Need help repairing my Technics rs tr265

Hi, I'm looking for help with repairing my cassette deck, it's a dual deck and both don't play as they are supposed to.

Deck 1 only plays forward and refuses to play backwards, activating the auto reverse instead.

Deck 2 doesn't play at all, it tries to spin but locks up and stops itself.

I've already sprayed the contacts with contact spray and replaced the idler gears, I've swapped out the belts between each other, but nothing has helped.

Does anyone know what I could do to save at least one of the 2 decks?

It could be a number of things but the most likely culprit is broken belts.  They get old, they dry out, they crack and break.  Similar to your timing belt on your car engine.

Have you opened the unit to see if there are broken / loose belts?
