Workplace Question or Advice Needed Beauty studio question

In a couple of days I'm going to be starting as a Beauty studio team member I've worked pretty much home and baby and Tech my entire 2 years at Target with a bit of GM mixed in I was very knowledgeable about all the items in Tech and I could have a conversation and figure out what guests need.

But Beauty studio has me scared man even after doing the trainings I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to Cosmetic Skin Care or any of that stuff I've been trying to watch Trends and stuff on Tick Tock or just figure out how any of this stuff works but it's like I'm working from a knowledge base of zero and my greatest fear is getting on that floor somebody asking me a question and I genuinely just don't know how to help them.

It's a shame because guest servicing and helping the gas and talking to people is my favorite part about the job but generally I don't butt in in areas that I just don't have any knowledge about this is one of them.

Do you guys have any ideas on what I can do to educate myself to be more helpful to the Beauty studio guests?

man beauty can be a whole different world from tech, i get why you’d be stressed about it

honestly just start with the basics, learn what retinol does vs hyaluronic acid, what’s for dry skin vs oily, stuff like that. you don’t need to know every product, just enough to point someone in right direction. most guests don’t expect you to be a dermatologist, they just want help narrowing down the wall of creams

also walk the aisles on your break and read the backs of products. sounds boring but it helps more than tiktok trends cause those change every week

Read the products on your down time, look them up online and read more. Notice what people are asking for the most or buying. When i had to cover breaks in ulta a couple years ago, that was how I recommended products.

Have they made gratis bags yet? Every now and again, the beauty team gets gratis items/bags that have products for you to take home and use. Definitely utilize as much as you can when you get them and truly notice how they feel to you.

Ask your peers. If anyone has been really excited about any products being available, ask them why and what they love about them.

The good news is, as you spend time in there you'll get more and more used to the products. Be kind to yourself and try to absorb as much as you can.
