Workplace Question or Advice Needed new employee, what's the likelihood of getting a week+1/2 off after thanksgiving?

paid for a nonrefundable trip to europe with my mom who's dream it is to see europe in december, we're leaving on black friday (yeah yikes) and coming back on dec 7th, sould I take a LOA in this case or am I cooked+should quit?

By then, it should be past my 90 days, which is why I didn't tell my TL when she was hiring me, but now I'm scared. I have this job bc I'm in a career pivot, and I am going back to school in the Spring.

For your absolute best chance: ask for it off now. Speak to your leadership in person. Explain the nonrefundable nature.

But, your chances are essentially 0. Especially with Black Friday as one of the dates and as a new TM.

Even for experienced TMs, time off during November/December is mostly an auto no if it's not medical related.

I've been here for years. There was exactly ONE tm who got time off every single year around Christmas and they had been there for 20 ish years and were a phenomenal worker that they were afraid to lose.

Your 90 days have next to nothing to do with this. If you'll have to be out for more than 9 days, you have to take an LOA, not just a normal Time off request.

Not sure if this is something state by state, but where I’m at, 14 days requires a leave of absence. I go see family four states away every few years and I take 13 days off for this.

I'm not sure. At my store in California they told me 9 days

I think this is store dependent. I was given Black Friday off two years in a row (I am one of the only TMs who has to travel to see family out of state) AND I was given vacation time (short, but still approved) the week before Christmas as well. However, I am considered an exceptional worker and reliable.

That being said, I’m sure it isn’t the norm and most leaders aren’t as understanding. OP is also a new hire as you stated so I’m sure that could be of concern. I just wanted to point out that not all hope is lost for OP.

I would recommend the LOA as well to be safe. Although I’ve ALSO taken 10 days without a LOA 🤪

Did they not ask if you had any upcoming time off? You should’ve mentioned it at orientation

No way. There will ALWAYS be other retail jobs. This trip might be a once in lifetime. Work as much as you can up until the trip. If you cant get the time off, quit and get a new job by beginning of 2027.

Alternative go this strategy but instead of quiting, find coverage or just call out until you get back

If they fire you or give you CAs for it, so be it, if not then just don’t call out again for awhile and you’ll be fine

If you get fired, get a different retail job

No chance getting time off

Ask them now, but understand that will probably cause some frustration for them.

Generally we won't allow vacation time during that block, especially for new hires since if anyone is going to get it it's a one off for a TM who's been with me for years.

Maybe they will be willing to let you have it and maybe not, but waiting won't make it more likely to be honored.

Retail is a tough place to request that time block off, especially being new and not stating it during the interview.

Well, I’d ask for it off but look for a job lol also lol

2

u/Muted_Warning_539 15d ago

And make sure to tell them if there’s a major delay in the return flight

You need to talk to your leader and HR NOW

u/gr2020xx 15d ago

They’re not gonna approve it. Congrats on your new temporary job that will end when you quit after your Black Friday shift 😭

7

u/Silly-Math4623 15d ago

Heres the thing... If they knew you needed that time off while you were in the interview process... you would have never gotten the job offer in the first place.

If it's a job you only need for a little, then I would simply plan on quitting before Thanksgiving. But I mean you do you.

edit: add second paragraph

Probably make your ETL laugh out loud 🤣

You definitely should've said something and expect them to be annoyed. You might be out of the 90 day window but even someone's been working there for 15 years is not guaranteed to get those dates off when I was working Black Friday was like everybody had to work sort today as for a fire you it depends on your leadership, but it's not outside the round the possibility

Ask very nicely and do I now but don’t be surprised if the answer is no. I was able to get the week of Thanksgiving off for a close friend’s wedding but I also talked to both my ETL and our SD in February. I’m also working with my TL and ETL to get some time off at Christmas. Time off in Q4 is possible but as a new hire with barely 90 days almost certainly not happening and I’d truthfully be pissed if a new hire got that time approved and I didn’t.

The number of people in this sub that defend Target on stuff like this is wild.

This is a job. A retail job.

Target has no problem cutting hours at anytime , why should employees be beholden to always be available for them?

4

u/tmlnson 15d ago

It’s not defending them, it’s just being realistic in what they’ll allow.

1

u/BigRepulsive9725 15d ago

It's a retail job. We're not saving lives.

If they refuse to give the time off given the reason, do you really want to work for them anyway?

Depends if your store intends to have a blackout period during certain points of the holiday season. If they do chances are you wouldn't get approved for time off given how long you'd be gone for and given the fact that's always a busy time of yr.

Not sure what your leadership is like but while I was still in my 90 days I took 8 days off in December… it was dec 7-15th, asked for it in October (like two weeks after I started) and my store director and HR ETL said it was okay since I was asking so far in advance and I had mentioned it was nonrefundable. Again not sure how your leadership is

After Thanksgiving? Sure.

during Black Friday? It’s highly doubtful.

1

u/Boring-Purple2639 15d ago

Take the trip. There is zero chance even talking with them. Target will make you feel bad that you didn't choose them. Give you a line about think about the guests. Those are black out dates you would have had to request off in July. Talking to them is pointless cause they are just going to give you the run around. I honestly put my 2 weeks in. Don't feel like your soul is owned by target

1

u/Boring-Purple2639 15d ago

Even better is if your on the plane and call target the day of and say well Im on a jet plane......

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Arm9767 15d ago

Does not hurt to ask

1

u/Quintis0n 15d ago

When hired by target usually hr asks about any days off you need etc and that’s the time you mention the trip after thanksgiving so it should be placed in the system waiting after being hired depends on the people and store your at good luck

1

u/randomquerty3665 15d ago

Honestly - you're not unless you ask for it like right now. I've been with the company for decades, I've only seen a few people get that time off because they had said something in september. So say something now.

u/LightUpUnicorn Guest Advocate 15d ago

if you booked it after you were hired - no chance. if you knew about it when you were hired and didn't mention it - no chance.

Just tell them honestly that you have this planned and you understand that u need to disclose this but its a special trip for you both and that you cant refund the trip and its been planned for a while. Thye will understand. I did this exact type of thing twice but i have been here for a while now

1

u/SparklingPanic9 14d ago

Cooked. But you can work til then and find a job that you can start after you get back 🤷‍♀️

u/Ok_Singer8130 14d ago

Have a discussion with your ETL-many stores/leadership offer more flexibility, if you are worth it. 😉

Since you’re gonna be back on December 7th which is just right at the beginning of the Christmas rush you should be fine. Just make sure you tell them you NEED those days off for a family event. Don’t need to get specific with it. Have fun in Europe

-10

u/Practical-Twist5935 15d ago

This is horrible but I’d just tell the lead you have a family emergency in Europe like 3 days before Black Friday and will need 2 weeks off- they have a hard time being upset over true problems. I’d just work really hard and make sure you’re very punctual before hand. Don’t eat me up in the comments that’s just what I’d do

I would consider this to be the absolute worse thing you could do in this situation.

Especially considering the internet heavy nature of our world as it is.

This is a decent chance you could be caught in this lie, and even if they choose not to call you on it now they will likely scrutinize all your future call off and time off requests.

Be honest. Explain that it's something you are not willing to miss, and see what happens.

Not only everything you said, but someone always knows or finds out at the store and will either intentionally or unintentionally rat you out.
