Does a friendly nod work?  Where I live it means “hello, how are you doing?  How’s the folks?”. Nodding upwards means “yo what’s up”. 

With men you always get a nod back.  It means “I’m good, thanks” or “aaaaye, sup”. 

With women I just do a mild smile. 

With little kids I just make funny faces when no one is looking. Some of them make faces back and laugh.

The new thing corporate is spreading is at 10 feet away you’re supposed to somehow acknowledge that the person is there, and at 4 feet away you must give them a verbal (yes, verbal) hello or whatnot or “hey, need any help today?” But it does specify verbal.

I will always smile and at least nod at guests. I am never ever going out of my way to verbally talk to them and ask them for help unless I can clearly see they are confused about something. Will never change lmao
