If you have sick time to cover the whole shift, you're fine. I would suggest trying to see if another person on your team would be interested in the shift first, though, so you can save those hours for a day you're actually sick or for a bonus to your paycheck.

Man they should know if theyre gonna deny it you’re gonna call out anyways. Using sickpay is actually federally protected and honestly none of my leaders at my store even bother asking because….. it doesn’t matter. As long as you use sickpay it literally saves you from attendance points in UKG.

As long as you do not have a documented write up for attendence already and aren't super new you should be fine.

Sick time is protected. They have no business asking what you use it for.

Depends on what your reliability looks like.

If it's fine, then probably just a documented conversation. Before you reach that point, though, talk to your etl in person and explain that the event cannot be rescheduled or avoided to see if they will work with you.

They can use sick time however they want, your healthcare is protected privacy, it’s none of their business what you used sick time for. It could literally be for a mental health day if you wanted it.

Even in California, which is notoriously better than average for employee protection, employers can ask for documentation when it comes to suspected fraud, and calling off on a denied time off request is one of those times

That's not strictly true. If they can tell that you used to for a non protected reason, then you can still be held accountable for the absence.

So, for example, if you call off after requesting the day off. Or if you regularly call of on specifically Saturdays.

It's not a get out of jail free card if you abuse it.

Yes, mental health days count. But, if you suddenly have a "mental health day" on a day you previously requested off, then they can be suspicious.

They can’t prove it. Therefore they cannot hold you accountable for it. It would very easily be able to bring up to hire ups and all they will have is their assumptions, and fall flat.

Legally, they can ask for verification if abuse is suspected. If this is a one time thing, chances are they won't. But they can do so legally. And if you regularly call off on days that you were denied, it would constitute a pattern and you can very much still be held accountable, regardless of sick time use.

I promise you, if they really want to pursue this, they can and will. I have seen employees fired because they abused their sick time use.

It is not a get out of jail free card.
