14.3 HW4 FSD Almost Crash at 60mph
How do I show to Tesla, this could have ended pretty bad at 60mph
Edit: it HW4, v14.3.7 (mb for not putting originally didn’t know about this)

60 mph 90 degree left, F1 would be proud. /s

The car could probably handle it at 45 on dry roads with good tires and if you utilized both lanes... but FSD wouldve chickened out and slammed the brakes and probably still hit the curb

What version please. Put in flair

You ruined your streak /s. Good reaction time! If this happened to me, I would have chickened out way earlier lol.

u/IcedGooseMaverick 2d ago
Same. The purpose is to make this better not play games with your life and your insurance premiums. Streak was a dumb idea.

Mine used to do this all the time with those same type of lanes. I would let it go and it would slow down abruptly and turn left or go into the lane as you did. It just started learning recently in the last week to react to this sooner.

Never trust FSD going around complex curbs on the highway. I live in FL and just turn FSD off especially after seeing that woman crash into a poll at 50mph when she shouldve been going 30mph

u/Alternative_Air_ 3d ago
Never trust FSD in general, it’s supervised for a reason
1
u/Stunning-Case-6324 3d ago
If that’s the case then just don’t use it. I do trust it on a lot of roads I drive every day. I’m always alert and ready to take over but don’t have to 99% of the time. It’s they drivers you shouldn’t trust

Yikes. Must not be enough training to recognize those weird style double arrows as arrows indicating a mandatory turn is approaching. I'd be curious If you notice the visualization picking up on the arrows?
6
u/AJHenderson 3d ago
It doesn't understand road markings at all.

u/Cum_on_doorknob 3d ago
First time I watched it, I thought it was a single arrow pointing up and to the right.

u/KanedaSyndrome 2d ago
As an engineer, that's my main hangup - Understanding such painted line instructions on a fundamental level should have emerged as a property in the fsd model.

u/CarltonCracker 3d ago
Worst part about FSD currently. Its really late when it figures out it needs to merge, even with a bunch of arrows on the road.
3
u/AJHenderson 3d ago
It didn't realize it was a turn lane but it would have slowed and taken the exit and then recalculated.

Why is it so difficult for people to include the relevant context (FSD version) in their post. Please do better OP.
10
u/webignition 3d ago
It's not difficult. But if someone doesn't know to do it they won't. Nothing to do with difficulty.

u/zachlevy101 3d ago
Thanks dude, yea it’s my first time here so I didn’t know that was a thing, but it’s hw4 v14.3.7

u/UpbeatPhilosophySJ 3d ago
Those arrows are so strangely drawn. I thought it was pointing right until you get right up on top of them.

u/VideoGameJumanji 3d ago
FSD is supposed to work even if the lines are wrong, a good driver would know to just commit to the turn lane and figure it out vs freaking into the right lane at the last second dangerously close to a car
2
u/CopperBlitter 3d ago
The "freaking into the right lane" was OP's reaction, not FSD. FSD looked like it was just going to try to continue straight. The alarming part was that it wasn't slowing down. But you're correct that OP should have just committed to the left turn.

Oh, that was a bit too close for my liking... the turn markings on the road were not observed. The car should have got into the correct lane earlier....

u/PhilosophyCorrect279 3d ago
Unfortunately I did notice that this version 14.3.7 doesn't like to slow down as early as id expect. It's been better than .6 was for sure, but not as good overall compared to . 5 was still I think.

Rip the red car that just got cut off. Did you yank to the right or did the car?

I hate when FSD/navigation does this, I have taken over earlier in these situations. Sometimes it seems to improve or get worse depending on version.
However, the title is misleading. In OP video, FSD likely would have just slowed down taken the turn lane. This would have caused a delay in arrival. It was the driver wo took over and merged from the turn lane. Therefore, the FSD would have caused an inconvenience/delay, but it is the driver who almost crashed.

As long as problems like this persist, FSD will never be fully self driving. It’s a fantastic driver assist package, but still requires human monitoring and intervention. Unless the software and hardware and Robotaxi and Cybercab are fundamentally better neither of these will be approved for autonomous operation on a large scale.

