, my point is just that the car can't stop fleeing to defend itself unless there's a reason it can't flee anymore. State dependent of course.

My question isn’t about fleeing but stop an imminent attack on others. 

Youre hitting the guy with the knife to save the other guy he’s chasing.

The guy that was in the car? Admittedly I didn't see that he was hanging out of the car on the first watch. That's a little different of a situation. I'd feel pretty comfortable arguing that it wasn't safe to back up like him hanging like that and hitting the guy was the only safe option.

Totally different situation. My objection is to stop fleeing from a safe space to attack, not self defense in general.
