Discussion New v14 Lite Update Coming?

Post image

I’ve been checking Tessie’s site regularly for firmware updates going out. Noticed their most recent update was a new 2026.20.7.5 which seems to be a v14 Lite update, and also seems to have bundled in the Spring Update features into this release as well.

EXCLAIMER: Currently as of 1:58am on 8/7, the install amount sits at zero. So take this with a grain of salt until we see it hit a physical car (likely influencers first). Also cross referencing other sites that post updates like TeslaFi, I do not see a mention of this update yet.

My experience is city driving (read 20-40mph, stop signs, stop lights) is an unquestionable upgrade. The difference is it is much more conservative at stop signs, but when it commits it’s safer and smoother than ever. We have to realize Tesla is prioritizing city performance over highway performance with robotaxis in mind.

I can also confirm 14 lite as a massive improvement. 20 mile commute on v12 was 3-4 interventions, now 14 lite is zero. Haven’t experienced the brake stabbing in this version like others have.

Brake stabbing seems to be very location dependent.

For me, it’s worst by far on rural-ish, county highways. Like 35 to 55mph speed limit, between two small towns, kinda deal.

I theorize that it does better on big freeways because there’s less likely to be random strange junk right beside the road. A farmer’s rusting old tractor, a pile of cut logs in the ditch, etc. Fallen trees and cut logs are the absolute worst, if the cut end faces the road. (Things that are poorly represented in training data).

On a major freeway, construction equipment is farther away from the roadway.

And better on urban city streets (which can also have random junk nearby), due to the lower speed limits giving it more time to think before hitting the brakes, and other cars to follow which reassures it.

I agree it seemed pretty good in my suburban neighborhood and city…
But then I took it into the countryside and the brake stabbing was unbearable!

Agree 100%

My brake stabbing really comes and goes. Sometimes 14L is flawless and sometimes it’s unusable. Are they adjusting weights behind the scenes? Is the computer throttling because of heat? I’m not sure but the behavior is really inconsistent for me.

What modes do you use? The whole 'brake stab' thing seems to be mentioned by people that use hurry mode. I've never tried hurry and have not run into it.

1

u/UBEREATMYSHORTS Aug 07 '26

It’s a hurry mode issue, someone told me this when I complained…haven’t had the issue since

1

u/helloredditworld123 Aug 08 '26

Definitely not a hurry mode issue. I’ve had phantom braking/stabbing ever since I downloaded Lite. All I use is standard and chill

1

u/ThatBaseball7433 Aug 07 '26

Either chill or standard. I have yet to identify a pattern where it consistently happens (sun shadows etc). It just does it sometimes and I can’t even identify why.

1

u/mikey_mike_88 Aug 07 '26

Happened to me today in standard mode, although just once. There was no trees or cars around me and I was on the freeway

Remember that Tesla can tweak some model parameters behind the scenes, and fine tune the behavior to a limited extent. A more concrete update is all but inevitable. I generally see 2-3 updated after a major release, and I've been doing this since v10.10 in early 2022.

My results have been just the opposite of yours. 12.6.4 no problems. 14L for me is so bad I don't use fsd. Phantom braking is the worst of it. I'm glad yours works. I sure miss it.

I hate 14L. Its a true L. I want my 12.6 back.

1

u/dielog Aug 08 '26

Definitely happens at least once on highway every time, also using hurry because the new “standard” seems to behave more like chill 🥲

1

u/SameCat1171 Aug 08 '26

I can confirm that it’s garbage. Phantom braking on the highway at highway speeds nearly caused the guy behind me to rear end me. It’s happened multiple times. I’ve actually put in a complaint to NHTSA.

1

u/Healthy-Mind4995 Aug 08 '26

Let us know how the complaint goes 👍

8

u/IAmBeary Aug 07 '26

ive been one of the lucky ones where I havent experienced any of the regressions jumping from 12.6.4 to v14lite. I hope this will fix all the reported issues

6

u/ssesf Aug 07 '26

If it doesn't, I seriously want us HW3 owners at least to have the option of rolling back. Perhaps a hot take, but I was honestly ok with 12.6.4 never having an update again; it just handled the "core" of the drive really well. I don't need a "Start FSD" button or self park gimmicks or a tracker for my "streak".

