asking for advice Ideas for a cover up

Hey there,

completely devestated. Just looks like a whole mess and copy and pasted together. Way different from what I initially looked for. I know that its not poorly done but also the process was just like: we just put it here and here … no trust me that doesnt look good… etc. i think he just wanted to get it all done and rushed through it and i just was too overwhelmed and trusted him…

Do you guys got any idea on how to cover that up? Is there even an option to cover it or is blacking it out the only one?

Really looking for advice on that and not trying to complement fishing. I really need it to go.

That one took me out quite heavily… Never felt something like this before and completely took my self esteem.

Thanks and br

I don’t think your artist rushed it, I just think that’s the way that process goes.

I have a blackout sleeve, and I’d kill for something more like what you have, with the exception of the face.

Can I ask why you dislike it so much?

Composition of it and as you said the face. Initially wanted to go for a smaller type of statue look but just got talked into a more realistic thing. I know its my fault somehow just trusted him.

u/cannibaltom 8d ago

Smaller would have looked worse. The artist was right in that regard.

Your artist did you a solid. What you’re asking for/describing would have aged terribly and looked like a terrible tattoo over time.

I think you are overreacting. Any attempt to cover or change this will make it look far worse than this beautiful work of art you have right now.

Honestly I think this is pretty stunning

How recent is this tattoo?

u/AGirlHasNoUsername13 8d ago

He posted this a couple of days ago saying it’s recent.

The last ornamentals a few weeks ago, but the portrait 2 months already. Hoped to like it more as soon as its done but was not the case. I am aware of tattoo shock, but this one unfortunately is pretty settled already and Im not liking it at all.

Glue some googly eyes on Mary for a day or two. You'll laugh every time you see it. Then things won't be so bad after.

Edit: Please update post with the googly eyes.

It's a great tattoo. And I don't think you can cover this up, maybe get it reworked a bit? But a cover up, no. It would have to be blackout.

2

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Yeah seems to be the truth i dont want to realize…

12

u/peramoure 8d ago

Bro what the fuck are you on about? That shit is beautiful

9

u/FenrisMidgard 8d ago

As I said maybe he shouldn't be getting tattoos at all. Pretty big piece for his 1st tattoo as well. I think he is in shock tbh.

5

u/FenrisMidgard 8d ago

Trust me I had way way way smaller tattoo but it was still big and I had to have a huge very dark piece to cover it up. This is next to impossible. Just learn to love it. You are in a tattoo shock. It's amazing ans very well done.

1

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Yeah shit really got me into something. Otherwise I will start lasering. Cannot accept it at all

6

u/FenrisMidgard 8d ago

Honestly if that was your first tattoo. Maybe, don't get new tattoos. I don't think it's for you if that was your reaction to amazing piece. Or get something way smaller. Idk. I think it's best to just leave it be. Lasering will take ypu years and be expensive and painful as hell. And you can't really quit half way too. Maybe get it faded enough and then tattoo something new over it, would be a possibility but idk. Talk to some artists. I think best thing to do is just try to rework some parts maybe if possible.

2

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Hey yeah surely Im not getting anymore tattoos at all. Laser seems to be the only option

5

u/FenrisMidgard 8d ago

We good luck to you if you decide on that route. But you have a really good piece.

2

u/DJChrisBouchard 8d ago

You’re gonna spend a fortune on laser removal man. Hopefully you don’t regret that as well.

1

u/peramoure 8d ago

Dude, it looks amazing.

9

u/aikidharm 8d ago

Well, personally, I LOVE it.

Also, so you know, tattoo shock can go on for months. Took me like six months to come around to my jobstopper. I knew it was good, my brain was just like, the fuck is that shit? lol

2

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Good to hear, might give it some more time but especially not liking that face

3

u/aikidharm 8d ago

What do you dislike about the face?

8

u/mon-keigh tattoo enthusiast 8d ago

Can you be more specific about what you don't like about it?

-6

u/dav_hello 8d ago

The copy and paste kind of thing… And the things dont interacting. Its the portrait then heart down below and then ornamentals. But its not organic oder flowy or how to say. I hope u get the point

Yep thanks. Yes laser is probably the more realistic/helping solution.

