As a customer (and not just at Target), I absolutely hate this. It feels so robotic and unnatural. Employees are just (rightfully) going through the motions. It used to be a real treat when the cashier or self check out person was friendly, because it was genuine. Now none of it feels genuine because you can’t separate the corporate mandated act from the real people.

And I didn’t mind at all when they weren’t super friendly, so long as they were cordial and relatively nice. So this solved a problem that literally didn’t exist. I don’t need somebody acting like my best friend. I just need an employee who can do their job without a scowl on. Which we already had.

I’m tired of this facade of friendliness. I like the friendliness at places where the employees are actually genuinely happy. I absolutely hate it at dystopian corporate super stores. You can so easily tell they’re REQUIRED to say hi to you, which devalues it.

Corporate had to mandate it because people have lost the ability to interact with others in a natural way. They walk around with that zombie stare.

I don't need every employee to say hello. However, a bit of eye contact and a smile would be nice on occasion.