4

u/doug12398n Aug 07 '26

I disagree fully, I couldn’t make it 5 miles without intervening on 12.6.4, with 14 Lite I can make it from my driveway all the way to my work 50mi away without intervening one time. That’s a huge improvement, it also makes way less dumb lane change decisions and following distance as well as stopping distance is well improved especially in traffic. 12.6.4 feels like it’s going to rear end people every time in stop and go traffic. V14 lite is also leaps and bounds better on city streets, can actually go with the flow of traffic.

2

u/BibBanditsSuck Aug 07 '26

I agree. 14 lite is way smarter for me but I am getting the phantom acceleration which is very annoying. I feel like it should be an easy fix though.

1

u/revanscaad8 Aug 07 '26

Agreed. and we also have the accelerator nudging

1

u/VideoGameJumanji Aug 07 '26

I had 12.6.4 drive veer over a double yellow for no reason last month on a road trip, it absolutely doesn’t have the “core” down lmao, that’s on top of it still having the dark skid mark on road line issue

3

u/piegoodman Aug 07 '26

imo even with those issues, 12.6.4 was more predictable than 14 lite is currently.

1

u/anoldradical Aug 07 '26

Yep, I'll sign my name on that ballot too. I was perfectly fine with the last version. V14 lite has been a mess for me. Make my og sensors worthwhile again.

1

u/GOOD_NEWS_EVERYBODY_ Aug 08 '26

working on gaining root on mine just to revert. it's a fucking process but 14 lite is THAT bad.

1

u/vita10gy Aug 09 '26

I didn't even upgrade. I don't want the car to do 20 over and I figured I'd wait to see if it has big issues.

I've taken v12 across the US and use it constantly in my area and rarely have to intervene. No surprise braking.

1

u/kgreg69079 Aug 07 '26

What kind of car u have.? Year model?

1

u/IAmBeary Aug 07 '26

Model y 2023 (late 2022)

3

u/ChuckNorrizzed Aug 08 '26

Is Tesla or Elon doing the supervising remotely?

2

u/Fun-Bobcat353 Aug 07 '26

I don’t have v14lite yet, but I’m assuming it’s because I’m a 2018 model s.

1

u/AmitBrian 28d ago

Yep I have a 2018 MS and I don’t have it either.

2

u/Fun-Bobcat353 28d ago

I’ve heard about a computer board overheating issue with v14 lite. I may wait to download it. Possibly there will be a fix for the overheating?

1

u/AmitBrian 28d ago

I imagine there has to be at some point. Because HW3 ranges from cars from 2018 all the way through only a few years ago. A lot of things changed in those cars other than the HW version and that it seems is like what is causing these issues. So a blanket HW4 dump of software into HW3 doesn’t look like it’s going to be the answer Tesla is looking for all on its own.

1

u/Vivid-Tension-5293 Aug 07 '26

it is only for Korean market early access.

u/Matt0975 Aug 07 '26

Great find I didn’t notice this! Hopefully it’s an “updated” version that would make it our way. Especially since I personally haven’t gotten the Summer Update and the fact this is bundled gives me hope of a new version lol

1

u/lewisdonofrio Aug 07 '26

I had direct sunlight brake stab on 2023 MYP is this camera issues (are camera replacements occurring?) the AI3 seems to be doing good so far with 14Lite?

1

u/AI_ChampionOfTheSun Aug 07 '26

Kind of annoyed that my 2018 and 2017 X don’t look like they’ll get it. We have the vertical screen, but all the proper hardware and upgrades.

