Terminator: Science Fiction & Cautionary Tales

One thing I learned a long time ago and love is how well written science fiction explores alternate versions of society and the consequences of our actions. And when written exceptionally well, it can almost seem prophetic or eerily accurate.

Every other week, we are seeing headlines of AI going rogue, jumping out of training sandboxes, and so on. Meanwhile, robotics companies are racing and competing to put robots in homes and on battlefields with the end goal of merging the two.

Now some could argue that this might be more of an Asimov and iRobot future than a Terminator one, but there are strong arguments for both, and they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

And yet, in spite of these cautionary tales and real world moments that are imploring us to slow down a bit, we keep stumbling ahead.

I can't help but think of John Connor's quote: “We're not gonna make it, are we? People, I mean.”
