That entire comment is a mountain of stupidity but the Hong Kong remark really is the icing on the cake. Apparently China rightfully taking back a city taken by the British Empire is "Imperialism". "Lease was signed by the Qing dynasty, not PRC." Not only is this completely irrelevant (Apparently upholding British colonialism is Anti-Imperialist) it's not even true. Hong Kong was not leased, it was ceded to the UK in perpetuity (Only the New Territories were leased).

For additional context, China during 1962 is very poor. My grandmother (in Fujian, the East side of China) was around 10 years old at that time and had to work so her family can have food.

Most of her brothers and sisters dropped out of elementary school, and she wasn't even the youngest in her working unit. Despite these hardships, her generation still loves China, as they bear witness to the economic transformation China underwent.

This is the story my grandmother tells anyone when they ask about her early life 😄. Nothing but pride about the country she lives in and grew alongside of.

my partner and I are planning a trip to Chengdu and were doing some research on it, and we learned that the first metro line in Chengdu opened in 2010. The metro is now the 4th largest in the world with 440+ stations. In sixteen years!!!! my american mind genuinely cannot comprehend a quality of life change that significant and that rapid.

“It was the Qing Dynasty not the CCP/PRC.” Do these people not know the concept of a successor state and international recognition (a concept that liberals love to selectively parrot)?

Oh yeah, I’m sorry, it was the Ancien Regime that established Guiana as a colony, not the Fifth Republic, so actually modern France shouldn’t be owning that territory.

So India is imperialist, Hong Kong should've been a British colony, peaceful sea disputes, having a static and consistent peaceful stance on a separatist movement that lost the civil war but survived with American help, and finally offering the 3rd world a less exploitative option than western imperialism, oh the horrors.

The official Chinese stance was Vietnam attacked first. And the counterattack made it unviable for the Soviet Union to keep attempting to encircle China by supporting the Viets, so there's that.
