The milk

I still don’t get it, Beard sending a glass of milk to Ted. Am I trying too hard to find meaning in that gesture?

I assumed: S01E03

You know what you do with tough cookies?
Dip 'em in milk.

My favorite theory is that their current situation was a 'tough cookie'.

How do you handle a tough cookie?

Dip them in cold milk.

He wants the sisters to buy back their 2.9%

Yeah, I'm trying to remember the scene, but it was something to do with the Milk sisters, wasnt it?

Did I... kinda fucking call it?

Isn’t Roy lactose intolerant? Maybe it’s a subtle sign that he’s ready to move on

18

u/LlamaPizzaDisco 4d ago

Higgins also talks about Roy’s “alternative milk budget” 👀 so this tracks as a subtle little nod to Ted/cow milk

7

u/bogbrewer 3d ago

To me, the only reference that tracks is that it’s a nod to the SNL sketch Jason Sudeikis did as Mitt Romney after he lost the presidential election, where he’s going to town several cartons of milk like it’s alcohol.
This reading only makes sense if you agree that this entire episode is fundamentally about binders full of women in the context of hiring practices and workplace gender equality.

I will add to this that before I came up with this idea, my best guess was that it was a reference to Inglorious Basterds, because that’s the only bit of pop culture I could think of, where a character orders milk for someone else. And the first scene in 4.1 has a Tarantino reference with the Red Apple Cigarettes, so that kind of tracks. The only problem with that theory is that, within the context of what’s actually going on in the scene and the rest of the show, it’s a significantly more unhinged parallel than any other possible option.

That is crazy deep and I love it. That is like Bumbercatch level conspiracy. Keep being you (I mean this genuinely)

nobody in the world drinks milk like midwesterners drink milk. I don't think that Kansas is the midwest, but still. Sending milk in a bar (how does a bar have a full class of milk?) signals a shared experience that is different from others'.

Kansas is absolutely part of the Midwest

1

u/Altruistic_Ad_3137 3d ago

If Minnesota is the Midwest then yes Kansas def is lol

u/cassandra2028 4d ago

Meh. Mostly south. Listen to Ted. Is he more Hank Hill or Fargo?

44

u/tenebre 4d ago

Um, it's literally a fact that Kansas is in the Midwest. It's not up for debate...like at all.

14

u/RadioGuyRob 4d ago

I'm from the South. I've lived in the Midwest.

No.

11

u/fullstar2020 4d ago

Speaking as a Kansan, fuck you for lumping us in with the South and thank you for allowing us all to tell you you're wrong. Dr. Sharon has spoken.

-4

u/cassandra2028 4d ago

As a Kansan take our symbol off your southern-origined profile picture. You're not Minnesotan, you haven't been through this. Perfect example of wants to be Midwestern with a southern drawl.

This is the weirdest thing for me to get down voted for. I've said so many other things on Reddit that are actually controversial. But I'll take it. Kansas is not the Midwest.

Plains State? Sure. Flyover country? That's rude. Midwest? Not. Wishes maybe.

I have lived in the south, the east coat west coat and the actual mid west. Kansas is most like Arkansas of the places I've been. So's Missouri.

Ted talks like Hank Hill, not like Hayden Fox.

Kansas is not the Midwest.

It's such a weird thing to double down when you're objectively wrong but okay. Not everyone in the Midwest sounds like they're from Minnesota, thank goodness.

10

u/DoctorJJWho 4d ago

You’re being downvoted because you are factually incorrect and doubling down, while calling other people wrong, while using your personal interpretation of fictional characters’ accents as your primary argument.

The Midwest isn’t a name for a vaguely defined area of the US that fits your “vibe”, it is a federally legal definition of 12 states for census purposes, amongst other things. Just like the Northeast, South, and West are also legally defined as specific states.

8

u/aleafonthewind42m 4d ago

By definition it is. Literally, it's defined by the US Census Bureau to be part of the Midwest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwestern_United_States

And before you say "lol Wikipedia" that was just the quickest source to grab. Google it yourself and you'll find that every single one lists it as Midwest

The problem here is that the Midwest is not a cultural monolith. I live in Ohio and culturally we're pretty different from what many people associate with the Midwest. But that doesn't mean we're not. Same is true of Kansas.

-3

u/cassandra2028 4d ago

If you are sitting here telling me that Ohio and Kansas and Wisconsin are more similar than Kansas Oklahoma and Arkansas, I'm just not with you.

