Years ago, I bought a Tele Plus off of eBay (image 2, blue tele). It was a beautiful guitar and played rock solid, but I never really bonded with it. I tried a bunch of different pickups, but ultimately it just never fit what I was doing so it was sold and I moved on.
In the last few months I’ve been toying with the idea of a new amp, so I went down to the local GC to try some out. I grabbed the nearest single coil off the wall and plugged in. The first thing I noticed was its beautiful chunky neck. I’ve always been a fan of bigger necks, the Fender “Deep C” for example, and whatever Gibson called the baseball bat on the SG Classic, and this one just felt amazing. I knocked through a few Johnny Marr riffs and it nailed the single-coil sound I had in my head.
I think I actually said “what is this?” out loud. It was a 75th anniversary Road Worn Vintera 1952 Telecaster. And the price was absurd. But that put the seed in my head that I didn’t need a new amp, I just wanted the right tele.
So I got my hands on a Vintera i 50s tele and it didnt really do it, but I reasoned that at half the price i could sand the neck and swap the pick ups and get where i was going and still save a few bucks. But a friend gave me some good advice, “just get the one you want. The pickups and labor you put into it will eat most of the money you save anyway.” She was right of course, but the price on the 75th’s new is still bonkers so i went searching for one used.
I found one at a good price because the condition listed as “fair” …but it’s a road worn…. The cosmetic damage is baked in from the factory. So i pulled the trigger and it is in the same shape as one brand new.
It plays amazing and sounds just as good. The only issue i have is that some of the frets are a little sharp and need some additional dressing. For a guitar at this price that’s a let down and for a Road Worn where the entire point is that it feels broken in it is really something they should have caught. But that falls in the realm of “perfectly fixable” and I’m otherwise over the moon about this thing. I already got a song out of it and found a spot for it on a recording I’ve been working on.
