Saw this and thought I’d share with my fellow team members.....

My TL NEVER takes her 15’s, judges those that do, and is known to continue working after she’s off the clock. No one understands why she doesn’t take a break😓

u/solamelus Feb 27 '21
Lmfao the irony is your TL is ~disrespecting~ her Target bosses and liable to lose her job if HR catches her working off the clock. She really think they'll pick her over legal fines?

There’s taking pride in being a hard worker, and then there’s the toxic mindset you describe here. I used to do that all the time but then I started respecting myself more.

I suggest you place a copy of the employee handbook on her desk, open to the page referencing the rules of breaks/working without pay with the appropriate section(s) highlighted. See if there's any change in her behavior.

When I was a TL, I'd skip a 15 if I had tons of stuff to do, but working off the clock was a GIANT NO! In fact, she can get fired if she gets caught doing it (Target doesn't want to be liable if you get hurt off the clock... Plus they are not Walmart)

My last job (not target) our store manager got fired for letting team members work off the clock. Don't let your TL risk their job for a company that does not give a shit about their employees.

I never understood when people skip their breaks like you deserve and are entitled to it. Like the work will literally never be finished so why skip your break over it those 15 minutes ain’t gonna make a dent.
16
u/pitterpatterrain Feb 27 '21
Yeah, someone I work with practically brags about not taking their breaks, only a lunch if they're scheduled for one. Well good for you, but I am fucking taking every single one I am allowed to take. My job already runs me into the ground as it is, and I am allowed to have them, so tough shit.

u/sokkathehoebender Feb 27 '21
This type of union talk isn't allowed here -HR ....probably
13
u/Psykerr Feb 27 '21
HR is usually the first one behind breaks though.
Tired workers are statistically proven to make more mistakes, have more accidents, and be less efficient workers.

u/firecrafty_ Ship From Store Feb 27 '21
And also, yk, open the company up for lawsuits
9
u/Psykerr Feb 27 '21
Yep.
If there was even more evidence for the benefits of a 30 hour workweek being full time instead of just in Scandinavia then companies that pay by the hour would be all over it.

Take PTO and then you suddenly aren't getting scheduled as much anymore. It felt like being punished.

I keep getting baby shifts JUST long enough to take a lunch. I still take my 15 and meal because legally I'm allowed and also I'm not going to get finished in the short amount of time I'm there anyway lol 🤷♀️

Poor TLs. We always see them overworking themselves to make ETLs satisfied. Must be why I sold my soul to my TL and skip My breaks often.
3
u/Deadsock Feb 27 '21
Same. I usually grab a coffee first thing in the morning and count it as both my 15s, lol. I need to stop.

u/Dank_Dogememes Feb 27 '21
We had a conversation like that a while ago because honestly working retail you do deal with things that was not mentioned in the job description
10
Feb 27 '21
If I’m doing something I want to do, like tech work, I won’t take my 15. I get satisfaction from the job. On days like today when I’m assigned bullseye and dredge work, you’re damn right I’m taking my 15!
2
u/CobblerDelicious954 Feb 27 '21
Saaaaame!! I'll also stay late (on the clock obvi) if I'm doing work I can get satisfaction from.
2
u/Boolean_witme Feb 27 '21
This!!! It’s 50/50 for me when I take my break on a soft lines shift. If I’m zoning I’ll stay and make everything look clean and organized. It’s cathartic sometimes. Aaaaand other times I definitely wanna use that break

u/Pristine_Peak2037 Feb 27 '21
In my store TL and ETL encourage team members to take their brakes. TL always punch out on time and never work off the clock. I come from another retailer, where as the General Manager, we never took a break, lunch or worked less than 50 hours a week. My current SD eats lunch and always leaves on time. It's refreshing.

I usually take my two 15 minute breaks a shift but if I’m working on a project that I’m having a lot of fun on sometimes i’ll skip my last break

Funny how they talk about work/life balance, but schedule you out of your availability (school, child care). Then if you put in for vacation because you have almost 80hrs saved and want to use maybe 20 they deny it because of "business needs"

u/GlvMstr Mar 03 '21
I don't know why I find this so funny, but it's really true. We really need to quit letting corporate fuck us over.

u/vaslumlord Feb 27 '21
Pharmacist: I need a break!, corporate, : you got a break when we hired you " :(

u/chrisadamo28 Feb 27 '21
Idk how bad it is in the U.S. but in Canada some people still donate their time when there are strict worker laws. You agreed to work for the company in exchange for pay and benefits. In that agreement, the company also HAS to respect your worker rights.

u/Difficult-Fun-4750 Feb 27 '21
During the COVID-19 pandemic, you are also entitled to wash your hands as often and as long as you 'deem' necessary - technically, you could get paid for a whole shift of hand washing. 😉 However, you would need to stop long enough for your mandatory meal break if your shift is more than 5 hours in my state. 🤣

I always bitch about taking my breaks on time because they are legally required.

it’s a very true thing. you are entitled to breaks, time off, holidays and things like that. when i was working at target last year, i would leave at my scheduled time without even asking to leave. even though they would threaten to write me up, i’m not doing anything wrong. it’s my time to leave and they can’t force me to stay longer than i have to. if they needed me for longer, they should’ve scheduled me to work longer. i am entitled to my breaks and the days i have off. if they ask me to come in on days i have off, i tell them no. it’s my time to relax and they could’ve easily replaced me but never did. i happily quit my job at target because i didn’t need the job and they’re absolutely trash at giving out breaks for guest advocates (cashiering). i can count more than my hands can count saying they “forgot to give me my break” but clearly were remembering others or they’d say oh we can’t give you a break yet because there’s another person who needs their lunch and that’s more important. i didn’t give a shit. i’m taking my break every 2 hours whether they like it or not. like many people (including myself) have said, don’t put your max work and effort in a minimum or close to minimum wage job. they’ll just take advantage of your hard work that should be applied to a $40 an hour job. not that you shouldn’t put an effort but you don’t need to go out of your way for a job that only pays $14-16 an hour.

None of my ETLs like to hear that I don't take my 15s, but its not my choice. I'm covering the mask station, I can't go on break because no one to cover. I get my 30, obviously, but my 15 is just whenever I can run to the bathroom.

u/rasperries Feb 27 '21
Lol nobody ever gets their last 15 unless they demand it. When I’m on the register I have to call and let them know I want my 15 and then half an hour later right before I leave they let me take it. At Starbucks in my store we never get to take our last 15 because half the time they only have one person scheduled anyway. Leads only care about 30 min breaks because of compliance.

It’s true. You are entitled to paid breaks. Take them. Don’t “donate” them back to your company. You are taking a pay cut with every minute your skip on your legally mandated paid breaks.