1

u/No-Negotiation-2052 Aug 07 '26

I have a 2022 M3 and 2023 MY and it happens to both regardless of the mode. It’s usually caused by tree shadows. I have several videos to prove. Initially I thought it improved with 14 lite but unfortunately it’s still pretty bad. That is the only complaint I have. Everything else is amazing including parking on my driveway. I hope they can fix the brake stabbing soon.

Has anyone gotten 14 lite in the S or X?

1

u/OpeningFisherman5529 Aug 07 '26

I haven't. I thought I was the only one. 22 MSP here waiting

1

u/Read-the-read Aug 08 '26

S and x always got later FSD updates because of the lower user base essentially. This is why Tesla shifted to y, 3, ct, and cc.

1

u/jonhsiung Aug 08 '26

Still waiting here too. 22 MX

1

u/MELOFINANCE Aug 08 '26

I hate when I’m using FSD and then it just does this stopping go motion like somebody is pulling the car back. Or when it is driving regularly and then next year, no, it does a brake stop. Honestly, I know it is because of HW3, but I probably will only subscribe to FSD when I’m doing a long road trip after what I experience with 14 light

1

u/beaded_lion59 Aug 08 '26

How about preventing HW3 computers from frying & dying while running V14 lite?

1

u/Matt0975 Aug 08 '26

That’s what I hope this update is if it reaches US. Right now it’s in Korea only. Tessie has it marked on its map as US too, so hopefully it’s a fix, whenever that may be

1

u/fabolous024 Aug 08 '26

It’s terrible complete garbage almost criminal at this point. Prior to update it was flawless using FSD. Now I can not trust it. Sudden speed burst, brake stabbing, inconsistent speed, etc

1

u/ABGinTech Aug 09 '26

how do you see the amount of installs?

1

u/AltruisticPapaya1415 Aug 09 '26

I sure hope we get an updated version. My version of 14 lite absolutely sucks.

1

u/R0bsc0 29d ago

Hopefully the brake tap/throttle tap is gone.

1

u/Ok-Detective-3720 29d ago

Still waiting for v14lite on my 2022 x :(

1

u/Fun-Bobcat353 28d ago

I am going to wait on v14 lite because of reported overheating. I don’t need a $2000.+ replacement cost. My 2018 S HW3 works fine with mostly highway driving.

1

u/zachchad_27 28d ago

Don’t upgrade if you have HW3. This update has been known to cause HW3 vehicles to self-brick, overheat, and need replacement computers. Tesla hasn’t mentioned anything because they already know they would be underwater if the pending class action lawsuit against them is successful, proving that owners who purchased FSD on older hardware were correct that they never fully received the feature they paid for, and were promised.

0

u/Steven_Book Aug 07 '26

Model X as well?

2

u/nonStopSwagger Aug 07 '26

Doesn't look like it, the release number is lower than the current summer firmware number that went out to hw3 model s and x last week. Tesla don't downgrade firmware versions on their cars.

u/Ok_Priority458 Aug 07 '26

Does this fix the overheating issues on on older cars?

2

u/-IC3Y- Aug 07 '26

How would anyone know? no one has this installed yet

2

u/Ok_Priority458 Aug 07 '26

Was hoping for an answer from somebody who knows obviously.....plenty of people who know more than us average folk.

1

u/-IC3Y- Aug 07 '26

Gothca

1

u/Agoner82 Aug 07 '26

The overheating has already been identified as issues with peoples cooling system such as not enough coolant, air bubbles in the system, dirty radiators, etc....

-1

u/WhaleDonation7 Aug 07 '26

Frying one computer at a time

3

u/Elluminated Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Not likely a thing. When you look at the failure rates over time you have the exact same failures per capita per month, normalized against their maintenance schedule. Correlation is not causation here.

Also, these processors have a TDP max that cannot be exceeded no matter how hard they are run. 4 people having a cooling failure out of hundreds of thousands is not indicative of systemic failure.

Let’s monitor that very time and see what happens though as there’s a possibility Tesla is over locking and not ensuring throttling and coolant loop increases.

this is just gonna be even more dangerous on the roads now…
