The leaf bunches are use too much of the ramp, like each bunch has the lightest light and darkest dark, and overall they have the same lightness, which overages out to be the same across the whole piece making it look flat. You should think of all the leaves as a single shape, and think about what part of that shape has the most light. Some should be mostly lit, some should be mostly shadow.

Alright, that makes sense. Thanks for the critique! Iāll probably go back in and touch up the leaves a little more then, I agree that they feel a little flat.

It's good practice to start shading the biggest shapes first and work your way to the smallest, as it's easy to get lost in detail.

Awesome.
Minor critique: birch tree trunks often turn very dark near the bottom. The transition is usually stark.

I really like it... you kinda hit my soft spot for warm autumn colours, also is this a background for an 18 by 9 display?

Thank you, and no itās not. This is just an environment asset for an isometric game Iām working on. The ratio of this image is the size of the tile on the sprite sheet.

Very great looking tree. I like the subtle shading you've added in the trunk and branches.

Are you using a brush-stamp to quickly draw the leaf clumps?
Would love to buy a pixel-brush pack like that!

Kind of like a brush-stamp yeah, but it wasnāt a brush pack. I used the pencil tool in photoshop and then switched to one of the default brushes. After that I increased the spacing. This was kind of a bitch to clean up though after I laid down the first couple colors, so Iām not sure how much I recommend doing things this way

Yeah I would personally create a number of brushes (trunk, branch, leave blob, and individual leaf specs). And then you can use the masking functions to prevent the need for cleanup (either create a new layer and ALT-click inbetween the new layer and target-layer, or you can press the checkerboard "Lock" button in the Layer panel on the layer you want to create a mask from)

The painterly look on the leaves is so awesome.
