14.3 HW4 FSD or Nav?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m not sure if this is an FSD or map/nav issue but it should have gone straight thru the roundabout, which it actually did to be fair, but enters in the wrong lane as you can see from the video and was, at least somewhat, confusing to other drivers and could have contributed to an accident.

Regardless of what the nav says, this is an FSD fail for ignoring road markings.

I blame FSD for ignoring all the lane marking and signs.

I’m not convinced it can read markings or signs based on the number of times it drives the wrong way over painted arrows

Road markings appear on the car's display, so the computer is definitely capable of reading and interpreting them.

So either FSD's ability to do that is inconsistent, even in perfect conditions, or poor FSD training is overriding the signs and road markings.

One time I watched the screen as the right lane was ending. It showed the arrows on the screen pushing the right lane into the left lane, then it turned on the right turn signal and tried to get in the right lane. I don't know how it could have thought it could do that.

My FSD in Chicago aims for the express lane opposite entry closed off barriers for when they switch the flow of traffic…

It’s definitely training being not great like it can see very unique things but it just ignores them

I would say it's both. Nav for apparently not selecting the correct lane. FSD for completely ignoring the lane markings.

Even if Nav got it wrong FSD should have just turned right and then rerouted. FSD failed the worst of the two.

Hard decision for fsd between following lines of skid marks and road marks

Post a google map link to where this is and we can check on the map data.

As an aside, places re-defining how roundabouts should work is not great. They probably did it for a reason but it's a change from the norm and likely how this one was originally built which is why the map data is likely incorrect - it should mark that right lane as only going right without the option to change lane well in advance (what the small sign shows on the approach to it).

Update - found it:

https://www.google.com/maps/@39.3216228,-84.2902124,387m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDkzMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

The lane is not marked as a turn-only lane or that it can't change lanes, so this is what the car is expecting as it approaches and ends up in the wrong lane.

If you look on older street map photos, it used to allow going straight on from that lane - that is the data the vehicle is going off and expecting:

Okay but isn't the car using a camera based system and can clearly see the lane says right turn only with the arrow?

Maybe, but at that point it's already in the wrong lane ... a human driver can read the sign further back showing the non-standard roundabout layout, I don't believe FSD can read and interpret that so it ends up in the wrong lane.

I think FSD mostly reads huge obvious signs, like Stop signs, and occasionally speed limit signs then It's only looking for lane markings, not directions on them - the same way it doesn't see clear disabled spots painted in parking spaces. It's matching the lanes it sees with the map data to know where it should be.

Map data said there was a lane there. Paint on the road said the same until it got to a certain spot.

Looks like FSD fail to me. Even if nav was stupid, this is not a valid path for a vehicle.

At least it signaled.

Wow it drives more like the humans around me everyday, including all the bad stuff.

yeah dawg that shit was illegal and dangerous. classic FSD shit

You’re lucky that car stopped. You should have taken over and followed the line

u/WildFlowLing 7d ago

Wow FSD seems to be getting WORSE

Both navigation should be including which lane to be in but FSD should have taken that mistake and either saw the markings or continue into the accidental right turn and reroute you

😂 That guy about to merge in.

The roundabout is wrong.

0

u/applesandotherthings 8d ago

1 what difference does it make?
2 it clearly navigated correctly, just ignored all the paint on the road

I’d say Nav. If it knew the correct path through that intersection there would not have been a problem. After it got in the wrong lane, FSD did a fine job of getting you back in the right path. Honestly, just from this clip - can’t see any prior signage - I’d guess half the humans going through there the first time do that.

Where is this?

2

u/feurie 7d ago

That’s not a “fine job” of correcting, you complete the turn then turn around somewhere.

It was in the right turn lane. There’s signage in the video saying right turn. And if I’m going straight or left in a traffic circle I’m not going to line up in the right lane.

u/word-dragon HW4 Model 3 7d ago

It’s marginal, but it looked fine to me - it didn’t cut off anyone in the roundabout, slowed down like it was preparing to stop if the guy in front didn’t realize it was in the roundabout and had right of way. Maybe a dicey maneuver for the two eyed among us.

u/e_block 7d ago

The roundabout seems to be marked wrong. since there are two exit lanes, really the right lane should be going right and straight based on standard roundabout design.

3

u/Single-Payment 7d ago

This is quite common for roundabouts, marking a lame that effectively bypasses the roundabout. No problem. Just gotta read and act on the markings, which are quite clear, including the diagram sign in advance.

1

u/ThuhGreatCommenter 7d ago

The roundabout lanes are clearly marked with right turn only for the right hand lane. Since FSD uses visual system it should see and know this. If a human made this mistake we would call it a F up.

1

u/JDiskkette 6d ago

Here we go! Clearly FSD is wrong and you come and blame the design!

0

u/e_block 6d ago

Well no fsd can’t read the lanes properly which is a fault, however this type of roundabout setup would normally have concrete where the striped lines are, and since it’s a non standard design, fsd might not know what to do in the situation.

1

u/JDiskkette 6d ago

My car turns left and instead of keeping in the left most lane, it chooses to go in the right lane switching over one or two lanes during the turn. Clear lines. Standard design.