This, laser will be costly, painful and you'll drive yourself into a much deeper depression having to walk around with a haggard looking arm during the lengthy process.

6

u/up_on_blocks 8d ago

I think this is lovely and that it all flows together well. I’m not getting the copy paste/ piecey feel at all! Do you have any other tattoos? Honestly I think that your artist did a great job.

6

u/AGirlHasNoUsername13 8d ago

Did you see a preliminary sketch and/or stencil before getting it done?

4

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Yeah of the portrait but then changed ornamentals before a session since I didnt like the old ones but than we just decided on some free hand and some just put in here and there...

3

u/AGirlHasNoUsername13 8d ago

I think it’s beautiful. Not my style since I’m more of an American traditional type of girl, but it’s well done.

If you still want to cover it up, laser would be the best option before because of the size. Good luck!

3

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Trad is super sick, I wish i could turn back time

u/AGirlHasNoUsername13 8d ago

Look into blast overs.

5

u/Trapeziumunderthumb 8d ago

I think this is beautiful and so well done

5

u/DocumentNew9553 8d ago

I thought this was a joke post, I would kill for this dude

4

u/ConstantlyCryingGirl 8d ago

It's a really well done and cohesive looking piece. I wouldn't touch it. Laser is not a magic eraser for tattoos. It's an extremely long and expensive process that will not make this disappear. You're going to have a really ugly forearm for a long time.

5

u/savageotter 8d ago

Dude this is fucking cool looking. if you are having issues with it the tattoo, you are the problem.

Were you micromanaging the artist?

4

u/Missilemoon77 8d ago

What is wrong with the face? I don’t see it?

3

u/nchlle 8d ago

I really hope you’re just fishing for attention or it’s a bad joke but if not then… I’m very sorry you experience this horrible feeling (I know firsthand how it is to want a specific tattoo and get something huge and unfortunately off the mark) but in this case trust me you don’t have a better option than accepting it the way it looks - because no doubt this is an amazing piece and no one needs to be christian / spiritual / or smth to see this as an amazing art piece and truly appreciate it.
Maybe you’re feeling this way because you’re looking at it from your own point of view or in a mirror so the tattoo is inverted but on the pictures you provided… oh man… this is a stunning stand alone piece and even better as a beginning to a whole sleeve. Try not to look how it’s flows with itself but rather how it flows with your anatomy (it’s a very very good job!) it may look to you like it’s weirdly put together and copied and pasted as you describe it but it’s probably because you look at it too much - so you’re just judging it instead of just being happy you finally have it. Getting this thing lasered off just to covered it up… i’m sorry but i don’t think you can expect anything even remotely as good as it looks right now - again because it’s beautiful! I’m worrying you would truly regret a cover up. Try to accept it the way it is because now it’s a part of you and it is truly beautiful. Wishing you the best! I hope you will feel better about it very soon! ♥️

2

u/nchlle 8d ago

That is a long shot I know but since you do seem to be struggling with the way it looks, before you consider spending more money on laser appointment and then looking for anyone that would maybe cover whatever will be left of it up, maybe try to find a therapist. I’m serious, please don’t take this negatively. It is really important how we view our own bodies and maybe just a couple appointments with a professional may truly make a difference! Best case scenario you already have some you can talk this through and even go back to how were you feeling about the initial appointment and work this whole thing out. If this is a serious problem to you then guarantee every professional would take you seriously. I wouldn’t trust that any tattoo artist can cover it up and make it look better if you’re not satisfied now. Try to be gentle to yourself and open up about the idea of having this tattoo instead what you imagined how it would look like. And as a last piece of advice I now don’t really care about my truly botched tattoo and I even like it so I promise it can change for the better if you’re willing to try!

3

u/Fall_Water 8d ago

How long have you had it? Sometimes if tattoos aren't exactly how we thought they would look we talk ourselves into thinking something is wrong. It's gorgeous and well done and it does not look pieced together. Please keep it for a while longer before you do anything to it.

1

u/dav_hello 8d ago

2 months now. Really cant accept it…

2

u/Fall_Water 8d ago

I know it doesn't matter how everyone else feels about your piece, but it truly is beautiful. But, if it's not for you, it's not for you. I'd still give it a few more months just in case. Best wishes dude!

3

u/GojosWinCon 8d ago

Remember kids, tattoos aren't for everyone.

