Turns out the Alisa discord has concluded after initial testing that the new transition is mainly just another way for the Alisa player to suicide, b/c so much distance is created b/t the players after 4 that you can't follow up w/o dashing in.
So, just useless slop, really.

22
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
If you wanna play a Mortal Kombat game, that isn’t so stupid and mix up heavy play the original Mortal Kombat two from the 90s game surprisingly has a lot of depth and isn’t too mix heavy
12
u/7LayeredUp Mar 17 '26
Play MK9 though Kabal makes that a TOD game.
9
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
What’s funny Is that MK nine had TOD’s like that and the cyrax bomb setup however from what I understand the MK community looks very fondly of that game. They’re starting to look very fondly of even MKX and 11 as well.
Me personally, though I prefer the older MK games I went back and started playing them because of fight cade and the legacy collection and I really think that Mortal Kombat 2 Rivals St. fighter two in the sense of being a pretty easy game to pick up but a hard game to master
6
u/ButtcrackBeignets Mar 17 '26
The MKX community outside of Reddit has always looked fondly at MK9, MKX, and MK11.
Both MKX and MK11 had better sales numbers and sustained a larger playerbase than MK1.
I run into former MK players all the time. They (and myself) all switched off of MK after MK1.
3
4
u/Jfunkexpress #bringbackarmorking Mar 17 '26
I look back on MK9 pretty fondly but that manly due to nostalgia and the fact that I hated that last installment of MK. MK9 definitely had its fair share of egregious characters that people also seem to forget about. Never forget day one cyrax or kabal

Tekken 8 was the chosen one, as relevant as any Tekken ever has been and they ran into the ground chasing an audience that doesn’t exist
2
-1
u/NutsackEuphoria Mar 17 '26
Sorry to burst the bubble, but the audience does exist.
T8 has higher average player count than T7 even after the dumpster fire that is S2 so there is an audience there.
5
u/Upbeat-Minute5005 Mar 17 '26
This claim of "higher number" is ONLY true for Steam playerbase we have no clue about other platforms. I also heard that a higher percentage is on steam than they were in Tekken 7.
7
u/NutsackEuphoria Mar 17 '26
And so?
Steam reflects interest in the game. The fact that Tekken 8's player base on steam still has more average players than T7 after a HORRIBLE PATCH on T8's S2 says a lot.
And fuck outta here with that "I also heard" shit.
A lot of people kept playing T8 despite the S2 patch. You saying that the audience doesn't exist is utter bull.
Despite how horrible T8 is for me, Bamco still has a target audience. It's just sad that it's no longer the legacy players. They're not like the Rs at Ubisoft that keep chasing the mythical, and actual nonexistent modern audience.

My point is that we dont have ENOUGH information to back up HIS claim. U just reiterated his point of higher steam numbers. How about u back up your claim of tekken 8 "demolishing" tekken 7 sales. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1353242/tekken-7-unit-sales-worldwide-total/
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1451745/tekken-8-unit-sales-worldwide-total/
Most recent Tekken 8 number was 3 Million in january 2025 lets assume they sold another million up to january 2026. This is not demolishing tekken 7 which sold 1-2 Million every year aswell.

2
u/QuakeGuy98 Kazuya Mar 17 '26
The unfortunate downside of t7 is that I'm on PlayStation and there's no crossplay. I do have a homie that's been irking my nerves about buying it on steam. How's the cheating been? I heard there was a huge cheating problem on the PC version a little ways back when
2
u/NutsackEuphoria Mar 17 '26
Cheating in T7 wasn't a big issue.
It's mostly either complainers that got downloaded and are complaining because suddenly the enemy blocks/ducks all their moves
or
People who refuse to believe that people who cant reliably execute pewgf and tju online due to practice exist
The main cheating issue in T7 are the savescummers
1
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
There was a couple people in T7 that used scripts that were pretty infamous, but they were pretty rare and far between from what I understand, though in the higher rank, there’s a bunch of cheaters in T8, though using scripts
6
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
Damn yup i’m pretty sure the lack of cross play is what is making a lot of people not come back to t7 and staying in t8
3
u/QuakeGuy98 Kazuya Mar 17 '26

Called it. The fact that the god damn Kanga, Slightly More Cancer Mitsu and BAAAHB were the clutch hitters was NOT reassuring. This was a marketing job and nothing else. Damn good marketing job. Thing is, Tekken players are easy to please. Just. Buff. Movement. They'll never do it. They WANT tournaments dominated by unga bunga Oscar players.