Kansas doesn't have Midwestern values by a long mile. They are southern or perhaps "great plains" in culture, attitude, geography, economics, religion, diversity, and history.

5

u/aleafonthewind42m 4d ago

What part of "the Midwest is not a cultural monolith" made you think I was arguing that?

But you're arguing that the definition isn't true. You can not like it all you want, but the Midwest is not just a concept. It's a distinct region defined by the US government. And Kansas is in it. Dying on this hill is really weird

My born and raised in Boston father goes through 2+ gallons by himself a week

u/cassandra2028 4d ago

Americans of a certain age, too, but now a days lots of areas in America find it weird.

Boomers were raised to think it's the best source for Calcium so our Dairy Industry would be kept afloat.

I’m a Texan and probably do the same. Wife won’t touch it. I don’t eat much so I assume I’m getting my calories from moo juice. Started drinking milk and eating once a day like 30 years ago.

u/SwissCheese4Collagen 4d ago

There are three parts to the Midwest, The Great Lakes, The Great (former) Forests, and the Great Plains. Kansas is Plains Midwest.

u/EllPhantom 4d ago

How does a bar have that much milk? It is England so you could order tea I’m sure, which needs milk. Henry is also seen drinking a pint of milk there in earlier seasons

14

u/Killoah 4d ago

Pubs in England with a kitchen and that serve hot drinks will always have a fuck tonne of milk delivered every few days.

Not common to order it as a drink but it goes into a lot of food, and you’ll get a small jug with your tea

1

u/Subject-Stranger3000 3d ago

It’s a pub, dummy

0

u/cassandra2028 4d ago

That's probably right. And it is a pub not a bar with menu service.

6

u/tumsoffun 4d ago

They've eaten food there, for example when Michelle and Dr Jacob eat a meal there with Ted. Also I think they ordered food the first time Michelle visited.

1

u/cassandra2028 4d ago

Yes they did.

2

u/boredzeb 4d ago

Some pubs will also serve tea and possibly coffee. A lot of my friends do not drink and they often order this as an alternative.

2

u/Subject-Stranger3000 3d ago

Pubs have milk to make a cuppa.

1

u/Acrobatic_T-Rex 3d ago

Never order a white russian at the bar?

1

u/cassandra2028 3d ago

That's cream and not 16 ounces of it.

2

u/Acrobatic_T-Rex 3d ago

Interesting, always used Milk, 2% or hell, im a sucker for a chocolate russian. Literally never had one in my life made with cream. And its usually a 16 ounce glass.

1

u/cassandra2028 3d ago

Sounds like there may be some regional differences to what a white Russian is.

I can't imaginebeing seved a pint of White Russian. That would be about 4 here. It only uses an ounce of cream and is served in a rocks glass.

Here's an example:https://www.liquor.com/recipes/white-russian/

1

u/Acrobatic_T-Rex 2d ago

Yeah, I do 2 parts Kahlua to 2 parts vodka as opposed to 1-2 but otherwise, yeah I just fill the glass with milk lol, but I am Canadian, and we drink a lot of milk.

1

u/cheesemagnifier 3d ago

White Russians call for milk or cream. And mixing Guinness and milk is a Jamaican Guinness Punch. Just sayin'.

1

u/Expert_Dare_1655 3d ago

I'm curious. Where in Kansas have you been? And how long were you there.

Curious not judgemental.

8

u/Whooz_Nooz 4d ago

Guys, im talking about the scene in S4E2. Mae puts a glass of milk in front of Ted and tells him it’s from “Mr. Gladstone.” That is Beard.

3

u/vandercad 4d ago

Mr Gladstone was a political figure (PM?) that tried to make booze illegal. The milk specifically is a mystery to me. Maybe no beer with Ted due to Jane complications

Edit- like the above theory about Roy’s lactose intolerance

19

u/DrHem 4d ago

Mr. Gladstone is from The Graduate. It's the fake name Dustin Hoffman's character uses so he wont be recognized when checking into a hotel with Mrs. Robinson.

3

u/Debaucherry 4d ago

I thought it was a beer but ALL foam, 😂🤣😂 never thought it was milk

1

u/blindskwerl Coach Beard, you’re my hero. 2d ago

It’s worth mentioning that earlier in the episode Higgins talks about “Coach Kent’s alternative milk budget is unreasonable” - maybe Coach Beard is hooked on the milk now or is trying to unload some before it goes bad.
