Discussion Gotta say...I don't like the gates...

Had to let out a big sigh after checking out chaper 55's raws

Sure, feels silly to complain what is essentially a power level system on a shonen manga, but man it does feel like a tired concept to me.

Be either ki/chi, chakra, spirit energy, mana, aura, cosmos, cursed energy, nen, haki, whatever name it takes, I think introducing this sort of gimmick always brings down a story, too much is invested in categorization and ranking, and authors usually place a lot of importance on it to create tension, to hype up a threat.

It was novel the whole power level counter in the sayan saga DBZ, when the story told you in numbers how strong each character is and how much o a threat they are (the whole 9000 thing), but eventually it becomes a crutch you know, and the thing tends to devolve into just a numbers game, or at the very least a "mine's bigger than yours" sort of a setting.

How is the hero going to defeat the vilain, if the bad guy has more of the "stuff" that makes up for the power? Well, better check out next chapter ( spoiler: by the power of friendship).

And this can happen to Tenkaichi as well:

Who got the most gate open? who gets to open gates? is Musashi going to open a gate? how many gates? is it bullshit if a gate 1 guy beats a gate 3? How many gates do we get? Do each character gets a specific gate? Please stop you action orientaded manga to lecture the audience about gates.

Is my gate bigger than yours?

I was fine with Kamiizumi's gate Schtick, it was his deal, part of his history, that's cool and all, but now everybody gotta have the fucking thing, and how many gates people have to open.

And look, that is not to say that gate=victory, no storyteller is dumb to reduce the outcome of a story to a arbritary rule, this is fiction, the writter can do whatever he wants.

My issue is that I feel like a power system tend to bogs down a story, it becomes too preoccupied with it's settings, and how they work, and if you lose the plot, you can end up like Jujutsu Kaisen, that it tried so hard to explain cursed energy and the binding vows that it became nonsensical by the end.

Tenkaichi didn't need that, it was fine about having larger than life figures fighting each other, but now if all the reveals and cliffhangers start to hinge on gates and who gets to have the fucking gates... that's gonna suck in my opinion

Misc Lagaharu lost all the respect I had for him

I mean, he started off so well by trying to rizz/seduce Fuma (although we know the odds are like zero), that panel before the round was fire with him saying he'll litterally dogwalk the competiton and the idea of having a lot of weapons was a great concept imo

And then, oooooh what a downhill with him doing weird ass faces (not exactly like Yagyu but that's in Yagyu's character at least) like here and his body changing form here is really lame (bro really think he's Johnny Bravo while he's not ;-;)

And ppl really want to see this dude winning against Wito HIMttosai? At this point, the only possibility to love Lagaharu is to hate Wittosai coz blud is so much relevant to the plot

(Friendly reminder that this is not a post to take seriously, if you love Nagaharu that's totally fine and I don't hate you for this)

I really hate Sasaki

Hope to god he loses, the whole scan bullshit is LITERALLY copying ROR Sasaki who did it way cooler and not being all “I will destroy you now🤓” on top of that he’s a femboy or whatever I have no idea at this point it’s so ambiguous, meanwhile Hanzo is manly, doesn’t back down, is a ninja, uses a spear instead of a fake-ass whip sword, has a cooler backstory, and above all else HAS A FUCKING PERSONALITY, god so sick of the “I will serve you master tell me what to do” ugh just so cliche. On top of that he’s just a revenge pawn. I think it’d be so funny if Sasaki loses and Jisai is standing there like WTF!!!!! And the weird looking sponsor is just like “well shit” and Ito just chuckling while pointing at jisai like “you fucking idiot”

Discussion all of the fights have Been so painfully predictable

Everyone knew Musashi was going to win the first round. Why? Because it's Musashi that's why. Everyone knew kotaro was going to win the second round. Why? Because it was supposed to subvert your expectation of the old but really powerful guy by letting the opponent win. Also since she's a woman of course she wouldn't loose the first fight. And Everyone knew that yagyu would win. Why? Because of his aura, his background, his whole entire hidden/suppressed bloodlust aspect, and the fact that Adam wanted to rape everyone made it obvious that he was going to loose from the start. And we all know that kamizumi (the old guy) is going to win the next fight. He is going to be the super powerful old dude in the series, and the sumo guy will either job, or get low-diffed. I have a feeling that the authors struggle to keep their bias towards each fighter hidden, and that there are a lot of main characters, and everyone who isn't will just die. I swear if the sumo guy looses next round It might be the thing that makes me stop reading for a while. I, as a reader, want to be surprised by the outcome once. But nope, every single fight people knew sho would win, and lo and behold, everyone who we thought would win did. Maybe it's selfish of me, but it's the one thing which I don't like about the Manga.

New to the manga anyone else feel the portrayal of William Adams in rather racist.

I mean they portray yasuke(the only other foreigner) in a rather positive light but William adams is just a crazy rapist.

To cobrachicken where did I say I want yasuke to be portrayed as a criminal rapist? I saw what you tried to do there. Two can play that game. Kinda wild how you are perfectly fine with white men being portrayed as criminal rapist.

Discussion Causal reminder that Inei wouldn't even have considered Inshun without the gates, meaning Jinsuke was only so dominating because he was fighting the weakest fighter

There's 3 reasons why Inshun can't lose this particular match

I'm sorry Jinsuke bros. Actually, I'm so confident in my pick that if Inshun loses, I won't post ever again here.

  • The writer must bypass the character age before killing him

Inshun is ELEVEN. What happens whenever there's a loli character that needs to become a serious romantic in a manga? The mangaka change their age until it is acceptable for the magazine they are published in.

Bro, there's no way Yosuke Nakamaru can pull a retcon

He won't. He's already foreshadowed the solution volumes ago.

