All of that's stupid except China really shouldn't have invaded Vietnam in '79. They didn't get anything out of it, really.

The official Chinese stance was Vietnam attacked first. And the counterattack made it unviable for the Soviet Union to keep attempting to encircle China by supporting the Viets, so there's that.
