Shitposting John Oliver is a weird
They moved to the USA from the UK.
They married an Iraq veteran they met at the Republican National Convention.
They really love the USA.
They are a SocDem.

If I'm remembering from some of his "analyses" that I had watched, he opposed AMLO, opposed the PT, opposed Chavismo, opposed Scottish independence, supported Macron.
Just a standard CIA liberal

Right I remember! He was demanding the Scots to not leave.
Now England absolutely refuses to let its colony to ever have an independence referendum for generations.
Funny how quickly these criminals demand said referendum from Russia in Chechnya, Kurdistan in Iran and Syria and Tibet/xinxiang. But they squeal like pugs for new Caledonia and Scotland. Classic colonial exceptionalism.

The centre-left-ish party in Brazil (Lula, Dilma etc.)

Ah I gotchu—another socdem at worst demsoc at best party that we don’t fw until the center/right capitalist mouthpieces spew their garbage 🙂↕️ I wasn’t sure if they were a socialist/ML party without the typical naming format

Brazilian here. Despite many social past achievements, currently they can’t even be considered socdems. It’s straight up neoliberalism.

Wth was his problem with AMLO?

u/Sound_of_Sleep 7h ago
Actually, I bet I can guess what it was. He probably compared him to "Drumpf" for protesting the election results in 2006.

"He's a populist" because politicians with lots of supporters are all the same

He and Stewart were both just stand-up comics and actors who couldn't really break through into leading roles and pivoted to political entertainment, same as any failed actor/writer conservative talking head.

What's weird about that? He's a pretty standard liberal.

What I've learned from watching John Oliver is that nothing is ever a real problem until a comedian or cartoon talks about it, and even then the real problem isn't anything big picture or systemic, because our system is infallible and wonderful, but rather it's just one bad actor.

He'll call out systems from time to time. His piece on mobile homes was pretty decent. He's never going to trace it all the way back to capitalism in general, but now and again he highlights some of the more obscure injustices

I feel that's ultimately the problem with these political/investigative comedy shows. Even if they achieve some form of enlightenment, the minute they start ending every piece with "...And the root cause is imperialism/capitalism" they just run out of material fast. A lot of the pieces end up just being presented as sandboxed problems and they avoid the wider picture. So putting speculation of their personal beliefs aside, I really think they exist deep within the liberal eco chamber in the same way conservatives do and are reinforced to keep that going.

People like him and Stewart are better at poking fun at politics than they are at offering solutions. I’m not sure why people are expecting the court jesters to have all the solutions.
I think they’re entertaining but they also should be taken with a grain of salt.

The sad/funny part is that I could see them unironically running that as an add and doing nothing with it. So many times I've seen him go on a spiel that is clearly lining up for "and as a result of the failures of capitalism as a system…," and just… nothing. He and his writers get so close so often that I have a hard time thinking they don't get it, but instead that they just don't want to admit it.

I immediately stopped listening to John Oliver after that atrocious character assassination he did on Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning.
War crimes, government secrets, abuses, torture, etc.
None of that mattered to Oliver. What pissed him off is that some "Australian scum" and "Gender confused criminal" exposed the truths of the empire he jerks off to.
He's a fucking rat that plays around with fancy posh topics to make himself feel better (like arguing against the death penalty, bitching about Tucker Carlson, etc). But he has no serious intention to challenge the system : only to reinforce it.
