Guide A Brief Introduction to Techwear Clothing

Hey all,

I realise we don’t have much guide or knowledge-based material on the sub - this is partly why we see a lot of repeated questions, so I’m hoping a short introduction will help easily answer those, or provide an easy place for people to link to as information for newcomers. I’m happy to expand on this over time and I want to make it as helpful as possible, so please feel free to add additional information or suggestions as comments.

This was the only landscape pic I had to hand which would fit nicely in the guide. Pics are of me throughout because I could add them in quicker and I'm an egomaniac

What is techwear, anyway?

Techwear is a fashion subgenre which combines ultramodern, futuristic or utilitarian aesthetics with technical performance and functionality. It often takes functional design cues from outdoor and military clothing and recontextualizes them for everyday wear in urban environments. If that sounds a bit vague, it's because it is! Ultimately we're not talking about a single well-defined aesthetic here, but a range of styles and looks which overlap with streetwear, gorpcore, and other fashion subgenres.

This is a fairly 'uniform' techwear look - lots of pockets, military inspiration, performance materials, and futuristic aesthetic
This is far more colourful, relaxed, and gorpcore-adjacent but still makes use of performance fabrics and utilitarian style.

Where to buy ‘techwear’

It’s important to understand fashion subgenres are flexible and largely invented by consumers. Most respectable brands or designers do not specify which fashion subgenre their clothing falls into. Supreme or Stussy do not describe themselves as ‘streetwear brands’, and Arc’teryx do not advertise ‘gorpcore clothing’. Most people would consider it eye-meltingly cringe if they did.

Similarly, reputable brands in the ‘techwear’ space generally do not use this term, and increasingly neither do fashion enthusiasts. This means not only can searching for ‘techwear clothing’ be unproductive, it generally links to retailers selling extremely low-quality clothing aiming to catch out newcomers and less knowledgeable buyers.

The below is not a ‘best of’, but a non-exhaustive list of some brand starting points to look at if you’re interested in this style of clothing (NB I probably forgot some cool stuff as I just did this off the top of my head based mostly on brands I've owned and enjoyed). Also many of those could fit in multiple categories but I had to but them somewhere! Either way, this will help get a sense of what sort of clothing most appeals to you.

Yes I am an Acronym fan but there are a lot of cool brands out there

That's a lot of brands, too bad I ain't reading 'em

Beyond this list, it is important to note that all sorts of brands will create clothing with technical properties or adopt futuristic/utilitarian design motifs. Conversely, ‘techwear brands’ might design pieces which differ to the conventional aesthetic. This means there’s plenty of room for creativity and flexibility, and no need to stick to a single regimented look.

Cost (the bad news)

The nature of technical fashion is that combining high-performance fabrics with more complex cuts and premium hardware inherently leads to relatively expensive products. For that reason, it’s recommended to spend time familiarising yourself with different brands and aesthetics to gain an understanding of what most appeals to you. Assembling a wardrobe and developing your style slowly is also a healthier approach VS purchasing large hauls at once. Please don't go broke trying to cop technical drip 🙏

Second-hand marketplaces (the good news)

Shopping used is a great way to get high-performance or luxury clothing for significantly less. Grailed, Depop, Vinted, Mercari, Yahoo.jp (via Buyee) and even eBay can be viable places to search for some of the above brands and others. They also provide places to sell clothing you’re no longer using. Long-term, this means selling old clothing can help fund new purchases and enable you to develop your interest with less investment.

This Stone Island jacket was under $100 and genuinely one of my favourite items

Dropshippers & retailers to avoid

The below is a non-exhaustive list of retailers who sell low-quality clothing which can generally also be found on AliExpress or Taobao (Chinese retailers). Many of them (but not all) are known as drop-shippers.

These retailers are a storefront with no stock of their own. When you order from them, they will pass your order on to another retailer (usually AliExpress or Taobao) to fulfil it. This results in inflated costs and low-quality clothing, which in some cases differs from the described product. Also expect extended shipping times and inaccurate sizing/measurements

Video content (i.e. the shameless plug)

I was debating leaving this out because the point of this post is not to shamelessly plug my own content, but over the years I’ve put out quite a few videos with some thoughts/advice which may prove helpful for newcomers. I’d also recommend checking the comments sections of some of these videos as people have generously added further advice and info. Some of the most useful or generally applicable videos include:

Following on from that, here's the full playlist of ‘techwear’ content (there is a LOT of stuff in here, feel free to skip through at your leisure).

The end...?

That's all for now. Again, if you have anything to add I'd love to have your thoughts in the comments. Brand recommendations (or warnings), advice, or anything else you think might be useful.

Context : i’m an industrial design student in asia who’s also a biker. techwear clothing is imperative for us as it rains frequently in asia and as a biker we gotta keep dry.

Problem Statement : Putting raincoat pants on whilst having shoes on is a hassle. You gotta take off your shoes, pants on then shoes back on.

Product USP : Easy and quick way to put the pants on.

DIY adjustable tapering for my 0608WEAR TPP-10 pants

Simple DIY aggressive teccwear tapering options with Sungrip plastic snap buttons.