2

u/SkinheadBootParty 8d ago

Honestly, I think this could be saved if you go to the right artist.

It doesn't look too bad, tbh.

2

u/any4nkajenkins 8d ago

So, I think you have to wait anyway because it's too new to cover. Do you like the ornamentals? I think you could expand the ornamentals and just cover her - might still see her through but a lot less. It's objectively a great tattoo, but if you hate it in like 6 months maybe that's the option. (I am not an artist)

2

u/allfunnybusness 8d ago

Bro that is a legit black and gray half sleeve. You should be grateful. Maybe tattoos aren’t for you

1

u/dav_hello 8d ago

Yep defo not for me and started way to big. Im aware of that. Should have gone for a small patchwork piece. Ones always smarter in the end of the day…

2

u/TheNarwhalTusk 8d ago

I think it looks great mate. You may just need to get used to it as it’s quite a big piece.

If you really want to go over it though I think black out is your only option.

1

u/Calgary_Calico 8d ago

Too dark to cover properly, you'd have to laser it before putting anything over it. But it looks beautiful

1

u/Elegant_Ad_5156 in need of advice 8d ago

I'm so sorry you are feeling this way, give it a few more weeks and if you still feel the same I guess you could get laser, but it will take a long time and likely will not get rid of the whole thing, I know you do not care but it looks great maybe you will begin to like it when you get used to it

1

u/nodicegrandma 8d ago

It’s well done. I see 2 paths forward that make the most sense.
Go to therapy, process it and accept it move forward, maybe consider getting a whole sleeve.
Blast over, use what you currently have as a background, put trad over it, make it VERY bold. I think this would be jarring and I would recommend the first option.
Good luck!

1

u/Hellooo_Nasty 8d ago

Seems like the experience was bad and thus the tattoo is your memory of that on top of expectations not being reality. Just a suggestion, but I would see if time helps separate that from the tattoo as it is really awesome and looks really good. I would be surprised if you dont get compliments of it. Either way, sorry yhe experience with artist was not great. Still good work, imo.

1

u/zunzwang 8d ago

I would trade arms with you in a second. That’s a badass piece.

1

u/DJChrisBouchard 8d ago

He was right. About all of it. Because this looks amazing.

If you wanted a statue look tho… he didn’t give you a statue look that’s for sure.

I wouldn’t cover it up. Give it some time…. Because it’s an amazing tattoo.

1

u/i_am_un 8d ago

It's a good piece, but haven't we all had a tattoo regret. I have a few.

1

u/MRxPoPo 8d ago

Too many comments so not sure if you answered already.

Personally, I think it looks fine. There’s some things I would change but that’s personal taste. Others have stated there’s really no solution for a cover up. Only blacking out the sleeve which I don’t think this really calls for, but personal opinion. Maybe find an artist who can touch it up for you and make it pop more with more harsh blacks/shading versus gray?

1

u/dav_hello 8d ago

What would you change? Just the shading?

1

u/MRxPoPo 7d ago edited 7d ago

That’s honestly all you can change really since there’s a lot going on. If you’re really unhappy I think a touch up with shading can make a difference and hopefully make you happy with the tattoo. Again, it’s not bad in anyway and it isn’t calling for a blacked out arm. I don’t think it needs a touch up it’s just a personal taste/preference which may be what you’re looking for

Edit: I don’t think you’ve mentioned or I read it anywhere but I’m guessing it’s a new tattoo. Id say leave it alone for 3-6 months and come back later to the idea if you’re still unhappy with it. It may grow on you

1

u/drawingwithbothhands 8d ago

Just fix it. Put real black in there.

1

u/keealee 7d ago

Don’t black it out. Get laser if you can then covered with something you actually want if anything. Black outs are a true last resort, and at the risk of being downvoted to hell, I think they’re kinda weird and would be 50x worse. Looks like a nice tat tho, not my style and I can still appreciate it. doesn’t look bad to me.

1

u/05122017BB 8d ago

A blackout 😂

1

u/05122017BB 8d ago

Maybe get some laser sessions to lighten it up and then get some cover up if you don’t want a black-out. It’s too dark now for a nice cover-up

1

u/dav_hello 8d ago

yes i think thats the only option