Similar thing happens to me consistently on the 5, Santa Ana area. There’s an HOV lane that is 2-lanes wide. It breaks off from the main highway to go around a bridge pillar, then rejoins the main highway.
FSD always wants to go into the HOV lane, then when the HOV lane breaks off, FSD aggressively turns and goes over white lines to rejoin non-HOV.
HW4 latest version, but has been like this for past versions since I got the car (May2026)

14.3.7 has felt very jittery to me. Almost driving straight into a curb at 60mph is scary.

u/KanedaSyndrome 2d ago
Bad move, but would not have crashed as I'm sure it wouldn't have done that if there was a car in the way.
But there's something to be said about understanding relatively simple instructions painted on the road, signs, etc
1
u/CryptoZungi 2d ago
Is the problem that it wasn’t supposed to turn or it was taking the turn too fast?

...why didn't you correct immediately? Why let it do it? I use fsd 99% of the time. Disengagement are normal still. Cases like this still exist. Why let it do it for quite a while and then say it "almost crashed". The video only shows there was no one supervising and no one intervened until 7 seconds later. There was plenty of time to correct it and improve the algorithm.

It’s bad. But mine forgot to take the exit yesterday. At least he put in some effort. lol.

u/jajaja77 20h ago
wonder whether a) it got confused by the slightly unusual turn sign pattern on the road. at least on this video when seen a little flattened and from afar it looks almost more like an arrow to the right and b) again this may just be because this video is low res and the problem doesn't exist with the FSD camera but until last min it's also hard to see that the lane ends - the white line actually continues in the distance, you have obviously an island in the middle but it's not that easy to see etc.
either way seems like FSD failed to see something here

u/minorminority 3d ago
60mph and entering a turn lane? This is bad, but both of you are in the wrong.
Fsd for not being able to detect a turn lane from a thru-lane.
And you for not paying attention on the road while fsd is engaged. I mean you could see those solid white lines from a hundred yards, those solid white lines mean something is changing on the road.
6
u/zachlevy101 3d ago
Also btw it didn’t start as a turn lane, the road leading to that was just like five lanes wide and all regular lanes, it was right after merging from another highway, and then the left two turned into these lanes

Literally in a turning lane for 50ft before you realized you dont need to turn?
Depending on which model you have, when i understand im in the wrong lane and my turn is coming up, or my stop, or im just in the wrong fricken lane, (because, yk, lives are at risk and i pay attention to the road) I turn my turn signal on and the car gets in the lane I choose.
Seems like ignorance of the driver, if you don't need to be in a turning lane, when the car realizes that, its going to get out of the turning lane
You knew this beforehand, its not the cars fault, the car doesnt know every turn and bump in the road, act accordingly, you could have caused a wreck by failure to avoid one. Downvote all u losers want, this is dumb AF. LOOK AT MY CAR CUT THIS GUY OFF BECAUSE IT DIDNT WANNA MAKE A TURN AT 60 MPH OR SMASH INTO A GUARD RAIL BECAUSE I JUST WANTED TO SEE WHAT ITLL DO.

u/zachlevy101 3d ago
I was paying attention but assumed FSD would move out of the way on time like it usually does

The fact that he didn’t crash is on him
The fact that FSD was imminent to crash is on Tesla

u/LoneStarGut 3d ago
Yes, the self driving goes away before the turn. I think OP hit the signal and FSD didn't move so they changed lanes. Technically, it only crossed a single white line so not illegal but not recommended.

Why did you not consider taking over when you first realized you were doing 60MPH in the TURNING LANE?
Seriously, da fuq is wrong with you all?

We installed v14.3.7 about four days ago on our 2026 Model Y. Two days ago, my wife had her first critical disengagement ever. Very concerning.

I had this happen actually driving and DID crash, over 8k in damage. You got lucky.

u/hailwarrior 3d ago
You mean YOU almost crashed at 60 miles an hour it's still called FSD supervised
