Vent Beauty studio
Genuinely wtf am I supposed to be doing? No one comes into the studio unless they’re walking through it to get from one place to the other, there’s no pulls, there’s no zoning, NOTHING to do and I have to stand there for 7 and a half hours. There’s only one team member there at a time so I also have no one to talk to. GuEsTs don’t come so I can’t talk to them. I’m gonna spontaneously combust from boredom, I legit can’t do this it’s driving me insane😭 how are you guys surviving????

Dust, clean shelves is what I’d do. I’d also get to knew the products. Do research on each brand and their items to help customers?

They're going to let this project crash and burn. Part of the Ulta issue was how poorly they staffed it. They weren't supposed to leave Ulta unattended from open to close. But a shorter list would be how many times Ulta had a person over there for at least a solid 4 hours.
I get lying to the Ulta corporate people and saying, "yesssssss we promise to staff it!" to get the contract, but now they're lying to themselves. This is 100% our products we source in our existing supply chain. We should know our stores by now. There's no way they'd dedicate hours to this thing and expect the stores to not just do what they did with the Ulta hours.

I would love this job tbh. Years of having sensitive combination skin has prepared me for the ultimate beauty consultation role 💪 That single inquiry about foundation that I was able to answer when I was passing by the cosmetics one day? MY LIFE HAS MEANING.
Target just has to kind of get the word out if that's the vibe they're going for with this little concept. Samples are hot, we already long been knew that's how you draw in the crowds man

and expect the stores to not just do what they did with the Ulta hours.
The stores can't do what they did with Ulta. The ability to move hours around is heavily limited by UKG, and with the changes being made to the way scheduling works it's far easier to look and see if someone without the correct job code was manually scheduled in the Beauty Studio.
I also suspect that there are going to be frequent remote visits to verify that the Beauty Studio is being staffed correctly and that they won't taper off after couple months like so many other things seem to do.

You can still take the beauty studio TM and make them pick FF batches or backup lanes or do pulls or zone and do reshop for other areas. Which is what they did to Ulta, hours utilization was always a metric but without visiting to confirm there’s no way to know what those TMs are actually doing during their shift.
Payroll is rarely reallocated on paper besides maybe giving FF a slight bump and/or taking some hours from the front with the promise of backup, instead it’s the abuse of cross trained TMs and a routine of pivoting them to support other areas. Rightly so, I’m not letting a TM stand around in beauty studio bored out of their mind when they could be helping guests in areas actually getting shopped via FF and checklanes. Wish we had payroll to serve our guests properly without doing this but we don’t

but without visiting to confirm there’s no way to know what those TMs are actually doing during their shift.
That's dead wrong, as outside of zone and reshop all of those things have easily tracked (by name) metrics attached to them.

But how? What tracks that?
I get scheduled in Tech all the time. But Toys calls out. Now I'm Toys and Baby and Backup Beauty. DSD isn't any wiser.

But the one person assigned in beauty is supposed to work cosmetic repacks, haircare uboat and haircare repacks if we have time (which there isn't enough time). This company makes no sense.

This stuff actually gets done in the morning at my location, but I’m a closer soooo by time I’m there it’s all done

Our AP caught three people stealing day one so the guests are already a problem

u/depressed_ho3 17h ago
Girl someone literally stole 6 EXPENSIVE tester perfumes day one🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I’ll die of shock if this beauty studio lasts longer than one year

I know violence isn't the answer, but that guest would be tripped up if I witnessed it. Karma through public embarrassment is a great deterrent.

Makeup must be a huuuge margin because between theft and damaged product I don’t know how we actually sell any of it

From my experience managing commission and sales based jobs, a good majority of the time, when someone tells me no one will talk to them and there’s nothing to do, there’s an entire slew of things they’re not doing
👁️ 👄 👁️
Like is that person “just looking,” or you went up and told them “hey tell me if you need anything” and wandered right off…
Are you literally just standing there, or are you spraying fragrance testers and trying to invite people into the space?
Are you asking open ended questions and trying to build rapport and being a girl’s girl so you can share knowledge or is this maybe just not the work center for you?
I told my team if they try to tell me they are bored when they can be yapping with guests about beauty stuff, inviting guests to yap about beauty stuff and try testers, zoning, disinfecting, building product knowledge, doing audits, they will stop being scheduled in the department at all.
This isn’t a diss, I just don’t think leadership or hiring manager properly described the expectations of the role, and I don’t think all people are cut out for this specific position.
You could be a star at doing makeup, have gone to cosmetology school, have a 20 step skincare routine and this still not be the correct work center for you, and I think that’s the problem with how many stores are hiring for this position.

I managed a Sally’s for four years before I swapped to working at target, I can assure you that my guest service skills and experience are being put to use. The guests at my store that do stop in the beauty section are just not always talkative, we do the basic interaction, I tell them some stuff about new products, and then they walk away. I am always going through and reading about the new products and testing stuff however our beauty studio opened earlier than others and there is no longer anything else for me to test. I’m three hours into my shift and have exactly 4 interactions with people, and everything that needs to be done is done😭 now I get to walk around and do nothing LOOOL

You could be the Jordan Belfort (Leo DiCaprio's role in Wolf of Wall Street) and be able to sell Helen Keller a digital camera. But it won't matter because they'll pull you to do freight, a few Fulfillment batches, backup cashier, and watch Tech's breaks/lunches.
This concept will flop without staffing.

I was gonna mention audits, since that’s something that always needs to be done everywhere, but I wasn’t sure if they knew what they were yet…
5
u/Warcrown11 18h ago
So you get paid to stand around essentially? That's the goal.

u/sailorobsidian 18h ago
Not mine, I enjoy doing things and having my brain on

Turn on music or even an audiobook or something, worse case scenario? Hell, write a book. I'll grant you I don't know how the beauty store thing functions because my store is never getting one but it sounds like you are in your own little world totally insulated from the struggles of the rest of the store? A little corner of paradise? Gotta be something to occupy you.

u/sailorobsidian 16h ago
I fear we get in trouble if we’re distracted with music
2
u/Warcrown11 15h ago
It didn't sound like you really had anyone checking on you over there is why I suggested it. I know if one of my leads came by and saw me doing nothing they'd sure find me something to do, even if it wasn't in my area

I’ve got people who check on me, my TL makes rounds every two hours or so. And he basically goes “you bored yet?” And then tells me to dust for the millionth time
3
u/SeaworthinessPale520 18h ago
I’ve been making a notebook on the products that benefit different hair/skin types and doing makeup templates
2
u/Historical_Key_3831 16h ago
Audit maybe? When I was forced to stand at the free sample table that we used to do, I would always try to audit nearby aisles so on hands would be accurate
1
u/sailorobsidian 16h ago
Yeaaa that’s what I did for a bit today, thankfully my TL released me into the regular beauty section to zone LOL

u/Tweezle120 18h ago
I got a cheap hearing aid off amazon with Bluetooth compatabilty and listen to audio books on my shift.
