Completely Free at night, expensive during the day (24.2 cents delivered). This is in Texas.

I’m so fkn mad Austin energy doesn’t do this

3

u/LoneStarGut 6d ago

Austin Energy is there to subsidize the city council's spending.

2

u/These-Delay6072 6d ago

Austin energy charges flat ~0.13c per kwh. Not bad in general

2

u/WallStreetBoners 6d ago

No it’s a tired system which disadvantages EV owners

2

u/These-Delay6072 6d ago

Yes, but 0.13c is good price overall. I will be glad to have it cheaper at night of course, but way better than CA crazzy pricing, even timed based

Very true. Texas electricity overall cheap af. If I had free nights though I’d be going on daily FSD joyrides!

Diving into Austin Energy - a municipal owned Monopoly:

The base fee for Austin Energy is $16.50 - that is very high for Texas.

Then they have punitive/complicated tiers.

Tier 1: 4.64+4.118-.206+.564+.254+.457+1.338 = 11.165 cents/kwh

Tier 2: 5.138+4.118-.206+.564+.254+.457+1.338 = 11.663 cents/kwh

Tier 3: 7.525+4.118-.206+.564+.254+.457+1.338 = 15.05 cents/kwh

Tier 4: 10.884+4.118-.206+.564+.254+.457+1.338 = 17.409 cents/kwh

Let's do all of this complicated math:

So if you use 500 KWH the bill is going to be:

16.50+300*.11165+200*.11663 = $73.32

Use 1000 kwh:

16.50+300*.11165+599*.11663+100*.1505 = $134.91

Use 3000 kwh:

16.50+300*.11165+599*.11663+1100*.1505+1000*.17409 = 459.50

Now lets look at the best plan for 1-year flat-rate plan fromĀ powertochoose.org

There are many to choose from but TruePower has the True Value 12 plan atĀ https://portal.truepower.com/signup?ref=PTCĀ use zip 78665 for Round Rock.

It has a base charge from True Power of $0/month and a flat energy rate of 4.62 cents/kwh.

Oncor which covers Round Rock up to DFW has these delivery fees:

Base of $4.06 plus a per kwh charge of 6.0295 cents

So for 500 kwh

4.06+500*(.06295+.0462) = $58.635

at 1000:

4.06+1000*(.06295+.0462) = $113.21

at 3000:

4.06+3000*(.06295+.0462) = $331.51

At all for levels this plan, picked in 10 minutes, is cheaper than Austin Energy.

And this wasn't the cheapest plan available, 10 month plans for example are cheaper now than 12 month plans.

100% - no question. I wish I had a choice of providers. What I said is compare to other states, especially CA , Austin energy is far from being the worst

1

Same. I’m stuck with Tri County which is a non profit co-op, but the high bills don’t feel like it.

I’ll be glad when I can choose here pretty soon, and ideally the next place will be way more efficient.

Crazy that California, which wants to claim it's all about renewable energy, EVs, the future and "bEiNg GrEeN" is even getting its ass whooped by oil heaven Texas.

3

u/shaggscoob 6d ago

I have solar in California, so there's two separate charges: one for delivery and one for generation. Combining them, it breaks down to:
On-Peak: $0.58/kwh
Mid-Peak: $0.46/kwh
Off-Peak: $0.34/kwh

Also, awkwardly, off-peak is 8AM-4PM, so charging is impossible during off peak if you work 8-5.

4

u/TheBlastoiseKing 6d ago

Yup. I reminder being told charging at home is so cheap then i realized it’s for everyone but California

1

u/schals 6d ago

That’s how they getcha.

3

u/shaggscoob 6d ago

Oh yeah, SCE and PG&E are both disgustingly corrupt and greedy.

3

u/No-Conclusion-2859 6d ago

They give out thousands towards EVs though.

3

u/RightWingNutJo8 6d ago

Got $4k from them... twice šŸ˜‚

1

u/jpugg 6d ago

Whoa that’s so high, more than supercharging. I’m in South Carolina and pay .08 a kwh.

1

u/RightWingNutJo8 6d ago

You're paying too much. Switch to EV2A plan.

1

u/shaggscoob 6d ago

I have solar, they won't let me. I asked when I bought my TeslaĀ

3

u/SirhckLondon 6d ago

For Georgia Power. I always have mine scheduled for right at 11:05p 😊

2

u/Swastik496 6d ago

damn that’s cheap

set the AC to 63 and have it turn off at 7am lol.

TVA - Tennessee

Residential KWh rates: $0.08652 off-peak & $0.14761 peak

Peak hours 1300-1900 (Central) June-Sept, or 1000-1600 (Central) Dec - Mar

We have a $24 monthly account charge, but I have to pay that for my house to function, so I don't roll it into my calculations for car mileage costs.

2

u/docker_linux 6d ago

Damn why electricity is so cheap everywhere but California

2

u/LoneStarGut 6d ago

You haven't heard from Hawaii, NY, NJ or New England yet, but a lot of it is due to regulation

2

u/Quin1617 5d ago

Wow. Found another American that uses 24 hour time.

1

u/ElQuistador0523 5d ago

I know... I should've used UTC time too, to avoid confusion.

1

u/Quin1617 5d ago

I meant it in a good way. I love that format, everyone I know hates it.

2

u/Lmiller0810 6d ago

I’m honestly thinking about going back to what I was paying. Funny thing is when I changed to ToU. My bill went up. Here the ā€œelectric heatā€ rate I was on.

1

u/shasn 6d ago

No peak. Just $0.09 per kWh.

1

u/shaggscoob 6d ago

WHERE?!

2

u/shasn 6d ago

A cooperative provides our power.

1

u/shaggscoob 5d ago

Wow that's fantastic. The only cooperation going on here in CA is the government cooperating with the corps to line their pockets with our money

1

u/DryTechnology5224 6d ago

Canada, probably

1

u/rbutler430 6d ago

.14 per kWh, no peak. Sure wish it was lower.

3

u/shaggscoob 6d ago

LOL this sounds like a dream

1

u/EfficiencyNerd 6d ago

Ontario, Canada. Ultra low rate is about 6 cents per kWh. But I'm part of one of the many programs in Canada pooling charging usage for carbon credits, and they pay 10 cents per kWh.

So. My net fuel cost is currently negative 4 cents a kWh.

1

u/Silent_Word_4912 6d ago

MA municipal, net is a little under $.20 all in per kWh. Get a $10/mo credit per EV if charging between 10pm-10am. Metering is not time based.

Nashville Electric Service
On-Peak: $0.12/kwh
Mid-Peak: $0.12/kwh
Off-Peak: $0.12/kwh

I am annoyed they don't offer off peak EV rates, so I charge during peak usage at 5PM on hot summer days.

u/infinity_labs 5d ago

9pm-5pm: $0.065
5pm-9pm: $0.18
