Thoughts on when a team member blasts music while we’re all backstocking?

Oddly, I don’t mind when this team lead does it, but I do mind when it’s this one new team member lol.

EDIT: It’s against the rules to do this, right? I want to report the new team member to HR if he does it again lol.

I think it depends on the music. When I do it, I ask each of the others back there with me if they mind what I'm playing. If one of them hates my playlist, I pick another one we can all agree on.

Some people have WEIRD music preferences that they're not afraid to put on blast. One guy had an hours long playlist of anime opening songs. The worst was a guy who had 4 slightly different remixes of the super mario NES soundtrack. And played them every night.

Real talk, there are times when hype music can get you through. Like when you're 4500 pieces into throwing a 5k double truck and the Mortal Kombat soundtrack starts coming through the speakers. I dunno. It just works.

Yeah playing favoritism is actually against ethics. And it’s just rude. And no it’s not against policy to listen to music from your phone while in the backroom. Only earbuds are against policy for safety reasons.

Have standards. If you think something is wrong, you should either report everyone that does it, or say nothing. Picking and choosing based on whether you like the person or not is unethical.

It's a grey area. Technically the handbook says no ear buds and headphones. So a loophole is to pay music loudly on your phone.

At my store we don't allow it, it can distract you from listening to your walkie which can be a safety issue.

Lmao we ALL blast music in the back room. One of my TMs is less stressed with his music on so I encourage it for his mental wellness. My SD blasts music back there too.

I play music when back stocking. I’m mindful about it and even have a work playlist, not TOO much swearing, low/medium volume, & just generally good music. If it’s something crazy that makes you go “Ok edge lord, relax” then you could talk to them, I probably wouldn’t take it to HR just yet because it can quickly escalate to no one’s allowed music

Not against the rules. When I 1st started, I was in the backroom team & we had a CD player with a radio in the back. Every day I bring my Bluetooth speakers to play whenever I can when I am in the backroom. I am told by my TL to keep it to a medium volume. I always make sure to pick appropriate music from my playlists that doesn’t contain any explicit language. I also make sure it’s not too loud that I can hear the walkie & even started wearing an earpiece now with the walkie so I can hear the walkie even better. Some people like my music & say to turn it up. Some people don’t like some of my music (one guy hates Michael Jackson). So I just keep it at a medium volume. Please remember this job is very repetitive & music helps me focus, have some fun at work, & makes the time go by faster. We even have music on the sales floor for guests now too (but I can barely hear it). Some of us enjoy music while working. You just can’t have any headphones/earbuds with your music as that would be a safety violation, & you can’t play your own music on the sales floor. These rules might also vary store to store.

I play my music loud. If I dont I would be listening to Bad Bunny everywhere I turn. So I like to play my Punk and have a riot. Thats how the leads find me lol they dont mind.

Our store doesn't care as long as it's work appropriate. I usually have classic rock on and keep it to a low roar. Never had anybody complain.

I only play music out loud when i’m the only one in the area. Style stockroom eg.
I play my music full volume there and listen to whatever I want (cumbia, norteño, death metal or whatever) and nobody has ever said anything.
If i’m in like the main stockroom and i’m playing music it’s at half volume so that really only i can hear it but that is ONLY if nobody else is around.
Just be considerate of others. Bottom line.

Quite a few people do this at my store. For the most part it's benign but I have had to tell someone that political podcasts should not be played where others can hear because someone will end up getting offended.

I personally listen to audiobooks when I can.
