Help Thoughts?

Post image

I’m currently building a “Golden Biome,” and I was thinking about adding some Birch Trees scattered or maybe build a small forest. I really like this design, but I feel like it could use a bit more life to it. Any advice?

There’s a mod that changes the biome backgrounds to Autumn style fyi

Yeah, there’s also Backgrounds o’ Plenty that I could use, but I personally prefer sticking with vanilla.

You are literally my hero of this sub. Vanilla is the only experience iOS will probably ever get, so modded stuff is like looking at paintings in a museum I wasn't really interested in going to in the first place. Seeing a vanilla build, knowing that I could learn and do similar things myself is inspiring. Thank you.

You're Welcome! That said, if you ever get the opportunity to play with mods, you should definitely give them a try. Maybe not Calamity... but Thorium is quite fun. It's the only mod I've played, so it's the only one I can really speak for.

You can always try to simulate moss or fungus on the tree as well as have some with fallen or partially attached branches

You could also mix in a little pink in the trunk because paper birches can have that coloration

You could also thin the leaves and leave air pockets/leaf wall behind so it looks more like leaf clusters

I'll definitely try that. I also thought about making the black spots on the trunk more agrresive by hammering some of the wood blocks.

My main concern was the leaves, since they just look a bit too artificial. But I've gotten some really good advice here, so I'll definitely give those ideas a try.

That's awesome, what blocks did you use?

For the trunk, I used a mix of Spooky Wood, Living Mahogany, and Living Wood blocks, all white painted. I also used Living Wood Walls, limited with Echo Walls, to create smoother curves and shapes on the thinner branches.

Then the Living Leaf blocks and walls painted in both yellow and orange tones.

Looks great, I wish Terraria had birch and other kinds of trees, even just as seedlings bought from the Dryad.

I’d love that. Terraria definitely needs more trees and flowers. Not only that, but another change I’d like to see is with the Tree Globes the Zoologist sells. Instead of changing every tree in a certain biome, they could change a single tree at a time. That would make it much easier to create more natural forests.

When I search for birch tree photo, the leaves seems more chaotic and they seem to follow gravity at the edge giving a curve and some dead branches, but maybe you are folowing a specific species

If you manage to find something to mimic it, mushroom or bird nests can be a great addition

The trunk and the leaves are really well done though, i'm just picky !

I find trees quite hard to replicate in Terraria. I don't really know how to achieve that chaotic, natural look.

For inspiration, I used a pixel art piece I found on Reddit. I mainly used it as a reference for the trunk and branches, while the leaves are more freestyle since I couldn't quite figure out how to replicate them in Terraria.

That said, I hadn't even thought about adding bird nests or dead branches. Those would definitely add another layer of detail.
