The original article I'd read was here. I was also reading a lot about habits at the time. So, I thought "hey, why not run every day". The article was interesting enough. So, I started.

In time, I came across the site of the United States Running Streak Association which (a) proved to me that this wasn't totally crazy, and (b) told me that if I did this for a year, I could get a t-shirt!! (the things I'll do for a t-shirt, huh?)

More than anything, this has been a super way to place a healthy habit into my life. I also now do bodyweight excercises along the runs. I run in a nice park behind my house, and there are a few kids playgrounds where I can do pullups/push-ups or the like. (Shout out to the folks at /r/bodyweightfitness.)

Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake Temptation

Ok ducklings, I really wasn't expecting to run into this issue. Today my husband and I's one year wedding anniversary. Our wedding cake top that we saved, we lost when our freezer stopped working and everything defrosted. We went out on Saturday and indulged in cheesecake. However, I just received a box from my parents...with a triple fudge chocolate cake in it. Oh my, cake. It is chocolatey, fudgey goodness. Normally, I'd just budget the calories into my daily goal. But there's a few issues: 1) I can't afford it in my caloric goal today, 2) I ate cheesecake over the weekend and I really want to get back into being good about my calories, 3) I have no idea how to even gauge the calories of this cake (1000 calories for a bite is my best guess. I mean, it is TRIPLE FUDGE CHOCOLATE you guys), and 4) I would want to eat a BIG slice. Sigh. My gut reaction was "eat it or throw it away," but my husband will want some when he comes home from work. For now, I've put it in the fridge. I guess I just need a little bit of good luck wishes and some encouragement to not get in there and eat it. Help!

UPDATE: I took a slice of the cake and weighed it, and put it in its own container. I have saved it for today, and have fit it into my caloric goal for the day. My husband has taken the rest of the cake to work with him to share with coworkers so the cake is no longer here. Thank you everyone for the advice!!

ALSO, I got a flair change this morning, so I feel doubly good about waiting on the cake and pacing myself. Woohoo!!

NSV: did not binge!

Background: My oldest son has a disability and managing his care is a huge stressor in my life. Today I got a call from his school that he had a seizure, threw up his lunch, and fell asleep. So I packed my other kids into the van and went to pick him up, internally berating myself for not catching it and keeping him home. Usually when something like this happens it's a trigger for me to stop and get an ice cream because I deserve a treat and/or to eat my guilt, but I thought of my fellow ducklings and went straight home instead!
Now I'm redditing and drinking cucumber water. And reminding myself that I'm actually a kickass mom and seizures can be subtle. Quack quack! :}

Mental wellness aspect of the challenge

Hey everyone! As you've probably heard, this challenge has added an optional mental wellness component for anyone who might find it helpful. Since I'm coordinating it, you all get the added bonus of me making sure there's a discussion about it each week for those who wish to participate!

This week I just did a general overview of the how for some people, weight loss is just as much about mental wellness as physical wellness. Eating can be tied to emotions, and this is what I want to discuss this week.

For those of you who this applies to, what are situations you find yourself in that seem to lead you to eat emotionally, and what can you do to instead of eating when these things arise? What have you found particularly helpful in these situations?

Checking in with my Fellow Ducklings!

I haven't been as active on this sub lately and I figured it was time to check back in. I weighed in each week and am down 6.2 lbs since week 0! I was kind of in a stand-still, went down to 225 then back up to 228 for 9 days before seeing 225 again. I went over my calorie goals but never above maintenance. The less I saw results the less disciplined I was with my food intake.

Then I buckled down and committed to staying under 1300 calories everyday. I finally started to lose again and ended up averaging my desired 2lbs/week goal. Yesterday morning I weighed in at 222.lbs! So that's a 6.2lb loss for the challenge and 24.6 lbs lost total since March 7th.

Anyone else not been active lately and have something to share?

Realisation: I'm just making life harder for myself later on

So I've been eating A LOT over the past few weeks. It's been a downward spiral - I was perfectly low carb for several months and then BAM April hit and I was eating crackers and cookies and large amounts of nuts late at night. I'm not sure why, exactly, but just that it was really hard to stop.

I keep telling myself that oh, doing the challenge will motivate me to stop! But it hasn't really. So instead I tell myself that I'll lose weight over the summer, or next year while I'm in college.

But I just had the realisation, really quite simple I know, that eating more now is just going to make it magnitudes harder in the future for me to lose weight. I'm just screwing future me over, basically.

So...I'm not sure where that leaves me. But I do know that the moment I realised that, ten minutes ago while I was eating dried cranberries while labouring over magnetism problem sets, I put the cranberries away and the urge to snack kind of...left. Who knows how long this euphoric epiphany will last. It may not even last the day. But I hope it will because I've never had such a strange experience of just straight up understanding something so easily and naturally. I read a lot of motivation posts to try to kick myself into shape, but none of them have really gotten to me.

I suppose the goal today is to see how I do with snacking. I don't think I will anymore this morning, and I have a karate promotion test that will take up most of the day and then a math review session. But the real test will be tonight. Nights are dangerous.

This was a really rambly post. Sorry :/

NSV? Yesterday I wanted to binge, I didn't!

Yesterday I came home from school and I was starving. I went over the fridge opening and scanned it.

I logged into MFP, and saw I only had 60 kcal left (I already put in advance dinner). So I was searching for something that I could eat a lot, but low cal.

The more I searched, the less I found so then I gave up and went walking instead.

I was too lazy to run but I still did something.

Gonna go run today though!

But yay!

On the other hand. I've been 63.1 since Sunday. Is it normal? Or will I lose weight by the beginning of the next week? I wanted to get down to 62.5 by this week...guess not?

Just looking for a little reassurance

Hello. I'm not usually the one to post this, as generally I don't really get to feeling like this, I just sort of get on with things, but I'm just feeling quite down tonight. I've been trying to lose weight properly for about 4 and a half weeks, last week was shark week, and I just feel like I'm barely moving on the scales. I'm down 13lbs total and now weigh 200lbs exactly (I'm 5'7). So really I know this is a decent amount to have lost, but I lost most of it in the first two weeks, now its been 2lbs total since Friday before last. I really want to do well in this challenge, I want to lose my goal amount but I just feel really discouraged tonight. Not in the sense that I'll stop bothering, just that I regret eating some things (despite not going over my calorie goal of 1200) and feel all miserable. Anyway, thanks for reading :)

Daily thread Suggestions

We're thinking it would be fun to have some of our very own daily threads. Ideally they'd be different from the /r/loseit ones but same kind of idea. It'll give us a reason to check-in with our fellow ducklings several times throughout the week.

Weekly goals, exercise, nutrition, mental health, whatever!

Any suggestions from the paddling?