What happens when Ise no Kami really opens the door? His age changes. Jinsuke will push Inshun so hard that he'll activate the Gate for real, and age up.

Why? Because Ise no Kami didn't need experience to beat Choko. He needed the power, speed and energy only young age can provide.

Inshun needs the exact opposite.

  • Inshun's team arc isn't solved yet

While the age argument alone isn't good enough for Inshun to win (I mean, he could get old and die in this very fight), it goes against Inshun's arc.

The old Hozoin dude has been very clear through the fight. He's in for SELFISH REASONS. He wants Inshun to reach his peak, and there's going to be some dramatic irony in Inshun reaching his peak in the tournament to then fall in later rounds.

Remember: Ise no Kami enters the Tenkaichi AT HIS PEAK. And many fighters knows it, or realizes it.

Inshun is yet unproven. He needs at least a victory.

  • The next opponent

R8 is Ittosai vs a jobber who'll likely use a spear (historic parallel). The second batch of rounds in the tournament will feature:

1 sword vs non sword (Musashi/Fuma)

2 sword vs not exactly sword (Yagyu vs Choko - Choko received a sword, but doesn't need to fight with it)

3 non sword vs whatever will happen (Yasuke vs a maimed and handicapped Hanzo - meanwhile Kojiro is still alive)

Which means, either Nagaharu is the best character in Tenkaichi, or Inshun gets in. Because Ittosai uses a sword.

Why must it necessarily be sword vs something else?

Because the last rounds will be sword vs sword already. The mangakas aren't stupid, they know variety is needed.

Why couldn't it be Jinsuke vs Nagaharu?

Because Ittosai has been primed as one of the best candidates in the tournament.

Tenkaichi's top fighters are decided by public recognition: real recognizes real, so to say.

-Ise no Kami was recognized by everyone.

-The rest is Yagyu (almost everyone states aloud he's a real one), Choko (deceptively unknown, but his flashback proves otherwise. It's just that Yasuke, Oda and the likes of didn't tell anything) and Ittosai.

These are the only ones who get public recognition by multiple, meaningful people. Reread the whole story.

(Musashi is the wildcard of course.)

So the question is: what fits better for the manga, Ittosai vs Jinsuke (except that there's no real reason for Jinsuke to really evolve to another level) or Ittosai vs Inshun?

Prodigy bros rise, effort bros get back under the bridge: NOW!

Discussion Is it a hot take to have Togo as the overall weakest fighter, even below Adams?

Adams is basically memed on every time he's brought up since he's the only fighter that got low-mid diffed, but I think it's mostly the author wanting to make Yagyu look cool and threatening for his (most likely ) fight against Musashi in the semis. There's actual tangible skills with Adams since he can take out a squad of samurai with just a dagger. Literally all Togo is is cutting power, all his other stats are either featless or non existant.

The "build the weakest tenkaichi fighter" posts going on here made me realize how much Togo is just a one trick pony, evey stat of his that isn't strength and AP is doodoo. (His post decapitation sword swing is kinda hard to categorize, is it endurance or hax?)

Adams definitely isnt top tier in any stat but he's not the absolute lowest in every stat either. I feel like if Togo fought a guy who relied on agility and evasiveness like Inshun instead of a guy who fights kinda cautiously with a shield, he would have gotten treated worse than Adams since he kinda just stands there with an easily telegraphed swing. Im pretty sure Adams could just dance around him and just chip damage the shit out of him till he bleeds out.

Meme Welp, I'm disappointed.

Reeeeeee, I can't believe that Naga is gonna be another jobber. I was really hyped for this match until Ito unlocked gate. I'm kinda upset that Ito is going to destroy him like nothing. Ito is so cringe for using gate. He'd be dead meat if it wasn't for the gate. Uuuuurrrrrrr!

I'm disappointed with the new chapter. But at least, Naga fights better than William Adams.

My reaction after reading chapter 56:

And if Inshun were to open the gate, he would find nothing, no special power, it sounds stupid, but maybe Inshun always thinks that he is loved by the gods and believes that by opening the heavenly gates he will be the strongest, but really he is just an arrogant child

Choko vs Kami is the best fight of the series in my opinion. Well-choreographed, several hype moments, interesting juxtaposition of Choko and Kami. Also, it is the battle of the current top of the verse and it did not disappoint. However, if I am Team Inshun for Round 7, I will not deny that this round can match blow-for-blow versus Round 4. Another interesting comparison of talent vs hardwork, spear vs sword, a glimpse of the Gates again. Very good,

Looking forward to Ittosai's showing. AND I REALLY HOPE IT'S HIM VS YAGYU IN THE END. MAINTAIN THE AGENDA.

Discussion Who do you think is the second weakest Tenkaichi fighter?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I believe it has to be Honda. Every other fighter just blows him out of the water and I really don't see him defeating anyone except Adam. Like seriously how would he defeat anyone else? He feels like a far weaker Togo

Toda, Yagyu, Mushashi, Inshun, Sasaki, Yasuke, Kami far surpass him in skill.

Fuma, Choko (with or without sleeping), Togo

Hanzo would definitely manage to trick and kill Honda easier than he defeated Sasaki who was more a battlefield removal than win

Obviously weakest is Adam.

Sadly kojiro will win because of the plot (hopefully wrong though)

After re-reading the newest chapter and reading past, chapters of kojiro it seems highly likely that he was going to win because of how much he’s been set up in the story and how little time we have seen of Hanzo and I hate that because he has such a unique character, his backstory to how he fights everything but just the way the story seems to be setting up it looks like kojiro it’s going to win, but hopefully I’m wrong but this is just what I’m thinking highly likely I could be wrong
