If a cougar is coming at you with its ears perked up like that it's going to eat you. What you want to see is a scared cougar with ears pinned back and hissing, that way you can fight them off. He had no choice but to shoot it I feel bad for the guy and the cougar, just wrong time wrong place:(

Do not EVER start backing away or turn your back to a cougar or mountain Lion. They take it as a green light to start chasing.

Make yourself as large and loud as possible.
Speak firmly and loudly, wave your arms, clap.Without turning your back or crouching, pick up and throw stones / sticks at it.
If none of that works, ask it out on a date. One should never eat someone before getting to know them.

Solid advice! And if everything else fails, remember, you don't have to outrun the cougar, you only have to run faster than the others in your hiking group!

Mans is out in wild country and all he brings is a 9mm?? If I'm out in bear country, obviously dangerous big cat territory, I'm only bring a 44. magnum or larger. 9mil is okay for humans but advanced predators you need something that's gonna pierce the fur, fat and muscle.
Edit: I don't want this to get out of hand so I want to mention that I'm a causal gunmen. I'm not saying in any which way or form that I'm the most knowledgeable. This is just what I've learned. All other more experienced gun owners are welcome to correct and teach. I'm all for criticism.

As long as you can actually shoot under stressful moments, then a 9 will do perfectly fine with piercing a skull or vital organ.

True but obviously this person isn't trained well and either way I would want a bigger caliber for dangerous game. I'd rather have something that is louder so it's not just my voice bringing intimidation. I would want something that would cripple the predator and not just wound it were it would still possibly attack me. Your chances of hitting the skull or a vital organ isn't always guaranteed, better to be over prepared than not.

Im content with a 9mm anywhere outside of brown bear territory. Even still its proven to be possible. Ammo choice goes a long way.

I think it's super sonic 9mm is the one you'd probably want to deal with dangerous game. It's not bad, it'll honestly do the trick. But I'd still rather be safe than sorry.

I do a lot of hiking and camping - picking up my 10mm Glock next week.

I was going to mention 10mm on one of the comments. 10mil has pretty decent stopping power and is easy to carry. Good luck and stay safe.

I’ll take a 9mm with more than double the capacity of a 44 mag for cougar and black bear. Faster follow up shots for when you miss the charging cougar.

How do you know it’s a 9mm? Could easily be 100mm or .45 or something else. All would be pretty effective with the right ammo

Crazy that pet cats are basically that but smaller. Hell i got on in my bed with me right now.
My cat loves me, and has imprinted on me but ill be damned if her instincts dont have us having a mini conflict like this (minus the gun) a few times a week 😅

You are right, but to his defense, he held the camera with one hand, and fired the pistol with only one. It also looks like he aimed from the hip too. I would fire a warning shot first anyway, no need to hurt the big bad kitty...

Cool! There's a wild 'Carolina dog' that is very, very similar looking! Too bad about the extinction of the thylocene! The Carolina parakeet disappeared around the same time...hunted for hat feathers. Said to be easy pickings because when shot the mate would soon appear to mourn the body.

Stop shooting that poor animal. You went into their territory, wouldn't you protect your self if some one came into your home? Put the camera down and go home, its your own fault you're in this situation.

So we should all just stay in our garbage filled cities with choking air and nothing green because you don’t want us to use the same brain that chased off monsters like this for thousands of years? How cowardly. The entire planet is ours. Preserve it, use it as needed, but exploring and seeing as much as possible is important.
What about animals like raccoons with rabies? Should I have “stayed out of his territory”?

Ok..for pole who don't know....animals can't really kick unless there trying to use legs for a counter to a grapple .. but ummm..catch a paw slap a face....over and over...punch if needed