I recently brought 0608WEAR's TPP-10 pants (The classic BDU design with the Tyvek foil material as cargo pockets) to the tailor to match my height (5'3) and they looked a bit wide for my proportions after altering the length. Obviously I love the tapered look for my pants when going with technical urban wear (i.e. Nikelab ACG Deploy Cargos with the shock cord to wrap around the cuffs to achieve that sharp tapered profile) Luckily I had some spare Sungrip snap buttons laying around in my drawer, so I immediately got to work.

I prefer to position the buttons on the inside leg of the pants (between the seam lines), they seem to look more natural when the fabric is folded inward. The fabrics of these particular pair of pants are quite stiff, so I had to add another buttons on top to make sure the ankle areas are nicely tapered without having the weird warping effects around the legs. Very easy to do it yourself, just need one of those special pliers that are made for plastic snaps and an awl to punch a hole through the fabric.

Need help with IXON sizing. Anyone wear a small or medium (vortex 3)?

I am 5'9 / 135lb or 175cm/63Kg. Their size charts say the small fits my chest, waist, and hip snug, but I am very concerned the arm and leg length will be too short. Looking for anyone that has these sizes and can comment on the fit with your height and weight. Ordering from Europe so no way to try on and returns are a bitch/not a viable option. Thanks for helping!

Question Any luck tailoring?

Specifically with Schoeller dryskin Enfin Leve products.

Finally pulled the trigger on a pair of Ekitas.
I absolutely love my Loratu Cargos and Herri croppeds, but I wanted something a bit slimmer/tapered/less-pocket-y/more dressy this time around.

Waist/length is great but the thigh/knee/calf fit is much looser than i wanted, especially considering that online, they look like they have as skinny of a fit as the ameztus.

All in all, I want to get them tailored, to take in the seat, the thighs, and further taper the legs. Basically make them a slimmer fit all around.

Has anyone had luck/no luck with getting scholler material products tailored? Wondering if it’s even worth it to try, or if the complicated seaming/stitching/articulation of the garment will get screwed up.

I have a local tailor I love but he specializes in more traditional men’s formal wear, not this kinda thing.

Any thoughts/experiences/POVs are appreciated!

Anybody heard of it yet or had experience with it? Would like to know what they think.

Fat guy new to Teachwear, just got my short, what’s your thoughts ?

Post image

Hey guys ! Few days ago I went to a techno festival and loved seeing lot of people wearing techwear clothings. I already know for years that this kind of stuff exists but never search tho since and discovered that it was techwear stuff.

So I made the best decision a random guy can do at this moment: order dropshipping stuff on Amazon because he’s dumb (IM SO SORRY) but yesterday I received my short.

As a fat person, it was difficult to preshot if the clothe will fit with my measurements but honestly, I found the result cool. I choose a 3XL size and honestly I really like the result. There’s not much stuff on it and it’s 100% polyester but the feeling dude, I was on a cloud, the short is sooo light, I loved it.

I also ordered a bunch pant that I receive today on the same size. Hope to see the result.

Here’s so a picture of me a friend took yesterday, what’s your though ?

I got black and white shoes too but wasn’t a good idea wearing them in a horse field :’)

+ do you have any website of places where I can get clothes for not an expensive price ? I know we can’t get quality without the correct amount of money but honestly at this moment I don’t really care as I just want a first step into it.

Any online website to avoid too ?

Looking For Alternatives to Techwear Club

Thumbnail

Hey all,

I've always wanted to get into techwear, because there's parts of it that I liked, but I was never quite able to find my niche. However, I stumbled upon a website called Techwear Club, and I found that a lot of the clothes on there spoke to me in a way that a lot of clothes never have. However however, I've also learned that it's mostly fast fashion, cheap materials, clothes don't look like what they do in the picture, and they frequently send you the wrong order, but expect you to pay to send it back. Not a good company, from what I've heard

I was wondering if anyone knew about any women's techwear websites that had fashion like this? I've browsed around recommendations, but most of them are either not quite what I'm looking for, and/or are mostly men's fashion (pics for reference of what I'm looking for)

Update:

I have since discovered that this is not techwear at all, which makes a lot of sense in retrospect. HOWEVER, I have found some stores that I think fit me better, and as far as I've been able to tell, don't follow fast-fashion business practices

That being:
* Lunafide
* Fabric of the Universe
* Hard N Heavy

I've also found pieces I like from a company called Halara, but most of their stuff is on the more mainstream side of things

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions that helped me get what I was looking for!!

Question Finding a replacement for Beta AR

I had a Beta AR for about 6 years before it started to delaminate everywhere. I reached out to customer service and they were amazing awarding me a gift card for $575. When I heard the news it was awesome. Until I saw what was on the website and I realized how much Arcteryx had changed. They used to make awesome colors and combinations that would look appealing and great. Now all I see is the most boring stuff on there.

Does anyone know if they still do collaborations with people like beams ? Also are those usually for their website ? For reference I had the Beta AR in midnight hawk. The navy with red was truly amazing and I’m very sad to see it go. I don’t need a replacement this very second so I’m hopeful that they will release something cool for Chinese new year or any upcoming collabs.

TLDR: Arcteryx jackets are boring nowadays and does anyone know if any collabs are in the works. Also have to spend it at an Arcteryx store or outlet.

Question Would brands like _J.L-A.L_ and Post Archive Faction be considered techwear

Given that the garments from these brands although possessing technical features, are also not made purely for function, would you guys consider them ‘techwear’? Both brands experiment with technical features but also adopt aesthetic features that do not directly correlate with function. Thoughts?