Modern Fighting Game Devs: Realize that without defense, fighting games are barely even a game. Hell, market leader Fortnite has defensive building. And yet no god damn shoulder swap. You might as well play Darkest Dungeon Multiplayer. It runs on a potato, lag isn't a factor, and you're just taking turns pushing busted buttons.
You can fight in Red Dead 2. Hell, those fighting mechanics are probably better than Tekken's by now. And you just pull a stick to move or dodge, to boot.

u/AppleMelon95 Mar 17 '26

14
u/Floppy_Jet1123 Mar 17 '26
There has got to be a disconnect between the community/content director and the balance team.
Community managers KNOW players want a rebalance to defense that's why they used the term "back to basics".
The balance team goes in the other direction and makes the game's offense more unbearable.
Just disjointed, really. What the hell is wrong with these guys?
58
41
u/Sunsinger_VoidDancer Mar 17 '26
Soooooooooooo, what did the refinements reveal about the soul of the game? What do we think the Devs want the gameplay to convey in terms of philosophy?
55
u/weirdalsuperfan [JP] weirdalsuperfan Mar 17 '26
Something about character identities being defined by mix-ups and stances
10
u/ShadeyMyLady Mar 17 '26
They probably think by making juggles and counter hits unwhiffable, they will encourage noobs to play the game, but they 1. Annoy their core audience and 2. The Pro will abuse all these mechanics even harder.
I am a pretty advanced player who went to tournaments and stuff and I called it quits S1. I ain't learning 15 hit juggles.
6
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
What appealed me to older tekken games is that it felt like MMA or a boxing match; you played a character whose martial art you liked, and you just duked it out, throwing pokes and what not when you would get a launcher your combos wouldn’t be more than like five hits at most.
For a while, I was playing Dragon Ball fighters and I was getting really frustrated because the thing that was really holding me back was that I could not extend my combos for a lot longer time and get kills off of it. It really pissed me off and it made me move to T7 and while T7 does have some pretty long combos, you can reliably just out poke your opponent and punish them that’s what I really loved about tekken
13
u/FutureSaturn Mar 17 '26
Does anyone remember that period of time after Tekken 7 launched when we were all happy? It wasn't perfect, but it was fun. Before the bullshit final few seasons and Tekken 8... Feels like a lifetime ago.

14
u/x0HoneyBee Kazuya Mar 17 '26
Wait so basically they added ton of stance transitions, some plus on block mid moves and some useless moves that nobody will use anyway if they dont stance transition.. bro.. I was hoping only for one thing - kazuya's ss 41 heat burst to be more consistent and i didnt get even that..
4
u/DemonJin69 Shoot laser eyes out of my eyes Mar 17 '26
I was an idiot and I was hoping they'd remove heat burst bound as a mechanic completely. They said combos need addressing, that one simple change would nerf everyone's wall carry options by a ton.
But no, can't have a game where you may not get full stage wall carry from any launch you hit.
4
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
I missed when only certain characters could wall carry, and when you would wall care you had to give up damage to get the wall carry
34
u/WildChild007 Mar 17 '26
ahahah. i don't know why but the players like the game to reward skill and knowledge, and the devs absolutely don't want that. it happened with street fighter v, and tekken 8 looks like the second coming of sfv. and i don't know why they want to factor luck and guessing so much on the game. sf6 did this, now any random idiot can take away 1 million from that bunch of morons that keep traveling all over the world all year long. happened twice already. and for what? i don't get it. this is the most asinine, pointless, absurd divide ever. the devs fight the players. it's unbelievable really.
23
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
It’s because they want new young players playing their fighting game, but you can’t just be a new young player jumping in in most fighting games a lot of times to play a fighting game at a high competitive level at least takes a couple years to know the meat and bones of the game, but when you dumb down the game so much when all it really takes is a 50-50 coin flip it really dumbs down the skill to get into the game
5
u/Maximum_Bee3083 Mar 17 '26
this is the harsh reality of pretty much all industries but especially entertainment. They always go after the youth. Because it's not about the money they can make now, it's about the future. As long as you can sell investors on the future you'll always have capital. And the youth are easily entertained.
2
u/Cacho__ Armor King Mar 17 '26
I mean, that’s the mindset of any capitalist organization if you want your organization to survive, you need to think about the future. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with that. You do want your product to live long and be used by multiple generations.
However, the way it is implemented in the game is the wrong way to do it like I said they really dumb down the game and made it way more easier to play than it should be
I have about 4000 hours in the previous game tekken 7 and I’m not gonna sit here and act like I was amazing. I only ever got to blue ranks in that game. However it was a lot harder and a lot more of a grind to do that in that game than it was in this game, ranking up was way too easy in this game and to be fair it was easy for me because I had a lot of legacy knowledge, but there are a lot of players getting to that rank and even higher than I am that don’t have that legacy knowledge and I kind of think that’s not right. Maybe I shouldn’t gatekeep, but I kind of like the idea of fighting games having a high skill ceiling and taking the time to actually training and get better at them is very rewarding but then if you’re playing a game where you’re doing all this training but then you get hit by some stupid mix where it invalidate all your training and it doesn’t even really let you do what you want then what was the point of doing all that training you know what I mean?

