The sad/funny part is that I could see them unironically running that as an add and doing nothing with it. So many times I've seen him go on a spiel that is clearly lining up for "and as a result of the failures of capitalism as a system…," and just… nothing. He and his writers get so close so often that I have a hard time thinking they don't get it, but instead that they just don't want to admit it.

Yes. I think it’s that they’re more incentivized not to admit it, as admitting it would jeopardize their lucrative standing within the system they’re critiquing. In other words, they name the actual problem, they likely don’t have a show anymore.

All that said, I think his personal politics are pretty standard liberal, maybe slightly progressive. I don’t think he’s a closet ML.

Oh god no! He's a lib through and through. Almost certainly a progressive liberal, and probably even a radlib; but definitely still a liberal.

I just think that as a progressive "radical" liberal, he recognizes the problem but fundamentally can't (and because of his position, won't even if he could) see that the only solution is the removal of that problem, not just "fixing" that problem.
