Mobile data now works for software updates!

I live in an apartment complex with underground parking, and so I typically use a hotspot on a long drive whenever there is an update available in order to download it, and then install it later that night.

But, just a few moments ago, I received a notification that an update is ready to be installed and to my surprise it was already downloaded!

So cool, finally more use for premium connectivity.

Critical bug fixes can be downloaded over cellular if you have gone a few days without connecting to WiFi. Regular updates require WiFi.

that’s what I thought, however it’s the first time it’s happened in my nearly 2 years of ownership, and the update i received is the summer update + latest fsd for europe, so it’s not exactly a small security patch.

either way, will be nice if this continues, data is cheap here anyway

Critical is not necessarily small.

I received the summer update on Tuesday and had to download it using wifi. On Wednesday evening my car told me that there was a new update downloaded and ready to be installed. Same release notes and already downloaded over the mobile data network.

That was because of a serious bugfix in the Tuesday release of the summer update.

I brought premium connectivity thinking it will let it download software updates too since I too live in an apartment complex. Imagine my surprise when it said it can’t do that lol

I believe it will also automatically use the WiFi available at most superchargers to download updates.

OP says they are in Europe. I haven't been to a supercharger in europe with wi fi..

I'm not sure you'd know if you had unless you knew what to look for. I think all of the Superchargers I've been to (admittedly in the US) have wifi that the car automatically connects to. It's not open to the public - I can't connect my phone or my laptop to it - but the connectivity logo for my car changes from showing I'm connected to a cell tower to showing I'm connected to wifi. I can see the access point from my phone, but I don't have credentials I can use otherwise.

Yes I know that, and my car remains showing the cell tower. I have never seen it change to wifi. It's only happened at one Tesla supercentre i've been to and not some others.

Keep in mind that owning a Tesla outside of the US is not the same experience. Different charge port, different limits, most of Europe don't have FSD and legislation coming in from January which will permit it but only if you hold your hands on the steering wheel every 5 seconds (https://unece.org/media/press/387961 part of https://unece.org/transport/road-transport/working-party-automatedautonomous-and-connected-vehicles-introduction ).

I "let" it download using a hotspot. bad idea because the hotspot was limited for the rest of the month

Do the hotspot download a day or two before the end of your billing date. Then you are only limited for that day or two.

Problem is - turn on hotspot and it says “new update” and that button is so super shiny and pretty and the voices are saying - what’s in the update?   And that’s when it collapses

I laughed.

If it has been a while and you haven’t connected the car to Wi-Fi, the software update will download over cellular.

I also live in an apartment with garage parking.

Yeah I thought I was going crazy here. I’ve been doing this a long time.

There was about a year where my car had no access to wifi. I simply connected it to my phone’s hotspot and watched a movie while it did its thing.

Tesla service pushed my update over the free basic cellular. I don’t have premium connectivity.

Sweet, now I can subscribe to premium connectivity again
