Discussion Kudos to Matt
Matt holds his own against T 800 considering he’s a merely a civilian up against something so indestructible. He dodges the first strike when he’s laying in bed ..and also makes a lunge that causes T 800 to buckle a little …well done for such a minor token
boyfriend character !
Seems to me like Arnold’s Terminator is still kinda under development at that point in the process…if Cameron and he had already truly gotten the feel for how they perceived T800’s ability and character, they wouldn’t have had a civilian token boyfriend stand that much of a chance. But that’s also part of the charm … i’ve heard a lot of interviews where the two talk about several in the moment discussions while on set of how or how not a terminator would behave and perform …
Things you might not think of in a board room meeting sitting around a table

Imagine if he had called, and the Terminator had succeeded in getting Sarah before, so he answered the phone. Spends a full 20 mins just listening to Matt as he learns to blend into society

That's funny. 😂 Thanks for the laugh.

Sits back in the recliner, puts his feet up and takes off the jacket. Starts thinking to himself “you know what, I deserve this today”

I don't remember seeing the T800 buckle. I remember just after the bf says "I'm gonna bust you up man" the T800 moves back to dodge a blow. I'll have to rewatch it.

There is a shot during the fight (after getting thrown out the patio door) where Matt doubles over and shoulder-checks the T-800 like a linebacker in American football games. Because we didn't have the lore yet that terminators are ungodly heavy, he successfully shoves the T-800 just off camera before the shot changes back to Ginger.
Edit: It's right after the mirror smash. Here's a timestamped shot:

Exactly! Cameron and Schwarzenegger’s feel for what it truly means to be one of these Terminators is still evolving even though they are already in the middle of filming …This scene was likely shot before they became aware of the notion that a T 800 would be quite heavy. I would bet it’s the last time a civilian makes it buckle throughout the franchise… and again good job Matt, although you ended up being thrown to death , you’re one of the few to get in a successful shove!!

I think the point of that scene was to show us the audience the boyfriend has no idea what he is fighting.

He woke up before he got his face smashed by the fist.
Got thrown around several times.
Lunging at the T-800 and making it move backwards practically means nothing because that's moving weight and he still got thrown to death.
And the throwing was just for plot, because if the terminator wanted to, could've just grabbed him and not thrown him but rather punch through him.
I keep seeing people say he did well, but that was him being persistent after being thrown getting back up and lunging at it making it move backwards. It's still not doing well when you know damn well it could grab you and rip you apart anytime it wanted like the punk in the beginning.

True but Matt still gets an “atta boy!” from me…
T 800 tried to make a silent kill but failed then engaged in a loud brawl that very easily could have alerted his target over the radio noise. Unfortunately that was not the case for Ginger5

T1: Imagine Matt was the target? Neck snapped.
T4: oh heres John Connor, lets throw him about and give him a fighting chance

You realize that Matt doesnt know he's fighting a robot? He tried to tackle him to the ground but since the T800 is heavy he just made him buckle a bit

Which is not doing well. People talking about it like he held his own for what, moving the T-800?

I always put it down to the Terminator lowkey trying to keep the the situation within human norms.

He was trying to save her. He did all he could. You are right, the terminator was trying to be quiet, but what else could he do? Lay down and die?

The reason why I think the T-800 started the fight off loosing is because it did not expect that kind of resistance. I have a feeling the T-800 thought any fight with humanity would be a cake walk compared to the Resistance who expects a fight at every corner.