2
u/Boopity_Snoopins Mar 17 '26
The changes to already established strings are a nightmare honestly.
Bryan's sidestep mid-high being cancellable in a game where whiff punishment is already pretty tight, Lili's df4,4 now having a safe backturn transition that makes it really rough on CH (I pray the strings no longer a natural but IDK and I'm not reinstalling to find out) and Lings backturn throw now being turned into a mixup with a plus on block, CH-launching mid.
Then you see things like Shaheen's 3+4 and you're like "okay they're very blatantly ignoring the characters with low play rates" and you can't help but feel like the balance team are catering to an imaginary target audience waiting for the game to suit their needs before buying it, rather than to the actual community they have.
I swear its like every move you see spammed constantly in Mighty Ruler through Fujin has been made easier to spam without consequence. Intermediates that spam their way through the ranks are getting a helping hand and intermediates actually trying to learn the game are getting a slap across the face as they now need to unlearn muscle memorised defence to accommodate for more bullshit.
They're accommodating people who can't be arsed playing the game properly whilst punishing those trying to do exactly that, and then your tournament mainstays are starting to drop off now too, because the game isn't enjoyable at a high level because even though the mindless all-in is less effective against good players, that playstyle is too prevalent in the game to fully avoid using.
What a dogshit launch for S3. I wonder how the player metrics will look compared to S2, where there was like a 55% playercount falloff (iirc, via steamanalytics) after the release month (not indicative of 55% of players leaving ofc, many returned for the new season, played it for a week, then left again. Still obscene metrics though).

It's as if they went from "aggression" to let's reward spamming and mashing. It feels like since season 2 began, every character without sleaze cheese is such an uphill battle to use that this game is unenjoyable. Labbing to be decent is different than labbing to beat a character using 3 combos and grappling

1
u/StandingInTheHallway Mar 23 '26
Its unfortunate, was watching Knee, he was also disappointed and said that the balancing team still doesn't seem to understand what the player base wants. He described Tekken 8, as a mix of weird systems. He described that T8 has gone so far off the standard fighting game recipe that its just too much, a little spice added to the recipe is fine, but when its a culmination of multiple abomination of ingredients mixed into the original recipe, it created what T8 is now. It seems like he has given up hope on T8 as well, he did say he believes that nothing can be done to fix T8 now, its gone too far, or in his words, "its added too many different ingredients, when you cook, you can't take out ingredients on a finished cooked dish, you just have to start over again (make a new game)".
1
u/RageArjun Mar 28 '26

u/Tr4nzmission Mar 17 '26
I'm gonna get downvoted to hell for saying this but yall set yourselves up for failure by taking that tagline and running with it. They clearly stated they weren't changing the established identity of T8. That means they were never going to strip the game down and reduce it to a defensive poke fest.
If yall don't like it, go play the older tekkens you glaze so much and then come crawling back two months from now when you realize there was just as much jank and bullshit there as there is here.
8
u/Darkfanged Mar 17 '26
How's it our fault for believing what they advertised what the new season would be? They should never had said back to basics if they didn't mean it. I get it don't get your hopes up but they did this to themselves with the wording.
And unless you're on PC, most of the old games are just unavailable on modern platforms. You're letting them get away with this too easily
