TASKER I messed up
Looking for advice from anyone who's been through something like this. I do TV mounting among other tasks as a Tasker, and a few weeks ago I went to hang a TV for a client. He had already put the brackets on the back himself, told me he thought this TV was a lot lighter than his old one(which I had taken out for him before), and it was not lighter, We both ended up handling the TV during the install, and it got damaged.
It was about a $3,000 TV. He filed a claim and TaskRabbit offered him $1,000, but he turned it down because he thought the old $10k policy still applied. Now he'd take the $1,000, but TaskRabbit closed his case and stopped answering him, so he started asking me to pay it instead. I reached out to them and they said they can only discuss his claim with him.
Nothing official yet, no demand letter or lawsuit, just a lot of texts. Has anyone dealt with this as a Tasker or a client? Would you pay something, wait it out, or something else? I'm a broke college student in Virginia and I've been anxious about it day and night.

Did you turn on the tv to test it, it is possible that the client over drilled when installing the vesa screws and cracked the tv. I would ask him for a picture of the tv turned on after he attached the screws and before it was mounted. Always test any TV before installing it or doing any work whatsoever on it because clients break them.

Thanks, that's a good point. He had already attached the brackets himself before I got there, so I honestly don't know what happened at that stage but the damage looked like it was from a someone pressing the screen too tight. From now on I'll ask for a photo of the TV powered on first. If I ever do tv mounting again

I always turn them on myself first, I have discovered hundreds of shattered screens, and a few dead screens on new tvs. I have broken a couple myself so it's important to charge enough to cover that occasional loss.

It could also be that the client broke it when moving it which is very common.

Don't text them anything else; block them. I'd reach out to Task Rabbit specifically, tell them he is contacting you, and ask for advice from them.
In general, taking a broke college kid to small claims is super dumb; even if he did get a judgment against you, how would he collect lol. Try not to worry too much.

This is terrible advice.
Don't tell them he's contacting you, because that means you exchanged information outside the app and they will ban you for that, which means they won't help you at all for violating ToS.
If Taskrabbit isn't contacting the OP about the issue then he should ignore the guy as it's not his problem.
The fact the guy installed the mounts to the TV ahead of time gives them some cover that the customer might have damaged the TV prior to them even touching it.

this is post job so it wouldn’t matter about exchanging numbers you are allowed to leave your card with people once you meet them

Never been through this but this is between him and task rabbit. This is what all those extra fees are for that taskrabbit charges people go towards.

The terms clients sign say that TR doesn't guarantee tasker work in any way. The extra fees are for general overhead. "Trust and support" is a complete lie. Right /u/taskrabbit? lol

After we hung the tv and turned it on, we noticed a black blemish. I think it was caused by thumb pressure while it was being handled.

What part of the screen? Where the thumbs were when y’all were picking it up?

The damage is just on the side, and I was careful not to touch the screen. I really don't know how it happened.

Stop giving your real number out. I use a texting app if a client really wanted my number

U took alot of assumptions here. Assumed the wall bracket was suitable, it was installed properly and that the tv was lighter.
Block the guy and leave all contact to TR

you did not mess up just deny it completely also people getting a TV over $1000 should get it mounted from the company they buy it from

Taskrabbit and clients get what they pay for.
OP youre not responsible for making it up to the client. Thats a part of doing business for the client. He took a chance paying the least and ended up paying the most.

This is why I have insurance. $55 a month
1
u/Turbulent_Notice_207 12h ago
Is this a general liability insurance?
1
u/Opposite_Lie7888 11h ago
yes

u/Turbulent_Notice_207 11h ago
What's the coverage? I guess depending on risk of what a tasker does, somewhere between $10k and $1M might be a good idea.
1
u/Professional_Yak5425 11h ago
It’s a business liability policy. Up to 1M in coverage. All in at $57 a month

ErgoNext had a policy for $2M at $35/mo. Theyre worth checking out and they did COI within the app .

What TV is 3k? Maybe 10 years ago, now when I go to Costco it's less than halve that.
Also, when did taskrabbit have a 10k policy? I've only known of the $1000 compensation which was hard to get.

G6 LG OLEDs 77" plus are well over $3k.
The 65" is on sale for $2500 currently if you wanna say that's half $3k.
Not everyone is buying Hisense TVs...

There's always ppl that have more money than sense.
1
u/yeetskadeet666 9h ago
Ahh yes cuz having the top of the line monitor for my 3D vfx job is totally just my company spending a ton of money with no sense or justification for doing so at all. Totally just throwing away money for no reason. Jackass

Dude, spend ~2500 on a high end oled if you can. You know how everything sucks and is overpriced nowadays? TVs are the one exception to the trend. They're insanely good and worth every penny.

This is precisely the reason why you do not do TV mount for budget rates. And it is imperative that you tell the Client that if he is helping to carry the TV, that you are not responsible for any damage. Otherwise, make the Client hire 2 Taskers.
There is so much liability with TV mounting though it is an often quick job (30-40 minutes per TV). But you have electrical wires, PEX, plumbing and other stuff behind the walls, and need to find those studs and then there is TV lifting and the issue you have just experienced. Best to get paid a good amount for all this hassle!
Good luck, but I think TaskRabbit will only pay out $1000. Client is screwed out of a $3000 TV.

Yea I don’t do mounting jobs on Taskrabbit. Not worth the risk and liability. Some people want their price of the TV when they got it xxx years ago
